Old and Rare Wine
Below you'll find our selection of old and rare wines. These bottles are often purchased directly from the cellars of famous wineries (in California as well as Europe). Additionally, K&L buys back a tremendous amount of wine from customers. Only after carefully scrutinizing the storage conditions and physically examining the bottles do we put these wines up for sale. Because these older (often irreplaceable) wines are sold on an "as is" basis, we place our reputation on each old and rare bottle in our inventory. Please understand that our library wines often present qualities that are vastly different from their current release counterpoints- elegance, subtlety, complexity- the hallmarks of a mature wine. Please be advised that all sales in this department are final. Many thanks to our great customers, both new and old. We're constantly buying properly stored wines and would be glad to make an offer on your collection. If you have wines for sale, contact our head old and rare wine buyer Joe Zugelder at (800) 247-5987 ext. 2719 or via email at joez@klwines.com

1999 Labegorce, Margaux $36.99
1999 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac $89.99
1996 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (1.5L) $1,999.00
This is an incredibly rare, fully mature, Spanish gem. Produced from the steep, slate, terraced vineyards of Bierzo by Spain's legendary Mariano Garcia (while he was still making wine at Vega Sicilia!), here is a beautiful example of a perfectly aged Spanish wine that has developed quite beautifully in bottle. Produced from 40% Cabernet, 30% Merlot and 30% Mencia, think of it as a supple, balanced, old school styled Bordeaux blend with a Castillian twist. Savory cherry, hints of sage leaf, green and black peppercorn and an unmistakable character of mat... Read More »

A fabulous Right Bank vintage and this wine is a true bargain in old and rare wines. (Clyde Beffa, K&L) K&L's notes - A ripe, sweet, and delicious wine with great balance. Comes from an appellation that's getting a lot of attention in '98. The property is just north of the center of St. Emilion. Easy to like, this wine has lots of toasty, vanillan oak aroma and sweet ripe blackberry fruit. Flashy style. Good value. 90-91 points Robert Parker: "The finest Grand Pontet yet tasted, the saturated black/purple-colored 1998 offers a knock-out nose of nearl... Read More »

Some of you may remember the chaos we sparked late in 2007 when we sent out an e-mail about a little known producer called Eric Lecours. We were featuring his Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and it almost started a Beatles-like stampede at our doors. If I remember correctly we sold out the near 100 cases of Pinot Noir in about 3 hours. Unfortunately this year there is no Pinot, Eric decided not to make any and he is still trying to decide if he wants to continue with the varietal. I told him he was crazy if he didn't, that K&L alone would take at least half of... Read More »

This is an outstanding wine, one of the best of the 1994 vintage. 91 points Robert Parker: "It is no secret that Anthony Barton's efforts over the last decade at his St.-Julien estate, Leoville-Barton, is resulting in terrific wines at still reasonable prices. This estate has been extremely successful in recent vintages. An impressive, serious, classic Bordeaux for collectors who are willing to forget about it for at least a decade, this well-endowed offering is a 30-year wine. The dense, murky, purple color, closed aromatics, massive flavor richness, an... Read More »

According to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Loads of minerals are found in the nose of the 2004 Macon-Villages. Medium-bodied and silky-textured, it is a spicy, well-balanced wine with almond and white fruit flavors. It will be bottled after the 2006 harvest. Drink it between 2007 and 2011." (06/06) From the San Francisco Chronicle: "This appellation in southern Burgundy still fights the reputation for also-ran Chardonnays, but this effort from one of the region's steadfastly independent families in the village of Chaintre shows its full potential. Ri... Read More »

According to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Macon-Chaintre displays aromas of fresh minerals and ripe apples. Its medium-bodied personality is satin-textured, expressive, and boasts loads of white fruit flavors. Drink it between 2007 and 2011." (06/06) Stunning richness for a wine from this region. Loads of ripe apples and quince with floral tones and candied walnuts. There is great underlying complexity and depth to these wines that makes you think more of the wines of the Cote de Beaune than Maconnais. (Keith Mabry, K&L Hollywood) Please n... Read More »

98 points WIne Enthusiast: "This is an exceptional wine, as is the vintage. The fruits - grapefruit, crisp red apple - balance with a fine yeasty character. There is a great depth of flavor, the fruits going in a pure line of freshness. The one problem is that it is much too young, the result of the deamnd from the market for the next vintage. Age this wine for at least four years." (12/08) 96+ points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: Roederer’s 2002 Cristal is still in its infant, fresh stage. Subtle notes of pears, flowers, spices, mint, minerals and oak ... Read More »

Clyde (K&L's Bordeaux buyer) has liked this wine so much, he's had 6 bottles in the first 10 days we've had this in stock. The wine is perfect right now. Old school Bordeaux, with sweet cassis fruit, some minerality and lingering finish. Served with a steak, it goes down quickly and offers immediate gratification. Decant 15 minutes and enjoy. According to the Wine Spectator: "A light '97, with good ripe fruit character ... Drink now." (01/2000) Ten year-plus mature Bordeaux for $29.99 - unheard of in this day of sky high Bordeaux prices. And the cases ... Read More »

Solid, well-made Premier Cru Chablis, for a song! This is rich and bright, with good acidity and solid minerality. The half bottles are fresh and crisp. Although from 2003, they are not over-ripe nor fat. Just a nice, rich, mineral-driven Chablis. If you are looking for a nice crisp half bottle you can have and enjoy with a first course, for under $7.50, this is for you! Where are the oysters on the half shell? (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer, 02/09) Allen Meadows writes: "This is fresher still with distinct notes of grapefruit on the nose and ... Read More »

