1996 Baron Fuente "Grand Millésimé" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 11-13-2010
Clear, Star Bright, beautiful light gold in color...big extremely pleasant nose of biscuits, breadfruit, and a touch of butter; the best way to describe this aroma is "aged champagne"...

The palate is extremely complex, slightly liquory; some citrus, cocoa, minerals, caramel...tiny fine bubbles, but somewhat sparse, acidity is slightly high...

The finish is sharp and shares the palate's complexity; dusy, chalky minerals supported bypeaches, lemon, a sort of apple candy tang, and a bit of cocoa...

2007 Trimbach Riesling
Review Date: 11-10-2010
Clear, day bright, extremely pale yellow...nose is fairly complex but still subtle (like a high quality perfume); some white fruit (I cant decide if it's peach or pear, or both?) perhaps a bit of apple, a pleasant and aromatic green quality (Christmas tree?), stones, and a delicate floral note...

The palate is dry and as complex as the nose; tangy citrus notes, some pear, some peach, chalky/stony monerals, something green and bitter that I want to call arugula...actidity is high, but more refreshing and crisp than cloying...

The finish is crisp; notes of pineapple, flowers, lemon zest, a delicate smoky "incensey" note, and a chalky minerality that reminds me of champagne...

I cant say enough good things about this wine, not only is acessible and approachable, but it also seems to be very well made...

2003 Bodegas Poesia "Poesia" Lujan de Cuyo
Review Date: 11-05-2010
Beautiful, dark, nearly opaque ruby core with a much brighter rim variation...

Minerally nose with a sort of anise seed note, I also get plenty of oak and a sort of "chemical" component...

The palate is big and juicy, black currant, blackberry, and perhaps a bit of black cherry ( I guess that's what they mean when they say "black fruit")...tannins are pretty big, but fairly well rounded (perhaps the result of some extra age int he bottle???) Just a slightly bitter, almost "charcoal"quality under the surface, and the slightest bit of cigar box/humidor...

The finish has a fruity sweetness mixed with an almost tamarind tangyness and a pleasant cocoa bitterness...I also detect a faint cinammon quality...

2002 Bert Simon Serriger Würtzberg Riesling Auslese
Review Date: 11-05-2010
Clear, day bright, pale lemon yellow...citrusy note with what I detect to be a bit of botrytis and a slightly unpleasant sulphur note...

The palate reminds me of being a kid in a candy store; sweet, clean, fruity, and tangy...the botrytis from the nose is confirmed as a honey sweetness...there is also a tangy, candy like flavor that reminds me of a bag of Jolly Ranchers, I also get a sort of key lime note...this is all supported by a floral note, some watermelon, and a bit of minerality...

The finish is long and complex; a bit floral, stony, slightly steely...with a lemondrop/candied lemonpeel flavor and a crisp pomarrosa note...

2004 Louis Roederer Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Review Date: 11-05-2010
Brilliant straw in color with just the slightest tinge of green...lees very detectable on the nose along with a certain nutty quality, a hint of citrus oil, and a dusty minerality...

Flavors of apple and nuts are the most detectable...Many other subtle notes including, peach, pear, and stone...the texture is silky and acidity is nearly perfect...bubbles seem slightly larger in this cremant style, but still very pleasant...

The finish is creamy with a fair amount of apple tartness, and a bit of minerality...

2007 Domaine Cheveau Saint Amour "En Rontey"
Review Date: 11-04-2010
Clear, bright, black cherry colored core with ruby red edge variation...nose has a ton of cherry, I also get a note of something warm and synthetic that reminds me of the inside of a woman's makeup bag (as silly as that sounds), I believe I also detect maceration carbonique...

Palate is extremely smooth and silky...cherry from the nose is confirmed in a major way. I also get raspberry, and perhaps some blueberry aswell...extremely soft tannins are present, but just barely...

The finish is fruity, with a floral note, and a certain stemmy green quality that reminds me of rose leaves, I also get a very nice high note of pommerosa...

This is an excellent "easy drinking" wine that was fantastic by its self, but I would imagine would pair well with a wide range of foods...

2004 Tenuta Castelveder Franciacorta Brut
Review Date: 11-04-2010
Clear, day bright, darker than lemon yellow, but lighter than straw (I'd have to consult a box of crayolas to pinpoint what color this wine is exactly)...The nose is the best part...lovely citrus (lemon and orange) with some toasty notes along with a wet stone minerality...

The palate is extremely dry and mineraly...some grapefruit and sour apple notes, a very present bitter chinotto note, a bit of persimmon, and something slightly minty...but unfortunately the acidity of this wine steals center stage and really detracts from the whole experience...bubbles are plentiful, but on the large side and do little to mask the wince inducing acidity...

