Bordeaux

We're extremely focused on Bordeaux - several staff members fly over to the region on multiple trips each year to taste new vintages from barrel and older vintages from bottle. K&L also enjoys excellent relationships with negociants and châteaux, and over the years we've established outstanding allocations on the top wines. It hasn't hurt that one of K&L's owners is a complete Bordeaux fanatic and our main buyer. The top red wines are typically blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and the white are primarily Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, though the blends vary substantially depending on which part of the region you're talking about. Within Bordeaux you'll also find the sweet wines of Sauternes. Interested in great Bordeaux? Look no further...

90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "(Neal Martin on eRobertParker.com) Tasted at Vintex. 2001 Sarget de Gruaud Larose, St-Julien

This second wine of Gruaud Larose performed very well in 2001, with intense concetration and complexity. Plus it is drinking well now. Parker rated the first wine 90 points. This estate is one of K&L's veteran Bordeaux expert Ralph Sands' favorites. According to Ralph: "The style of Gruaud is unique, and the vineyard blend has a lot to do with this. Made from 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec, it is one of the few wines left in Bordeaux that still uses all five grape varietals."

2010 Leo de La Gaffeliere Bordeaux Rouge
2010 Leo de La Gaffeliere Bordeaux Rouge

Produced by the owner of Château la Gaffelière (Saint-Emilion), which just happened to receive 91-93 points from Parker. This rarely encountered Leo de la Gaffeliere can be thought of as Gaffeliere's third wine. It is named after the founding father of this estate, Count Léo de Malet Roquefort. A fine bottle for early consumption.

2009 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe (Pre-Arrival) Top Pick!
2009 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe (Pre-Arrival)

93-96 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(a blend of 90% cabernet sauvignon, 7% merlot, and 3% petit verdot; 100% new oak) Bright ruby-red. Exhilarating nose awash with fresh blackberry, blackcurrant, mineral, violet and rose aromas. Absolutely seamless on entry, with a beautiful mineral underpinning to the pure red cherry, fresh blackcurrant and blackberry flavors. Long and very pure on the finish, showing extremely polished tannins. This is like an essence of almost weightless yet highly concentrated cabernet sauvignon as only (great) Bordeaux can deliver. The lively but harmonious acids make... Read More »
