John Platter, who is THE South African wine guru has picked this as wine of the year from South Africa. Aromas of mulberries, spicy black berries and toasty oak pave the way for rich, complex layers of very ripe and rich fruit with berry flavors, violets and currants on the palate and full, lingering fruit-driven flavors on the aftertaste. Geographically and stylistically midway between the new and the old world wine regions, this complex wine is produced by dropping half the crop, to make a dense and powerful wine. Aged 12 months in French oak from Allier and U.S. Minnesota oak. Big, juicy Syrah, with dark plum, blackberry and cocoa flavors. Plenty of structure too, with a smoky, muscular finish. Hint of mineral. Drink now through 2007. 7,500 cases made. –JM Score: 90 Release Price: $22 Country: South Africa Region: Coastal Region Issue: Apr 30, 2006