The finish is minerally with notes of blood orange/chinotto, a hint of toasty macaroon, and a strange metallic note that once again detracts from the whole experience...

This wine is barely on this side of "drinkable" as it is...but it does have a certain complexity that might contribute nicely to a "champagne" cocktail or another sweet sparkling wine concoction where a sugary additive might cut the acidity and let the pleasant citrus flavors of this wine show a bit more...

2007 Matetic EQ Chardonnay San Antonio Valley
Review Date: 10-31-2010
Clear, day bright, straw in color...Fruit immediately stands out on the nose; pear and apricot, along with some butteryness, and a certain clean "green" quality (something like trees after a rain)...

The palate is smooth, with a good amount of citrus (grapefruit, and lemon) with a bit of peach, a touch of honey, and a slight oakyness...

That faint "green" quality from the nose is back on the finish (just as faint) along with a stoney minerality, and a crisp flavor of pear and perhaps just a bit of apple...while the finish isnt extremely long, it's not short, and is altogether, quite pleasant...

2008 Antech "Emotion" Cremant de Limoux Rosé
Review Date: 10-27-2010
Clear, day bright, salmon in color...Nose of strawberry, lees, slight toastyness, and a stemmy green note that I cannot identify with 100% certainty...

A bit of strawberry confirms the nose on the palate, but the biggest flavor is cherry, also some lemongrass, and a hint of what I want to call eucalyputs...small sparce bubbles show slightly too much acidity, but not enough to make this wine altogether unpleasant...

finish is fairly straightforward...cherry/berry flavor and a pleasant minerality...

to be fair, I will admit that I was comming off a bit of a cold when I tasted this wine, so my tastebuds may have been a bit off, but I still did enjoy this wine, and will definitely consider it in the future when I'm looking for an inexpensive sparkling wine...pound for pound, this wine is a great value...

2007 Georges Duboeuf Julienas "Château des Capitans"
Review Date: 10-25-2010
Pretty red in color...as silly as it sounds, it's as burgundy as a Washington Redskins jersey...

Smokey Nose with a bit of spice (I pick up black pepper, but I'm not at all confident that it isnt something else) and a sort of generic "fruit" note...

Clean flavors of raspbery and something slightly tangy (plum???) mix with what I can only describe as grilled portobello...tannins are barely present at first, but seem to "show up" a bit later on...

Somewhat of a minerally finish with an almost metallic "bite" and traces of dried fruit and a note that I can only describe as "briney"...this wine very much reminds me of those Hawaiian candies with the sweet candy shell and the salted plum in the middle both in taste and because both are really good in small doses, but can become a bit cloying with the more you have at one sitting...

2000 Perrier Jouët "Fleur de Champagne Belle Epoque" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 10-25-2010
Lovely pale gold color...the nose is extremely complex; honeysuckle, some melon, a bit of toast, and just a whisper of anise...

Big fruit flavors on the palate; melon, green apple, citrus...some honey...all held together by a very pleasant creamyness...bubbles are small, but not quite as "present" as I would expect from a tete de cuvee , it actually almost reminds me of a cremant...but still extremely pleasant due to a nearly perfect acidity...

The finish is long, and extremely pleasant...it's creamy with a definite green apple crispness, a certain floral quality, and a bit of peach...

Dark ruby red...slightly less than clear...a TON of cherries on the nose with just a trace of oak...

Berries on the palate, along with a sort of vegetal woodyness that is hard to place...tannins are soft and well rounded...

The finish is slightly bitter and not extremely long, with flavors of olives and under ripe berries...

Dark violet in color...heady, slightly astringent nose with a definite cherry note...

the palate is big with a surprizing level of complexity...anise, cherry, plum, and a bit of blackberry...a bit of leather underneath...showing some tannins, but by no means big...I also get a bit of an olive pit quality...

bitter cocoa and mint on the finish...

1997 Destieux, St-Emilion
Review Date: 10-20-2010
Threw some sediment...clear ruby red...

The nose displays earthyness and a subtle cigar box character...

The palate starts out a bit sweet; red currant, with a herbal note...I also get a bit of leather, cedar, citrus, and graphite...tannins are well integrated, but still present...

the finish is herbal, earthy, and dry...overall an excellent value for the price...

Jean-Louis Denois Brut "Tradition"
Review Date: 10-20-2010
Clear, straw color...

The Nose is crisp with notes of minerals, yeast, and just a bit of sour apple...

The palate confirms the minerality of the nose...a bit of fruit, perhaps lime mixes with the same apple notes from the nose...there is also a slight "perfumey" note that I cannot identify and just the faintest bit of orange oil...the bubbles are small and tight, but this wine's acidity seems to show through the effervesence...

the finish is dry and full of green apple essence...

