2005 Gerard Boulay Sancerre Chavignol

SKU #1025783

Please meet our favorite Sancerre producer who is soon to be yours as well. A friend turned us on to the Boulay family in Chavignol, long hallowed ground for Sauvignon Blanc, and after a staggering tasting of more than 8 vintages I was in love. Never had I tasted such vivid clarity and expressiveness in Sancerre much less Sauvignon Blanc, the wines transcend what you think of the grape, they are much more than simple quaffers with aromas of candied grapefruit, mandarin orange, lime and wildflowers but what really sets them apart is their mineral infused personality, these are wines of the soil, that echo the land with precision and delineation found in only the greatest of white wines. 91 points Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar "Green-tinged straw. Initially wound-up nose opens to display a range of bright citrus, mineral and succulent herb aromas. Deep, racy lemon, lime, pear, quinine and anise flavors are nicely firmed by harmonious acidity. Firms up on the finish, which is impressively mineral-driven and long. This will reward three to five years of cellaring, at least."

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Sauvignon Blanc

- Sauvignon Blanc 34 As the backbone of the delicious Loire Valley wines like Sancerre and Pouilly Fume, Sauvignon Blanc remains a very popular varietal, but is has not seen expansive new plantings in California like Chardonnay. The reality is that in most California viticultural areas, planting Merlot or Cabernet will return more money to the grower. However, there are still some excellent Sauvignon Blanc plots in the golden state, and we're happy that the great Sauvignon Blanc vineyards in California continue to produce this fantastic varietal. Sauvignon Blanc is also extremely popular in Bordeaux, where it is used alone or with Semillon to produce the fine dry and sweet wines in Graves and Sauternes. Here is a list of our bestselling Sauvignon Blanc.

They range from still to sparkling, very dry and acidic to hearty sweet, and clear in color to a deep purple. The diversity of wine produced in this region is due in part to its dynamic climate, which ranges from Continental to Mediterranean.
