94 points Wine Enthusiast: "A nice surprise. Great density and richness with layers of dark fruit and spice. Thick concentration and a bold, confident presentation. Plush texture, length and density. Age 5-10 more years." (5/2012)93 points James Suckling: "Dark fruit, with roses, incense and nutmeg on the nose. Full-bodied, with velvety and rich tannins and a long and delicious finish. Coffee bean and cedar undertone. Better than 2006. Drink now or hold." (1/2012) K&L Notes: The first scent of this Brunello smells regal; there is a powerful statement of place and for Poggiarellino that is marasca cherry that wild and game... Read More »

Last February the "K&L Squadra Italiana" visited the small Ferrero winery in Montalcino. Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino has been their focus for the last decade but in the BOOM that was happening in Tuscany they too decided to buy some vineyard land about 20 minutes away from Montalcino, excellent soil, great exposure, bargain price, they were really excited. They planted non Montalcino varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Montepulciano and Alicante. The Cabernet, Merlot and Alicante all scored 90 or 91 points in the Wine Spectator and ... Read More »

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Salice Salentino Riserva 50th Vendemmia is big, powerful and super intense. Ripe black fruits, licorice, smoke, ash and game come through in this assertive Salice Salentino. Silky tannins round out the finish. As the name states, the 50th Vendemmia celebrates the estate's 50th harvest. The Riserva is 90% Negroamaro and 10% Malvasia Nera, aged in neutral French oak. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022." 90 points Wine Spectator: "Sweet blackberry, plum and pomegranate fruit is fresh and vibrant as this red unfolds across the palate. Hints of flowers and spices intermingle, but this is more about the juicy fruit. Drink now through 2018." (1/2012) K&L Notes: The Michele Chiarlo Barbera d'Asti "Le Orme" is the first and only Italian wine to have ever received the "Best Value" designation from all the top wine magazines in the world: Decanter, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, the Wine Spectator and Gambero Rosso! Its price tag may lead you to underestimate it's body, complexity, richness. A great ... Read More »

Giovanni Blason and his wife Valentina are young producers who continuously surprise us with the price-to-quality ratio of their wines, earning them tons of kudos in Gambero Rosso and beyond. They come from the Isonzo region of Northern Italy, right up against the Slovenian border. Their Pinot Grigio is really sensational, full in the mouth, rich on the palate and extraordinarily drinkable at this price!

It has a lean and compact feel in the mouth with lingering tones of fragrant peach and lemon-lime." This has been the #1 selling Italian wine for more than a decade at K&L! You can't get that kind of continued success without having a supremely fantastic quality to price ratio. The south Tuscan coast is a breadbasket of wine making, stable temperatures, solid history of quality yet no fame and fortune. Our benefit is the incredibly price bargains that come out of the region! This wine is wonderful, soft, forward and easy to drink Sangiovese with an enticing mixture of cherry, plum and a hint of subtle soil character and it is affordable enough to open ... Read More »

Elio Grasso is one of the best producers of Barolo. His estate, a beautiful house and cellar surrounded by improbably steep vineyards, is outside the town of Monforte, on the eastern side of the Barolo appellation. Elio works mostly in the vineyards, increasingly leaving the cellar work to his son Gianluca, who recently graduated from the enology school in Alba. The Gavarini vineyard is wholly owned by the Grassos. It produces this elegant, value-priced red. A dead ringer for a fine Barolo, and offered at a fraction of the price!

Inky darkness and loads of aromatic momentum in the form of blackberry, cherry liqueur, spice, leather, tobacco, rum cake, dark cinnamon, vanilla bean and bitter chocolate. Impressive complexity. Soft, ripe and generous on the close, but not overdone or overripe. Well-contained and balanced." Here are three liters of Pinot Bianco with a hint of Pinot Grigio (though, it cannot be labeled as such because the DOC’s laws do not recognize box wine, as of yet.). I think there is no tastier, more versatile white wine in our store right now that beats this Bianco for value and pure drinkability. It combines the body and weight of Chardonnay (to which it is distantly related) and the minerality and freshness of Pinot Grigio into the perfect cocktail white. Ideal for keeping in the fridge for the occasional glass of white or the occasional, impromtu pa... Read More »

(12/2011)90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Villa Antinori comes across as richer, darker and weightier than the 2007 tasted alongside it. Black cherries, smoke, licorice and tar are some of the notes that emerge from this powerful entry-level red. A long, intense finish rounds things out nicely. Villa Antinori is predominantly Sangiovese, with some Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014." (8/2011)

Piero Antinori is the Robert Mondavi of Italy! A great producer revolutionizing his industry and region. This easy to drink classic is predominantly Sangiovese. A great value, actually at this price, a steal! The Santa Cristina Sangiovese was first made in 1946, and it remains a benchmark in easy-drinking and affordable Sangiovese. Full of red fruit with subtle undertones of leather, minerals and dried herbs, all balanced by soft tannins. Drink it with lasagna bolognese or homemade polpete.

A second label of Valle dell'Acate's, the Case Ibidini range (pronounced ‘bidini) consists of varietally labeled wines from the estate intended for more casual consumption. The local name of the area where the estate is situated, Bidini, is drawn from the ancient root Bidis. This in turn referred to the name of a group of early Hellenic settlers who populated the area nearly 20 centuries ago. I’ve been a huge fan of the Selvagrossa winery in the Marche since I first tasted their wines five or so years ago. The 2009 Selvagrossa "Muschén" is this producer’s entry-level wine and is made of 50% Sangiovese, 30% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It’s also ridiculously delicious for the price. Redolent of pretty, restrained red and blackberry fruit, spice and a hint of sweet herb, this wine was perfect with a rabbit loin spring roll I had at Animal restaurant in LA. 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Lamuri is Tasca's mid-range Nero d'Avola, although it is a wine that regularly overdelivers for its price. Sweet candied fruit, herbs and flowers meld together nicely in this polished, mid-weight red. The 2009 is a somewhat firm Lamuri that will require at least 6-12 further months in bottle. I especially like the intensity and drive of the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. From top to bottom this is an impressive set of wines from Tasca d'Almerita. 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Assisi Rosso is a new wine from Falesco. The blend is 70% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Interestingly, the Assisi Rosso shows more Sangiovese character than the estate's pure Sangiovese. Sweet tobacco, underbrush, licorice and cherries flow from this beautifully delineated, layered wine. This is another strong effort from Falesco, not to mention a terrific value. This full bodied white made from 100% Cortese is fresh and fruity with scents of white flowers and a pleasantly though quite dry palate. Rich and balanced, this elegant white is soft and round, but somehow structured; it is well-matched to fish and fowl dishes. The 25 hectare Carmelitani estate was planted in the fourteenth century by the Carmelite monks. The grapes undergo a cool fermentation to preserve their naturally fruity aromas and acidity. Importer Oliver McCrum writes: "This rosé, typically named 'Cerasuolo,' is a shocking value given the prices of some of the well-known rosés from southern France. (The Montepulciano grapes are crushed, the skins macerage for 12 hours or so, then the wine is vinified off the skins like a white.) Good solid deep pink color; aroma and flavor of strawberry, with some herbal notes; lively and fresh on the palate but flavorful enough to stand up to all sorts of food. Grilled chicken or salmon come to mind."