If you've been a fan of the other older vintage Burgess Cabs we've been fortunate to have uncovered, then the 1995 will blow you away. Deep red in the glass the wine starts with aromas of candied cherries and Asian spice quickly followed on the palate by black cherries, black plums and bitter chocolate. A large-scaled wine that has ample fruit and oak it is amazingly smooth and supple both in the mouth and on the finish. This wine is still remarkably young and vibrant and could easily last 10 years more, but why wait? It is stunning right now. (Alex Pro... Read More »

The wine at Lynch Bages is outstanding. It's a blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot, 15% Merlot. Spicy and toasty on the nose, with that tell-tale cigar box quality. It has dense fruit, and is very thick in the mouth. Sweet and rich. Broad and dense. Magnificent! 90 points Robert Parker: "This dense ruby/purple-colored 1999 is a modern day clone of this estate's wonderful 1962. The 1999 reveals forward, open-knit notes of creme de cassis and earth. It is fleshy, medium to full-bodied, and succulent, with supple tannin, ex... Read More »

This Champagne is a blend of 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay from organic, estate vineyards. Mr. Brulez sells two-thirds of his grapes, and keeps the best third to make only vintage Champagne. He is the chairman of the Dijon University Alumni Association, and looks more to Burgundy than to Reims for the inspiration for his wines. This comes from one of the earliest vintages in the long history of Champagne, in fact they had not picked so early since 1852! Like elsewhere in Europe, it was a very warm year, and this Champagne is marked by the breadth and... Read More »

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a classic Dom Pérignon vintage. It’s big and fruity initially, a mouthful of ripeness. Then the texture and structure of this dense wine come through. It’s as much wine as Champagne, rich, the apple and fresh pear flavors vying with yeasty and a tense crispness. Worth aging, it will be even better in 3-4 years." (12/1/2008) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Brut Dom Perignon is a gorgeous, seductive wine that floats on the palate with remarkable grace. Toasty aromas meld into freshly cut flowers, apri... Read More »

One of the last available of this great vintage, maybe the greatest in a generation from one of K&L's favorite Champagne producers. An recently disgorged (RD) release; it is STUNNING. The 1996 vintage blends 80% pinot noir and 20% chardonnay fermented in stainless steel and measures a very high 6% total acidity, even after full malolactic fermentation. The sur-lie aging takes palce ona cork rather than a steel cap, and all the bottles are hand-disgorged. The color is like dark hay and the nose reminds me of the fresh brioche that I have been treated to a... Read More »

95 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Seemingly wishing to push the envelope, the Valettes aged their 1999 Pouilly-Fuisse Clos de Monsieur Noly Reserve Vieilles Vignes for 5 years (60 months!) in barrel before bottling it. Boasting a nose reminiscent of a complex Vin Jaune or Chateau Chalon from the Jura, yet without those wines' distinctive oxidized traits, it reveals aromas of roasted almonds, lemongrass liqueur, a myriad of exotic spices, and hints of red berries. Immensely rich, full-bodied, broad-shouldered, and expansive, this stunning eff... Read More »

90-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Mouth-watering aromas of super-ripe spiced pears are found in the nose of the medium-bodied 2004 Pouilly-Vinzelles. Impressively deep, fleshy, and lush, it coats the palate with thick layers of spicy white fruits. Projected maturity: 2007-2013." (06/06) 91 points in Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Yellow-gold. Powerfully scented bouquet of smoky pear, peach skin, toasted nuts, turpentine and floral honey. This reminded me a wine from the Jura, and I'm sure that drinkers who prize modern, fruit-dri... Read More »

This is simply one of our best Champagnes at any price. In the past, we have only been able to get a trickle here and a trickle their- But with ownership in flux, and the economy suffering, we secured not only a good quantity (36 cases) but also a fantastic price. We sold the 1995/1996 blend of this Champagne at $79.99, and can now offer the superior (and now all barrel fermented) 1999 at $49.99. This is an Estate newly imported into the US or more accurately sold beyond a few private clients of the owner in the Mosel. This happens to be the cousin and neighbor of Martin Kerpen of Heibert Kerpen, go figure right? Anyway we were turned on to these wines by a friend who is now importing them in Berkeley and we thank him for that. These are old style Mosel wines from vintages that were not shy on acid and they have not moved from the cellar where they were born until making their maiden voyage last month and landing here on our welcoming shelves.... 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Light gold. Smoky pear and baked apple aromas, with baking spices and anise building with aeration. Deep and chewy, with concentrated orchard fruit flavors and bitter lime zest on the close. This really clings to the palate. More vibrant and fruity than the other wines today." (03/08) 89-91 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Smoky oak and ripe pears can be discerned in the aromatic profile of the broad, expansive 2004 Vire-Clesse. According to Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, May/June 00: "Bright medium ruby. Lively aromas of black raspberry, bitter chocolate and mint. Good texture and restrained sweetness; dark berry flavors are quite youthfully unevolved. Solidly structured wine, finishing with firm but fine tannins and very good length." K&L's notes - This lovely wine is a bit richer and more tannic than their 1997. Very focused and quite mineral on the palate. Good fruit and it could stand decanting an hour or so. Stefan Bollig (vintage 1961) is passionately devoted to his work and is a fine example of the new generation of Mosel vintners. The family has been producing wine since the 17th Century, but new cellars and house have been built on the outskirts of Trittenheim. The total holdings of 4 hectares (10 acres) are tended by the family themselves, the steeply sloping vineyards being composed mainly of slatey soil. Stefan has been managing the estate since 1987, after completing his viticultural studies and practical experience in Trier and Bad Kreuznach. Stefan... Read More »
