2013 Seven Hills Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 02-23-2017
Seven Hills has some delivered a wine that packs way more punch than it's $20 price tag. Expressive aromas of black berry fruit and oak spices hint at the power of this vintage. Black currant and fresh raspberry fruits, black tea, graphite follow, with a lovely acidity and healthy dose of tanin to wrap up the entire package. This 2013 Cabernet should easily last a decade!

2014 Maison L'Envoyé "The Attaché" Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
Review Date: 02-23-2017
This mid tier offering from Maison L'Envoye shows aromas of fresh cherry and raspberry, baking spices, and a slightly savory, smoked meat quality that was particularly intriguing. Again, fresh red fruits shined with perfectly integrated oak and a hint of tanin on the back end. This is a seductive Pinot Noir; very pretty fruits and a bright palate, yet layered and quite powerful!

2014 Obsidian Ridge "Obsidian Ridge Vineyard" Red Hills Lake County Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 02-23-2017
Once again, what is this Obsidian Ridge Cabernet bottle far surpasses the price point! The fruit for this wine comes from an incredible, obsidian glass laden vineyard and is aged in Hungarian Oak. Fresh blackberry and black currant fruit, with a hint of blueberry, jumps out of the glass, with layers of baking spices, minerality, beautifully integrated oak, and medium tanin lending plenty of complexity and intrigue. Lake County has long been supplying fruit to many favorite Napa wineries, so put aside the designation and try this wonderful cab for what is inside the glass and not on the label - you will not regret it!

2013 Fuenteseca Huerta Singular "El Maguey" Blanco Tequila (750ml)
Review Date: 02-05-2017
Hot damn, Enrique Fonseca has done it again! The brains behind the majority of our favorite tequilas over the past few years is pushing the boundaries of the agave spirit once more. The intrigue behind his products started with the ArteNom selections in 2011, and grew substantially with the first Fuenteseca release; a blend of up to 21 year old tequila's that I never thought would be topped. Well, today I had a sip of the new Fuenteseca Blanco Singular release, and now I have at least a tie between my two favorite tequila's ever, and from a Blanco no less (I will be revisiting the last few drops of that 21 YO blend tonight, for science)! Do yourself a favor and read the full write up David did for the blog and email, then don't hesitate to buy a bottle and enjoy this piece of history in the making. It is a pure expression of the best Agave Jalisco has to offer, and it is an expressive, structured, magical liquid.

2013 Chardenet "Durell Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Chardonnay
Review Date: 12-13-2016
Hailing from one of the most sought-after Sonoma Coast vineyards, this Chardenet Durell vineyard has notes of baked apple, pear, caramel, tropical fruit in that luscious California Chardonnay style. Coming in at a fraction of the price that other Durell vineyard wines are going for, this wine is an easy buy for any fan of the style!

2013 Chardenet "Coteau Blanc" Carneros Chardonnay
Review Date: 12-11-2016
Both of these Chardenet Chardonnays are classic California offerings. The Coteau Blanc, a Carneros region vineyard plated on a partial Limestone deposit, has a very expressive nose of white flowers and apple. The palate is well balanced, with golden delicious apple, citrus, and tropical notes with a clean, oak integrated finish.

2014 Ancient Peaks/K&L Wine Merchants Paso Robles Zinfandel
Review Date: 11-15-2016
We have been anxiously awaiting the return of the Ancient Peak's / K&L zinfandel, and this second iteration absolutely lives up the hype! It is on the refreshingly lighter, prettier side of zin, with fresh picked plum and blackberry, lively acidity, and light tannin on the finish. Beautifully balanced and easy drinking, this wine should easily find it's way to the front of your mid week and weekend selections.

2014 Calera Central Coast Pinot Noir
Review Date: 09-21-2016
This Calera Central Coast Pinot Noir is consistently one of the, if not the, best "entry level" Pinots in the game! Sourced from incredible vineyards across the coast (Bien Naciedo, Laetitia, Solomon Hills among others), this Pinot shows fresh picked cranberry and Bing cherry, pretty herbal notes, and mild toast on the finish. Both of the central coast offerings in 2014 are incredibly strong and not to be missed!

2014 K Vintners "Milbrandt" Wahluke Slope Syrah
Review Date: 09-02-2016
A few years ago I was fortunate enough to make a winery trip Washington wine country, culminating in a visit with Charles Smith of K Vintners/ Charles Smith/ Casa Smith/ etc. We struggled to keep up as he flew around the old vehicle-repair- shop-turned-tasting-room, swinging open "walls" revealing office areas, running to the back to crank Soundgarden over the speakers (drawing a few eye rolls from the desk workers), then opening seemingly every bottle in sight! As we drank through magnums of 2002 and 2006 Syrahs, which were incredible, I quickly realized that his wines truly are an extension of the man making them: bold, and full of life, in your face, but in tune with the land and incredibly well made. This Milbrandt is an "entry level" Syrah for K Vintners, but you wouldn't guess it! This wine is incredibly complex, showing layers of pure fruit, an array of spices, savory notes, and barrel integration. If this sounds intriguing, stock up as they won't last long.

2014 Maldonado "Farm Worker" Napa Valley Chardonnay
Review Date: 08-31-2016
This is the "quintessential California" profile that so many Chardonnay drinkers prefer, but at under $18 and in a truly well-made style! It has the "buttery" profile, but with nice acidity to keep it from crossing into the "too heavy" territory; oak integration that doesn't overwhelm, and the classic tropical fruit notes that shine, all working in a well-balanced harmony. A true crowd-pleaser for your next cocktail hour event!

2014 Akitu "A2" Pinot Noir Central Otago (White Label)
Review Date: 08-31-2016
There is a multitude of specs below and above, so I'll give the short and sweet breakdown: There isn't a better at $25 in the store that will impress every person that takes a sip. This wine fires on all cylinders; the fruit, acidity, barrel character, and spices all shine as one. Simple delicious Pinot Noir.

2013 Mercedes Eguren Cabernet Sauvignon Vino de la Tierra de Castilla
Review Date: 08-31-2016
Are you a cab fan? Do you enjoy structured, well balanced, older vine, single vineyard (it's a big vineyard, but it still counts) cabernet? While all that may sound like it will put a dent in your wallet, this wine will only cost you $10 and it is precisely all of the above. Dark red fruits, balance and great oak integration leads to a stunning wine for the money!

2013 Amici Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 06-08-2016
Amici Napa Cabernet has been a favorite for quite some time now. The 2013 vintage was superb for cabs in the area and it really shows in the bottling. Blackberry, blueberry, cassis, a touch of vanilla and oak spice. Drinking well now and will reward another 10 years in the cellar.

2014 Wines Of Substance Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 05-19-2016
Looking back at my notes from the 2013 WOS Cabernet and this new 2014 vintage, the same sentence stood out: "How the hell is this (still) $15?!" Washington has long passed Napa and Sonoma for having the most consistent bang-for-your-buck Cab/Syrah/Merlot wines in the $10-$30 price range, but this offering is just ridiculous. A big and powerful wine overall, this 2014 WOS shows plenty of dark berry and currant fruit, with a smattering spice and toasty French Oak. This is a perfect companion to any backyard BBQ in the months ahead!
