a novice wine lover, I might be starting to make the move from Napa Cabs to earthier, more complex reds -- pinot noir, sangiovese, rhone blends

2005 Bodegas Castano "Hecula" Yecla
Review Date: 05-22-2010
Dark dark inky purple with a lovely bouquet. Very spicy, a hint of beef jerky, a little cassis. Significant tannins, heavy smoke and bitter chocolate. Not overly fruity. medium (medium short) finish. Overwhelmed grilled chicken on the first day, but it was a good match with a hearty pasta dish. Did not do so well sitting out in the glass. Overall: Savory, dense, and spicy, not that complex, but high QPR for heartier fare.

2007 Cave de Saumur Selection Rouge

This wine needs a serious decanting. Even after pouring through the Vinturi, it still needed a little more time for the nose to really come out. However, given sufficient time, the lavender, cherry, and vanilla aromas really come out in a really intoxicating way. I just sat there all night sipping and sniffing. The wine is light red, medium bodied, with great balance. I loved it. Super Duper QPR!

2007 Perrin & Fils "Reserve" Côtes du Rhône
Review Date: 12-17-2009
FYI, this wine has no cork at all -- just a screw top. Right after pouring, it's all sour tang. After a few minutes, it mellows and seems to be all blackberry and fruity. Goes well with food. Later on, the fruitiness fades and there's a bit of earth and a touch of barnyard to keep it interesting but not funky. For the price, this is worth a try to see if it resonates with you. I'm looking for something a little more (at a higher price)
