This differs from the benchmark Laphroig official-bottling 18-yr, and I find it even better (hard to imagine.) Very gentle, non-medicinal peat nose with dried fruit, malt, complex spice, and wisps of tropical fruit. Such balance! The taste is a seamless transition with everything from the aroma, adding a gentle non-sherry oak and vanilla with a light sweetness. Mouth-filling! The endless finish goes through stages of evolution, settling out with a light brine and reminders of the peat. Hard to imagine that the 10-yr Laphroig which slaps you around the room morphs into this. A very special dram!

This is a complex, enormous gem which steps outside the Glenlivet box. Deep (natural) color, with an explosive sherry aroma. Beautifully understated on sweetness, and very light on the classic hazelnut flavor from this distillery. Multiple nut and toffee flavors, with a light vanilla and wood note competing with the sherry background. No island smoke or peat elements here. There are several Speyside and Highland brands with this style in mind, and a few achieve it; but none at this price. I bought this one stepping out on a limb; but I am overwhelmed with the overall excellence. Bravo.