1983 d'Issan, Margaux
Review Date: 10-10-2010
The color is difficult to describe; ruby red tinged with a tawny hue that can only indicate a wine with some age on it...

The nose is as complex as it is pleasant...earth, graphite, dried fruit, and a whisper of oak...

The palate is surprizingly "big" and as smooth as one would expect from a wine with nearly three decades of age on it...cedar, cherry, pencil, black currant, flowers, herbs and a strange hint of something that reminds me of camphor (but I could be wrong on that last one)...I wish i had more training because I feel that there are even more notes that I could pick out if my palate were a bit more sophisticated...

The finish is long and pleasant, cherry, cedar, earth and perhaps a bit of tobacco and herbs are the notes that seem to stand out the most...

2007 Domaine des Nugues Beaujolais Villages
Review Date: 10-10-2010
Clear, deep violet in color...

Fairly fruity on the nose, although there is a distracting "foreign" note that I can not pin down (perhaps this is the "pear drop" scent that is supposed to result from carbonic maceration?)...

On the palate, plavors of sour cherry, and some blackberry, nothing extremely focused...There is also a definite strawberry note...

The finish is somewhat dull...some berry, a hint of something sort of bubblegum/candy like, but very faint...not an unpleasant wine by any means, but nothing jumps out as really memorable about it either...

1997 Langoa-Barton, St-Julien
Review Date: 10-03-2010
Threw a bit of sediment, but less than I was expecting for a wine with over 10 years of age on it...ruby red core, with just the slightest hint of brick around the edges...

I get leather, paper and an almost gingerbread component on the complex nose...backed by an almost sweet pepper scent and a bit of black currant and chocolate...

The palate is soft and clean with juicy flavors of cherry being the most pronounced...I also get a bit of plum and more black currant...tannins are well integrated...

Dry finish with just a bit of cedar, mineral notes and a complex slightly sweet herbal note...

2008 Ermacora Pinot Bianco
Review Date: 09-29-2010
Extremely pale lemon yellow color...Nothing immediately stands out on the nose...which I finally took to be floral mixed with a bit of fruit (I seem to get apple and an almost "melon-y" note)...

The palate is crisp with an almost apple "jolly rancher" note that stands out immediately...very present...an almost lemon meringue flavor is also easily detectable, as is a slightly vegetal frshness and a "minerallyness" not unlike Pellegrino drinking water...

The finish is slightly creamy along with something that reminds me of limoncello, a certain "gravellyness", and just a hint of something green and mild (lettuce comes to mind, but I dont think that's it)...

2004 Louis Roederer Brut Rosé Champagne
Review Date: 09-29-2010
Gorgeous rose gold in color...Strong berry notes on the nose with hints of toast and chalk being very evident, and a flowery perfume that screams of freshness...

dry, with flavors of cranberry sauce, pommegranite, and sweet citrus...as well as a less pronounced (although still very present) note of crisp golden apple...mousse as delicate as lace with miniscule bubbles that seem to be a trademark of all Louis Roederer offerings...

Strawberry and apple freshness supported by something that reminds me of the inside of a florist's refrigerator (floral, green, sweet all mixed together to form one harmonious note) and just a slight citrus essence on the long pleasant finish...

2000 La Massa "Giorgio Primo" Chianti Classico
Review Date: 09-29-2010
Threw a fair amount of sediment when decanted...intense deep red, nearly purple core with just a bit of brick around the edges...

Floral notes on the nose with a mixture of oak and just a bit of spice...

Smooth as silk with flavors of dried fruit immediately detectable to the palate...cherry is detectable as is a bit of spice...tannins seem to be well integrated...a slight mineral (almost graphite) note is detectable just under the surface, as is a bit of cocoa and a barely present herbal note that I cannot quite put my finger on...

The finish is fruity with just a hint of smoke, a bit of rose petals, and a cartain unidentifiable freshness that is quite pleasant...

2007 Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay
Review Date: 09-25-2010
not quite golden in color...but a bit more than "straw"...

On the nose, I immediately detect a floral sweetness and something that almost reminds me of buttercream icing...extremely complex, and I will admit that I cannot pinpoint everything that is going on here...but I do also get a slight mineraly quality...something like hot stones...

The palate is clean, crisp, and extremely well rounded...Pineapple is immediately detectable, as is green apple (but in no way overly acidic) with just a hint of oak...there is also the same slightly stony quality from the nose...I also get a slight hint of gingerbread...

The finish lingers with a mixture of minerals, vanilla, and just a bit of cinnamon...

Dark purple in color...strange woody notes on the nose, I also detect a bit of chocolate...

Soft and smooth flavors of coffee and cherry/berries stand out immediately on the palate with a bit of herbal spicyness (something like arugula)...very smooth tannins...

