Domestic Wine
When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural regions within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows and glasses to be raised around the world. We've been selling domestic wines since 1976 and all three of our stores are located in California, so it's safe to say that this territory has a special place in our heart. Take a look...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV Shebang IV bursts from the glass with masses of dark, plump fruit. This juicy, mouth-filling red delivers incredible quality for the money in an up-front generous style meant to be enjoyed over the next year or two. The main varieties are Petite Sirah, Syrah and Alicante Bouschet. If there is a better value in California wine, I would like to know about it. This is a ridiculously delicious wine for $12 a bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014. Morgan Twain-Peterson is one of the most impressive young winemakers I have ever met, and it's not jus... Read More »

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Tastes dramatic and youthfully vital, with fat, fleshy flavors of blackberries, cassis, mocha and sweet cedar, as well as a mineral tang that grounds them. Very upscale and refined, a pure product of superior terroir and winemaking." (5/2011)92 points Wine Spectator: "Enticingly complex, rich and layered, showing fresh, vibrant blackberry, wild berry, cedar and spice flavors, with a texture that's both supple and firm. Full-bodied, with a long, lingering finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2020." 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a restaurant-style Pinot Noir, classy and restrained. It shows classic raspberry, cherry, cola, pomegranate and spice flavors, with brisk Russian River acidity and a silky mouthfeel. Doesn’t seem like an ager, but it’s a lovely wine now and for the next few years." (4/2012)91 points Wine Spectator: "Intense and concentrated, with a tight beam of dried berry, forest floor, mushroom and red licorice, firming and ending with tannins that give this traction. Drink now through 2020. 125 cases made." (2/2012) K&L Notes: MaryAnn Worobiec recently wrote up impressive California Pinots in the Wi... Read More »

92 points Wine & Spirits: "From the Dierberg family's estate-grown fruit, this is a rich Chardonnay with white peach and green pear flavors. It's finely tuned to its wood-15% of the barrels are new-and the flavors are integrated into the plump fruit. The finish is clean, sappy and a little salty, delicious with whole-roasted branzino." (4/2012) K&L Notes: Last year we sold the '08 Three Saints and it took off like a rocket. Now the '09 is here to compete for the title of best California Chardonnay under $15. 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Editors' Choice* Another lovely Julia's Pinot from Cambria, at a fair price. With its light tannins and transparency, it’s definitely Pinot Noir, and the acidity testifies to a cool climate. You might even pick out the Santa Maria Valley from the crushed Indian spices. Subtle but intriguing cherry, cola and plum flavors round out the picture. Drink now-2015." (2/2012)90 points Wine & Spirits: "A rich pinot with warm black cherry flavor, this is dark, chewy and broad. The tannins have a touch of smoky bitterness, needing a steak to bring them into line." Full-bodied, yet graceful and elegant, this is most interesting on the finish, where the flavors glide along and pick up a subtle lift of spice and mocha. Drink now through 2024." (4/2012)Wine & Spirits: "Dark cherry meets oak tannins in this firm, juicy red. There's youthful tension in the tannins, robust and a bit coarser in this vintage than is typical for this wine...a steakhouse pour." From the three talented young men from Banshee--Noah, Steve and Baron--we have the 2010 vintage of Rickshaw Pinot Noir, a superb follow-up to their '09 debut, which blew us away with its offering of a rich, high-caliber Sonoma Pinot delivered for a ridiculously inexpensive $15. Thanks to a cooler vintage with lower yields overall, while the '09 was all about rich, ripe fruit, '10 is more elegant and refined, and in many ways, more charming. Pretty cherry and wild strawberry aromas and flavors leap from the glass, accented by hints of clove, warm earth,... Read More »

This comes from one of the top domestic, cult Chardonnay producers, and, as always is the case, we cannot inform you as to whom it is for legal reasons. To begin with, the highly perfumed bouquet is loaded with Asian spice (star anise), cinnamon apple, white peach and honeysuckle notes with undertones of vanilla and cream that seems to enhance and support these lovely fruit features rather than predominate. On its broad, lush, rich, yet dry mouthfeel, you will be treated to a domestic Chardonnay that has excellent acid structure, wonderful complexity, su... Read More »

There's just a splash of Petite Sirah in this excellent Zin from Shenandoah Vineyards in the Sierra Nevada foothill town of Plymouth, which adds just a touch of meatiness to an otherwise fruit-driven wine. It possesses tons of ripe, varietal fruit in a style that is quite rich but not heavy. Clean citrus and floral notes add freshness on the long finish. Lees stirring gives the wine much of its richness, while aging in steel helps maintain freshness. There is remarkable depth and textural finesse here, never mind a price that is mind-boggling for this level of quality. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014. For most people, the name Cakebread is synonymous with richy, buttery Napy Valley Chardonnay. But did you know they make a fantastic Sauvignon Blanc, too?
