French Wine
When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

There are many great bottles of Chardonnay and this is no exception, yet not many leave you with such satisfaction while not draining your wallet. It does not pretend to challenge the established icons of the wine world; it is merely delicious, friendly and under 7 bucks, a perfect bottle for Tuesday night, something to reach for to quench your thirst and that of your friends. The wine is produced by the three brothers Couillaud at the Château de la Ragotière a few minutes from the Atlantic near the mouth of the Loire River where the Maritime climate is... Read More »

In a terrific vintage like 2005, this drinks WAY above its price-point. As Allen Meadows writes about Girardin in this vintage: "the last few vintages really do seem to corroborate what he's saying about wanting to make more classically styled wines. And to this end Vincent told me that he "used up to 60% of the stems in his wine from the Côte de Nuits and up to 30% in those from the Côte de Beaune. 2005 is an aristocratic vintage that isn't at all fruity or forward and thus I did long but soft vinifications with no punch downs, only pump-overs. And I'm... Read More »

92-96 points Wine Spectator: "Dried apple, pear and honey on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, medium sweet, with a citrus fruit, apricot and spice character. Long and flavorful." (Web only, 2008) 92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A very lifted nose with great definition: notes of honey, white peach, mango and dried apricots. The palate is very intense with superb acidity and vibrancy, good levels of botrytis with a clean, fresh, vibrant honeyed finish. Very good weight and persistency - this is a superb 2007 and a great success for Myrat. Dr... Read More »

90 points Robert Parker. "The amazing 2007 Cotes du Rhone St.-Esprit (75% Syrah and 25% Grenache) reveals a northern Rhone orientation, but it is loaded with spice and black fruits, and displays a beautiful opulent texture as well as a gorgeous finish with impressive purity. Chateauneuf du Pape has also benefitted from the new attention to detail and upgraded quality. The good news is that there are about 1,500 cases of this cuvee. This delicious wine comes from a combination of vineyard sites both in Verdigny in Sancerre and some parcels just outside the appellation to the west. The Fournier family, with roots as deep as their vines in this region seem to be related to just about everyone in some way and have for generations been farming and producing wines in Sancerre. We are pleased to have been offered this wine, yet again, at such a great price. Soft, subtle mineral notes are wrapped up in aromatics of melon and citrus. Clean, bright and refreshing - This is a perfect little... Read More »

According to Robert Parker: "Another well-made offering from the southern Medoc (in the area of Macau), this dark ruby/purple-tinged, medium-bodied 2004 is an equal blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Excellent aromas of dried herbs, sweet cherries, currants, and cranberries, and loamy soil marry nicely with the wine's excellent texture and overall symmetry. Consume it over the next 4-5 years." Club Price: $10.99A pale yellow wine with tiny bubbles, this Cremant de Loire Brut is rounded and delicate with a fine, nervy, complex nose and the freshness of Chenin Blanc, floral Chardonnay and fruity Cabernet Franc from 20- to 30-year-old vines. Lively attack, it evolves gracefully across the palate with nice aromatic persistence in the mouth and lingering notes of fresh peaches and pear.

96+ points Robert Parker: "The 2007 Vieux Telegraphe may be the greatest wine made at this property since the 2005 and 1998. Dense ruby/purple-tinged with an exquisite nose of salty sea breezes, licorice, ground pepper, jammy black cherries, black currants, figs, and plums, this is a full-bodied, rich, Provencal-styled offering with lots of sweet, ripe tannin. It is surprisingly accessible for a Vieux Telegraphe (this wine normally shuts down several years after bottling), but it should have great longevity (25+ years) given its power, full-bodied mouthf... Get in on this while it lasts. 89 points Robert Parker: "The 2007 Cotes du Rhone Reserve red (60% Grenache and the rest equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre) possesses beautiful crunchy, juicy, blackberry and cherry fruit as well as hints of underbrush, pepper, and black cherries. This wallet-friendly French 'Blanc de Blancs' is one of our favorite hidden gems. It drinks like an expensive French Champagne with a rich yeasty nose and body to match. It's called 'Cremant de Limoux', the official name for a sparkling wine from Limoux (that meets certain production and quality requirements). Limoux is actually located in southern France near Carcassonne. Definitely worth a serious look. Your friends that haven't seen the price tag will swear they're drinking Champagne worth 2-3 times what you paid! 12% abv.

This delightful Rosé sparkling wine comes from Burgundy. It is made of 80% Pinot Noir, and 20% Gamay Noir. The charming eye of the swan color comes from the addition of Pinot Noir to the wine when the lees are disgorged, following the traditional fermentation in the individual bottle, in the champagne method. On the palate it is very rich and fruity but just off-dry on the finish. The mousse is explosive, with a very creamy palate impression. It shows just a hint of the earthiness of a Pinot Noir from Burgundy. This is charming rosé, subtle and deligh... Read More »

(03/08) According to Robert Parker: "A consistently well-made cru bourgeois, this wine exhibits a deep ruby color and a nice, earthy nose with hints of burning embers intermixed with black fruits, herbs, and spice. In a plentiful vintage, some vineyards in Burgundy produce more wine than they can legally sell. When they do, they declassify the overage as Vin de Table. This white Burgundy from the Mâcon falls into that category. It is actually 2008 Mâcon Villages, but the crop was large and the market softer, thanks to the weak dollar. Remember, if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck but sells for peanuts, who cares what they call it? (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer)

91 points - Wine Advocate: "The nose of lime, chalk, and sea air will pique your appetite and set you salivating even before it hits the palate or rather, I am inclined to say, before you hit the surface of its seemingly bottomless pool of saline, citric refreshment. The amalgam of fresh lime, grapefruit, rhubarb, salt, citrus pips, and iodine on the palate puts me a bit in mind of certain Gruner Veltliner, but the combination of sheer intensity with alcoholic lightness and this wine’s juicy, effortless elegance, as well as the sheer mineral vocabulary r... The bright and elegant entry is followed by characteristic Puligny minerality and a very nice creamy middle, and slightly citrus notes at the finish.