There is a frutiness on the finish, butit definitely plays second fiddle to something that reminds me of a shot of expresso mixed with vanilla syrup...

2007 Emmerich Knoll "Loibenberg" Grüner Veltliner Smaragd
Review Date: 09-16-2010
Very fruity wine...I cant pick up any real specific notes on the nose except a very "clean" aroma mixed with somehting similar to butterscotch (buti could be wrong)...

Huge flavors of mango, peach, and lime...all very distinct...with just a bit of pepper to balance the sweetness...

The finish is dominated by mango and apricot flavors mixed with cream, and surrounding a pleasant mineral essence...

2002 Louis Roederer "Cristal" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 09-15-2010
Pale gold in color with millions of tiny almost microscopic bubbles...Crisp notes of apple intermingle with a honey like sweetness on the nose, I also detect a topnote of buttery toast, and a bit of chalk...

millions of miniscule bubbles massage the pallate with a dry basenote that supports a slight lemon zest flavor and hints of something that I would describe as bubble gum or perhaps cotton candy (a flavor that takes you back to your childhood for a moment)...I also detect a bit of fresh peach...

the finish is dry and lingers without ever becoming cloying, a persistent, clean mix of sweet peach and tangy lemon with just a bit of tart apple...This particular vintage seems to be noticably different from the last few that I've tried (which were all excellent aswel)...It has a certain "candy" quality that I have never noticed in previous vintages, I'd imagine this will only get more spectacular with age...

2003 Verdignan Rouge, Haut-Médoc
Review Date: 09-15-2010
Deep garnet in color...somewhat heady nose (although I will admit I only decanted this bottle a bout 15 minutes before I tasted it) with hints of almost candy like berry and a hint of what I want to say is clove...

Very silky but also slightly "flat"...pleasant, juicy flavors of strawberry on the palate, a bit of spice, and a sort of woody quality with a pleasant level of tartness...tannins are very present, but not quite as "big" as I was expecting...

Some spice with an almost creamy quality on the finish (which is shorter than I was expecting) but with a bit of bitterness that distracts somewhat from the overall experience...

Louis Roederer "Carte Blanche" Extra Dry Champagne
Review Date: 09-15-2010
Very floral nose with hints of fresh baked bread with butter and an unidentifiable sweetness (like somehting mixed with noney)...

Flavors of toasted nuts marry harmoniously with a certain creamy, almost vanilla like quality that seems to rest on a bed of marzipan sweetness...

Tiny bubbles tickling my palate and give way to a crisp clean finish of peaches and cream with a bit of toastyness/bitterness reminiscent of almosds roasted very dark...I also get a bet of grapefruit...

One of the best non-vintage Champagnes I've ever tried...

2008 St-Jean-des-Graves Blanc, Graves
Review Date: 09-15-2010
Pale yellow in color with just the slightest greenish tint...Somewhat "green" on the nose (something like wet grass) also a bit of apple and perhaps peach??? No detectable oak...slightly earthy, minerally palate with hints of citrus (grapefruit, or perhaps avery high quality lemon) and I believe that I detect some mild apple notes aswel, just a bit of acidity...the finish is short and a bit perplexing...I want to initially say that I get a bit of vanilla/cream, but only for a very brief moment before it fades away and I get a sort of fruity pear/apple taste that I can't quite identify and for just a second, I could have sworn that I detected just a hint of fresh coconut...

2009 Kung Fu Girl Columbia Valley Riesling
Review Date: 09-15-2010
Very fruity nose, apple mostly, perhaps a slight floral note, with a hint of some sort of "chemically-ness" (albeit a pleasant one) that seems so familiar, but I just can not think of what it is...

Light body with just a slight effervesence, flavors of tropical fruits (mango and lime were two that I seemed to pick up on right away) are supported by a present (but not overpowering) citrus acidity, and something reminiscent of sparkling wine (perhaps a bit of lees???)...

The finish is multidimensional, and sweet; Once again, I get an apple quality supported by flowers and that same "lees-y" quality...

1999 De Meric "Vintage Sous Bois" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 09-15-2010
This wine reminds me of a slightly less "together" version of any of Louis Roederer's Carte Blanche offerings...

Old gold color indicates that this champagne either has a bit of oak or a bit of age (I'm guessing it might be a little of both here)...Smooth creamy nose with hints of fresh baked bread...

Buttery Rich palate with a slight almost indescribable fruitness, a hint of something that reminds me of amaretto, just a whisper of vanilla, and the slightest kiss of honey...This wine is full of subtle notes...bubbles look very fine and tight, but dont feel quite as "small" on the palate as I thought they might...

Slightly liquory finish with an etherial flavor of chery candy...creamy, with just a slight trace of bitterness...very good wine, especially considering the price...
