Burgundy

Welcome to one of the most historic wine regions in the world, a province of eastern France that is famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of other grapes are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) This is complicated and exciting territory - the hallowed ground where more than a few bonafide wine geeks end up. View our selection...

Louis Bouillot Cremant de Bourgogne "Perle d'Aurore" Brut Rosé Top Pick!
Louis Bouillot Cremant de Bourgogne "Perle d'Aurore" Brut Rosé

Wine & Spirits: "Gentle strawberry fruit fills this soft rosé, its zesty finish keeping it clean. A fine aperitif." (4/2014) Wine Enthusiast: "Full, ripe wine, layered with fruits and a dry, more mineral core. The wine has good depth of flavor, strawberries, red currants and a citrus cut that keeps the wine fresh at the end." (11/2013) K&L Notes: This delightful sparkling rosé wine comes from Burgundy. It is made of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Gamay Noir. The charming eye of the swan color comes from the addition of Pinot Noir to the wine when the lees are disgorged, following the traditional fermentation in... Read More »

2014 Domaine Renaud Pouilly-Fuissé "Cuvée Vieilles Vignes"

Once in a great while you find wines from the Mâcon so good that tasting them blind you are forced to apply some much higher (and more expensive) appellation to it. Often, such a wine comes from hillside vineyards, with better drainage and cooler nights. This is such a wine, from the slopes below the giant monolith of rock that is Solutré. Domaine Renaud is a small operation, making Mâcon, Pouilly-Fuissé and St. Veran from 12 hectares of estate vineyards. 2013 Domaine des Niales Rhedon-Marin Mâcon-Villages "Vieilles Vignes"

This is a charming Chardonnay from a small grower in the Macon. Lionel Rhedon-Marin is a recent graduate of the College of Viticulture in the nearby village of Davaye, where Guffens trained. All of their young-vine fruit is sold in bulk to one of the better negociants, who is pleased to have it, since Lionel is such a careful grower. But their old-vine fruit, all over 45 years of age, is kept for the Domaine wine, which is charming and elegant. 2012 Domaine Faiveley Mercurey "Clos Rond" Top Pick!
2012 Domaine Faiveley Mercurey "Clos Rond"

The Mercurey Clos Rond comes from a single vineyard in Mercurey. The name means "the walled vineyard in that brambly area," derived from the local word "Ronde" instead of the more usual French "Ronce," meaning brambles. In a land where ownership is usually splintered, this vineyard is a rare case where the entire vineyard is under one owner, Domaine Faiveley. It lies on a gentle slope, with rich red-brown soil, a fairly high clay content and buried limestone beneath. The result is a Pinot Noir displaying rich, round fruit, both red and black, and just a ... Read More »

A smoky and ever-so-mildly exotic nose features notes of various white orchard fruit, acacia blossom and tangerine peel hints. The cool, pure and focused middle weight flavors possess good volume but also fine detail that continues onto the refreshing, complex and beautifully long finish. 2013 Domaine Desertaux-Ferrand Bourgogne Rouge

Located in the heart of the vineyards of Burgundy, on the border of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, this estate was established in 1899 by Amable Désertaux. The area was then about three hectares. It was not until the arrival of Bernard and Janine Désertaux that it grew to 12 ha. The installation of their children, Christine and Vincent in 1995 and 2000, has resulted in some very fine wines, and as they still fly under the radar, these are very affordable, too! Lots of wine for an extremely modest sum.

This a new acquisition of one of the family's historic vineyards in Santenay from his brother Vincent who left the wine business to farm cereal grains west of Paris. It shows a very pretty thread of minerality running through it, which comes from the relatively shallow topsoil of this site, located above the more well-known Santenay Gravières. This is made from 100% Pinot Noir, hand harvested and all whole cluster fermentation. The palate has a light, apple entry with slightly shrill acidity at the moment. It is very citric in the mouth with bitter lemon on the terse finish" (12/2013) K&L Notes: The Saint Aubin les Charmois is a bit of a lesser-known gem. It is undergoing a renaissance in the 21st century, however; Aubert DeVillaine, proprietor of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti believes so fervently in this grape that he fought for—and won—an all-Aligoté appellation in Bouzeron.
