Domestic Wine
When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural regions within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows and glasses to be raised around the world. We've been selling domestic wines since 1976 and all three of our stores are located in California, so it's safe to say that this territory has a special place in our heart. Take a look...

Now closed after a run of 15 or so years of wonderful wines, this HEAVILY discounted Napa Merlot is a crazy steal. As Robert Parker wrote: "Mike Havens, working out of a warehouse in the city of Napa, appears to have settled into an admirable pattern, producing richer and richer Merlots." The 2006 Merlot is delicous right now. A bit softer and rounder than the Cabernet that sold so well last month, it shows excellent balance and a lush, lingering finish. A great buy at this price! 93 points Robert Parker: "The 2006 Proprietary Red Wine Tapestry Reserve (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot) is the finest example of this cuvee I have ever tasted. Flowery, licorice-infused, cassis notes intermixed with forest floor and lead pencil shavings are followed by a layered, impressively built wine with real opulence, lots of red and black fruits, low acidity, and lush tannin. It should drink well for 15+ years. " (12/09) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "A terrific wine, delicious and classic in structure. Show... Read More »

A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah, and 10% Petite Sirah, there are 5,200 cases of this wine, which is truly outstanding and an amazing value. It needs time in the cellar to soften and meld. Should be best between 2009 and 2011, and live far longer." (6/1/2009) 90 points and one star from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "Even accepting that wines from this location take their own sweet time to come around, and, despite the evident closed-in nature of this wine, it is still our sense that there is good , indeed... This brand new wine exhibits aromas of raspberry, blackberry, mint and black cherries. Vanilla and short bread cookie notes from oak aging bring balance and frame the ripe berry flavors. The tannins are fine and chalky, and there is also a mineral/earthy note to the wine that contributes to the multi-layer characteristics. A classic Napa Valley Cab and at a ridiculously fair price!

91 points and the top scored wine in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate "Fifty Super Domestic Wine Values:" "The sensational 2008 Chardonnay Central Coast, which is fermented and aged completely in stainless steel with no malolactic fermentation, is a 30,000-cuvee of fabulous Chardonnay. Described by Robert Parker as Copain's interpretation of a St-Joseph or Crozes-Hermitage, the Saisons des Vins "L'Hiver" is consistently an incredible value-driven syrah that showcases winemaker Wells Guthrie's talent. Guthrie, who spent time working with such famed Rhône producers as Michel Chapoutier and Jean-Louis Chave, deftly incorporates what he learned in France with a deep understanding of California-grown syrah. The 2008 vintage in Edna Valley was fantastic, and it shows on this bright, value-priced Chardonnay. Warm days, cool nights and steady but mild winds helped the grapes develop fully but slowly. Partial barrel fermentation, partial malo and extended lees contact give this wine an incredible texture with plenty of acidity to keep it food friendly. It tends toward the tropical, with pineapple, guava and peach aromas and flavors touched off by Tahitian vanilla, cinnamon and colve spice with a streak of minerality.
