2007 Diochon Moulin-á-Vent Vieilles Vignes
Review Date: 01-01-2010
Sweet violets and cherries up front. Some tart or sour flavours arrive in the middle - raspberry and cranberry. Perhaps a bit of strawberry in there as well. Has some earthy, forresty components. Unique and interesting, but not mind-blowing.

Black berries with a smokey edge. Not too complex, but well balanced. Fine for drinking now, but could use some time in the glass.

Dark berries and cherries in the front, and bit of mocha and earth arrives in the middle. Some slight woody spice and anise notes linger on the finish underneath the solid fruit core. A very satisfying wine.

2004 Adega Cartuxa "Évora" Alentejo
Review Date: 01-01-2010
Sour, woody and earthy. Tar and rose flavours like a borolo, but with some cherry cola. Tastes a bit like kirsch and barbecue to me. I was disappointed with this wine, but that's not to say that I think it is a poor quality effort. This wine is just not at all made in a style I enjoy. If you are looking for a red to mate with a southern dish of blackened catfish, potatoes, and collared greens, then this may be a good choice for you. Probably also good with ribs.

2005 Jean-Louis Denois Chardonnay "Sainte Marie" Vin de Pays d'Oc
Review Date: 01-01-2010
Has a floral and citrus bouquet with subtle, sweet, creamy oak nuances. This is very fine, rich, and balanced. A fantastic wine worth twice the price. I will buy this again. This is a good example of the style and superior quality of white wines produced in southern France.

2006 Potensac, Médoc

Sweet roses and red berries are in front. It is a bit yeasty and has slight cola and leather notes. Needs time to soften. I'd love to try it again in a couple of years.

2005 Swanson Napa Valley Merlot
Review Date: 01-01-2010
Lots of marionberry and cherry with anise and cola. Has pepper and spice with floral notes blending in nicely on the nose. A bit of forest creeps in over time. First appears sweet, but finishes dry with rather sturdy tannins. This really changes in the glass. Homely marionberry pie develops into bold and dry California merlot.

2006 Girard Napa Petite Sirah
Review Date: 01-01-2010
Sweet blueberry jam in front with clove and peppery spice. Earthy, with wood and gravel notes in the middle. Some lavender, and a hint of pastis in there as well with bits of bittersweet chocolate and coffee. Some alcohol warmth kicks in, but it is not overpowering, It is a little gritty at first, but really tones down with time. Very rich, complex, dark, and exquisite. The wine gained vanilla, nutmeg, cedar notes after an hour.

Pear up front with lime, stones and lemon. There are light notes of nectar, honey, orange peel and apricot. A bit buttery and toasty, and then comes a nutty, sweet, crisp, long and refreshing finish. I caught a slight coconut note in middle. There is perhaps a bit of clove in there as well.

Raspberry in front with some licorice. It's grapey and stoney in the middle. The lightly toasty oak glides in, and is a bit smokey and woody on the finish. A spicy and full wine.

Shows exotic fruits like mango, guava, and pineapple. Also some wet stones and minerals. Has some strong, ripe apple or pear notes, a bit of lime, and a touch of lemongrass. The wine is very crisp and refreshing, which makes it good with food.

2004 Marques de Vargas Reserva Rioja
Review Date: 09-05-2009
Peppery blackberry in front. Wet earth, wood, spices, bay leaf and tea (Oolong?) show up. Vanilla notes influenced by some light oak is present. Some smoke and a bit of rose are in the middle as well. Tart cherry on finish, with perhaps some olive. Tannins and acids are interwoven well, balancing the wine out, making this smooth but structured.

Blackberry and blueberry open it up, with anise, wet stones, a bit of smoke, some earth, and tobacco leaf joining the complex mix of flavours in this wine. It is slightly jammy, then adds touches of cherry, cranberry, strawberry, vanilla and spice over time. Very complex with air.

2007 St. Supéry Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc
Review Date: 04-18-2009
Shows apple, pear, pineapple, and lime in front. It is lightly floral, with a bit of melon and honey. Some guava and lemongrass is added to the mix. To me, this is a great example of a Napa Sauvignon Blanc, which I prefer over New Zealand's typical style. However, it does have a bit of the crisp tropical notes of a NZ wine coming through, making it a well rounded and accessible wine to a variety of tastes. This wine was very close to receiving 4 points. A great bargain!

2005 Rosenblum "Annette's Reserve" Redwood Valley Zinfandel
Review Date: 03-22-2009
Loads of dark berry jam and some bits of anise and cola both on the nose and palate. Very good oak integration with sweet vanilla lingering. Quite spicy too. A fruity red that is great with food. Paired extremely well with mushroom burger and rosemary potatoes. Should be very nice, gaining another half of a point in a couple of years.

Raspberry, blackberry, and licorice up front. This is grapey, jammy, peppery, but with well-rounded vanilla, oak and spice in the mid-palate that brings nice harmony. There is a bit of cocoa and cola on the finish as well.

2004 Rodney Strong "Estate" Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 02-16-2009
Black cherry, blackberry and licorice are up front with smoke, graphite, and a touch of cocoa and mushroom gliding in through the finish. Another half point is added to my score as it gets an hour (or two) in the glass, which really allows it to soften and reveal more complexity. Great, balanced, young Cabernet that shows the awesome quality and value that comes out of this AVA.

2005 Kaesler "Avignon" GSM Barossa Valley South Australia

2006 Chateau St. Jean Chardonnay "Robert Young Vineyard" Alexander Valley
Review Date: 02-10-2009
Meaty and toasty, some pear in front with subtle floral notes on finish. I did not find this particularly enjoyable. The peach and tangerine as read about in the Spectator and Parker reviews were hidden to me by the stony, caustic, minerality, which could have been tamed a bit my some malo conversion (in my opinion). Probably a decent match to a pork loin as the saltiness of the dish may compliment the profile of this wine.

2006 Migration Anderson Valley Pinot Noir
