Domestic Wine
When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural regions within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows and glasses to be raised around the world. We've been selling domestic wines since 1976 and all three of our stores are located in California, so it's safe to say that this territory has a special place in our heart. Take a look...

From Wine Spectator: "Offers baked cherry pie, with rhubarb and blueberry, showing a wonderful fruit profile that's spicy, elegant and easy to drink. Great balance. Drink now. 35,000 cases made." (Web only, 2009) When James Laube blogged about Redtree Pinot Noir, we were all left sitting with cartoon-y question marks floating above our heads. Redtree? But for once Wine Spectator actually put a wine on our radar before their score and review made it scarce. Usually it is exactly the opposite - by the time Spectator or Parker or any of the myriad of other... Read More »

91 points and a Top 100 Value of the and Best Buy, Wine & Spirits: "This has satisfying savory aromas of tree bark, tobacco and sundried tomato to complement the dark, plumy fruit. There’s enough of a red tinge to that fruit to give the wine freshness and energy. A steal of a cab and a great choice for grilled short ribs." (06/09) According to Wine Spectator: "This firm red offers a prominent licorice-pepper character weaving through the blackberry and cream flavors, which mingle effectively on the generous finish. Drink now through 2010." (03/09)

This is a wonderfully delicious wine bursting with juicy pear, green apple and citrus flavors. A touch of barrel fermentation adds a kiss of spice to the mix. By sourcing fruit from less expensive regions they have produced a quality wine at a bargain price. This is your perfect party chardonnay. Specially bottled for K&L by a Mendocino winery.

93 points from Wine Enthusiast Magazine: "Here's a Syrah that marches to the beat of its own drummer. Eschewing massive fruit, it shows a subtle, complex mélange of dried blackberries and bitter black cherries, olive tapenade, tobacco, dark unsweetened chocolate, leather and the white pepper of a fine Syrah. Drink this dramatic wine now and through 2011." (03/08) Here is another ridiculous deal from the Domestic Team at K&L. 90 points and one star from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "14% Petite Sirah. The ripe blackberry and plum-like fruit scents associated with this vineyard in its best vintages are here delivered with both intensity and vitality. The wine is full on the palate without losing itself to the heaviness that sometimes can be part of its character and, instead, is balanced and comes with tannin for a few years of age." 90 points Wine & Spirit Magazine (10/08). Named Moobuzz, referring to the land of milk and honey (get it? Cows=milk; bees=honey. Haha!) otherwise known as the Sonoma Coast, this chardonnay is like a warm, tropical breeze. Papaya and banana perfumes waft from the glass, framed by caramel and vanilla notes from sur lie barrel-aging in French oak. On the palate, the wine is like lemon crème brulee served with poached pears and local wildflower honey. Sealed with the unique "Zork" closure, it's also sure to be as fresh as the day it was bottled and easy to ... Read More »

Bryan and I found another beautiful wine from Willowbrook. The first wine we offered you, the Willowbrook "DuNah Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir made by Joe Otos, blew us away with its quality and price. Now we've been offered their 2007 Mendocino County Pinot Noir. This wine is medium-bodied with a lovely nose of cranberry, Bing cherry and just a hint of cedar. The mid-palate is balanced with bright red fruit, cocoa and a beautiful streak of minerality. The wine finishes long and fresh. $16.99 is an unbelieveable price for this wine and, once again, p... 93 points and two stars from the Connoisseurs Guide to California Wine: "Nicely concentrated blackberry aromas gain extra range and interest from layered notes of spice, creamy oak and briar, and the deep fruit continues in flavors that have both wonderful berryish focus and solid tannic structure leading into a long, convincing finish. This lovely bottling comes on the heels of last year's success after several vintages in which Rosenblum seemed to lose the plot with the grapes from one of our favorite Zinfandel vineyards. A favorite value cabernet, the new vintage of Avalon Napa Valley ups the ante, including fruit from all the region's great sub-appellations - Howell Mountain, Rutherford and Oakville - as well as fruit from along the Silverado Trail and Soda Canyon. The 2006 is brick red, with a lovely cab nose of Bing cherry, cassis and anise, with secondary aromas of vanilla and clove spice, shortbread and smoke. Supple and easy to drink, the fruit and spice come through concentrated on the palate. A great follow up to their widely touted 2005.

92 points and two stars from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "13% Petite Sirah. There is a mix of drama and control in this wine, and it deviates from the expected norm for Rockpile Zinfandels to its great benefit. The depth and intensity possible from wines of the area are certainly evident here but so too is a brighter, more vibrant quality that firms up the wine's back end and finish while adding a bit of aging potential that should see it grow in the bottle." Can't get your hands on enough Rombauer Chardonnay to satisfy your thirst? Try this "baby Rombauer" from Napa Cellars. Founded by Rich Frank and Koerner Rombauer in 1996, Napa Cellars is the better known winery's more casual label, boasting drink-it-every-day prices. Even better than the 2006! The 2007 Poppy is made from a combination of Arroyo Seco, Santa Lucia Highlands and Monterey County pinot noir, but there were no notable heat spikes to throw off even ripening. Like its predecessor, though, there's tons of vibrant pure fruit on the nose and palate, with hints of spice for intrigue. An affordable, everyday drinker!

96 points Robert Parker: "There are 6,500 cases of the superb 2006 Dominus (91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot). Its dark plum/purple color is accompanied by aromas and flavors of truffles, forest floor, black cherries, black currants, and Asian spices. One of the finest wines of the vintage, it is complete, full-bodied, and seamlessly built with beautiful ripe tannins, low acidity, and a luscious, layered mouthfeel. Another beautiful zinfandel from the folks at Shenandoah Vineyards in Amador County! There's plenty of fruit, moderate tannins and juicy acidity harmonizing like the Beach Boys. Elegant and polished. Drink now through 2011." (Web Only, 2008) Rosenblum's "Rominger" Syrah is co-fermented with a bit of Viognier in the style of a Northern Rhone. Castle Rock Pinot Noir was produced from grapes grown in Northern California’s beautiful Mendocino County, where vineyards were first planted in the early 1860’s. There is a sense of refinement and pure precision about this bottling that not only moves it to the head of the class but sets it in a class all its own. Very deep and impeccably structured, it eschews runaway ripeness in favor of layered richness and real nuance, and it begs for comparison with the fine wines of Côte Rôtie rather than its more blustery Californian kin.
