Bordeaux

We're extremely focused on Bordeaux - several staff members fly over to the region on multiple trips each year to taste new vintages from barrel and older vintages from bottle. K&L also enjoys excellent relationships with negociants and châteaux, and over the years we've established outstanding allocations on the top wines. It hasn't hurt that one of K&L's owners is a complete Bordeaux fanatic and our main buyer. The top red wines are typically blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and the white are primarily Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, though the blends vary substantially depending on which part of the region you're talking about. Within Bordeaux you'll also find the sweet wines of Sauternes. Interested in great Bordeaux? Look no further...

2005 l'Avocat Rouge, Graves

Ch. L’Avocat is from the small commune of Cerons, which is located just north of Barsac and Sauternes in the southern Graves appellation. I met Nicola Allison at a small conference of Women from Bordeaux and Napa Valley in Napa earlier. She followed my advice by sending her wines to our hotel in April to be tasted and Clyde and I liked them. I followed up by visiting the estate almost 8 weeks later and was shown the gravely, plateau vineyards by her husband Sean who manages the vines. The vineyards were purchased by the Allisons in 2002; the fruit was pr... Read More »

2006 Birot Rouge, Premiere Côtes de Bordeaux (was $15.)

This wine was made by Eric Fournier of Chateau Canon fame. A nice combination of New World elements (rich currant and blackberry fruit and nice ripeness) along with balancing elements of cigar box and pepper. Moderate amounts of tannin, and a very low price, make it a great introduction to the wines of Bordeaux.

Château Sansonnet may very well be the best Bordeaux producer you've never heard of! Located at the east of Saint-Emilion, on the highest point of the plateau, it neighbors a bunch of great classified growth Bordeaux properties. The d'Aulan family took it over in 1999, and they have renovated this property, pouring many Euros into the winery and vineyards. And what does this have to do with Clos Kalinda? No barriques are used in the production of this soft, sweet-tasting Bordeaux, which is fine with us. Vinification is made in the property's original concrete tanks, and only a medium-length maceration is sought so that the wine's rich and ripe fruit is never disturbed by a heavy overlay of tannins. The wine is aged in tank only, keeping the fruit pure and vibrant till release. 2003 Potensac, Médoc
2003 Potensac, Médoc

89 points Robert Parker: "The dark plum/purple-tinged 2003 Potensac is a sleeper of the vintage. Sweet, exotic scents of mincemeat, black currants, cherries, and crushed rocks are followed by an elegant, fleshy, forward, delicious claret to enjoy over the next 5-7 years, although this wine has a tendency to last longer. It is one of the finest Potensacs produced in several years." (04/06) According to the Wine Spectator: "Very pretty blackberry and currant aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a silky finish. Nicely done. ... Read More »

2006 Brane-Cantenac, Margaux
2006 Brane-Cantenac, Margaux

92 points Robert Parker: "I can’t say enough about how beautifully classic, racy, and gracious the wines of Brane Cantenac have become over the last decade. The stunningly elegant 2006 exhibits a sweet, subtle smoke note intermixed with creme de cassis in its medium-bodied style with superb nobility, concentration, and sweet tannin. Possessing a complex, luscious personality with strikingly beautiful, velvety tannins, it should be at its finest between 2012-2025+." (02/09) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Displays plum jam and currant bush on the nose. Full-b... Read More »

2005 Bad Boy Bordeaux

According to Robert Parker: "A superb sleeper of the vintage, this Bordeaux blend from Jean-Luc Thunevin delivers everything it should. Loads of plum, cassis, and cherry fruit are found in this silky-textured, medium-bodied, pure, delicious effort. Thunevin has unquestionably hit a home run with this bargain-priced 2005. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years. Bordeaux needs to make more wines such as this." (08/08) 95% Merlot, 5% Cab Franc. GARAGISTE I am BLACK SHEEP wouldn't deign BAD BOY I remain.

2008 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (Pre-Arrival) Top Pick!
2008 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (Pre-Arrival)

96-98+ points Robert Parker: "A wine for our children's children. Nobody in Bordeaux is more attentive to detail than Alfred Tesseron is at Pontet-Canet....the 2008 will not be close to drinkability for at least a decade, and it should still be in superb form circa 2060. An absolutely amazing effort, it boasts an inky/black/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of creme de cassis, graphite, charcoal, and incense, blockbuster depth, and full-bodied power. The tannins are high, but they are remarkably velvety as well as well-integrated. Sensatio... Read More »
