While they are a negociant, the 1996 is made up mostly of their quite extensive 225 acre estate. Paul Vincent Ariston says that his 25 year-old vines reflect the vintage, but the Prestige, made from vines averaging 60 years, reflect his terroir. This is an important distinction since many negociants buy "sur lattes" - meaning in bottle! This gem of a blanc de blanc is in fact a single vineyard wine, from the "les brousses" parcel in the premier cru village of Pierry, immediately to the south of Epernay. The vineyard is a massal selection (not made from cloned vines) that was planted in 1964. It is composed of the 2005 and 2004 vintages and given full barrel fermentation in old oak. Champagne Philippe Gonet is a 43 acre estate with vineyards from Mesnil (where their house and facility is located), up to Chigny Les Roses, out to the west of the Valley of the Marne and down to the Aube. Managed by Chantal, Denise and Pierre Gonet, the family has been making estate bottled Champagne since the 1800's, and they have the old bottles to prove it!
