Bordeaux

We're extremely focused on Bordeaux - several staff members fly over to the region on multiple trips each year to taste new vintages from barrel and older vintages from bottle. K&L also enjoys excellent relationships with negociants and châteaux, and over the years we've established outstanding allocations on the top wines. It hasn't hurt that one of K&L's owners is a complete Bordeaux fanatic and our main buyer. The top red wines are typically blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and the white are primarily Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, though the blends vary substantially depending on which part of the region you're talking about. Within Bordeaux you'll also find the sweet wines of Sauternes. Interested in great Bordeaux? Look no further...

2009 de Chantegrive, Graves Top Pick!
2009 de Chantegrive, Graves

92 points James Suckling: "A solid red with ripe plum, cherry and vanilla character. Full and savory with round and ripe tannins and a long, intense finish. Approachable, but better in 2015." (7/2012) 89-91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Barrel sample. Solidly packed tannins, very firm and structured, a feeling of considerable extract as well as a high toast content." (8/2010)90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A major sleeper of the vintage, this blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot is another 'best ever' performance. 1997 Potensac, Médoc

Jancis Robinson: "Dark glowing crimson. Grunty, very concentrated. Arguably the miracle here is to find a wine from Jean-Hubert Delon under £20. And one you could actually think of drinking too. This should certainly appeal to classicists – especially those knowledgeable enough to know it’s related to the most expensive super second of all, Léoville Las Cases." (9/2011) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A soft, cedary, herbaceous, but pleasant, round, elegant style of wine, with berry and red currant fruit, and a smooth finish..." Jancis Robinson: "Deep crimson. Dusty blackcurrant fruit. Juicy, fresh, straightforward. Lightish, savoury rather than sweet. Moderate tannins, well handled. Not terribly long but harmonious with a dry finish. Drink 2016-2024." (4/2012) James Suckling: "I like the spicy, hazelnut and berry character here. It’s a little lean but shows pretty fruit and refined tannins. Needs one to two years of bottle age to soften: try in 2016." 2010 Arnaud, Bordeaux Supérieur

Another safe bet Bordeaux. 12 months in oak barrels. It has a texture that covers the mouth and a fruity finish. Château Arnaud focuses on consistent quality and tries each year to show the best wine possible. This 2010 vintage is particularly successful. We suggest you along with beef dishes. You can now enjoy in its youth or wait a bit without problems.

2010 Trébiac, Graves Top Pick!
2010 Trébiac, Graves

This K&L favorite consistently overdelivers. This is old-school Graves with great minerality and a tight frame that opens up with aromas of tobacco, oak and black currants and a palate of raspberries with a lushness that points to the high proportion of Merlot in the blend. This tastes like a $30 bottle of wine, which comes in handy at dinner parties!

2012 Grand Bateau Rouge, Bordeaux Top Pick!
2012 Grand Bateau Rouge, Bordeaux

The 2012 Bordeaux vintage produced elegant, soft, early maturing wines-perfect for consuming while you wait for your 2009 and 2010 vintages to soften. Ralph and Alex and I think 2012s, with their relatively low prices, will be a vintage to consider when the wines arrive at our stores. There is a sweetness on the palate that 2011 and 2013 do not have. We fell in love with this wine on our April Bordeaux trip this year. We have carried previous vintages (starting with the 2005 vintage), and this 2012 carries on as a great Bordeaux value. Made from the... Read More »

So enjoyable already. Best ever from here? Better in 2015." (2/2013)92 points Wine Spectator: "This has a really nice graphite frame that drives the core of fig, plum and boysenberry fruit authoritatively, with dense ganache, espresso and tar on the finish. 2001 Lanessan, Haut-Médoc

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Lanessan's 2001 is a consistent overachiever in Haut-Medoc. This wine nearly rivals the outstanding 2000. It is a seriously-extracted, dark ruby/purple-colored offering with ripe cassis fruit, notes of leather and earth, and a hint of truffles. It is medium-bodied, pure, and savory, with copious tannin. It will age well for 10-15 years." (4/2002) K&L Notes: Over 10,000 bottles sold over the years. A perfect drinking wine right now. So delicious and mineral driven. Sweet core of fruit. Buy cases. (4/2010) K&L Notes: Chateau Larteau is a carefully modernized 18th Century property with 12 hectares planted in the gravelly soils beside the Dordogne. Vinification of this 100% Merlot takes place in temperature-controlled concrete vats before the wine is aged for 18 months in 30% new Allier oak barrels. Abundant notes of cedar wood, fruitcake, flowers, creme de cassis and kirsch are all present in this full-bodied, opulent, dense, dark ruby/purple wine. K&L Notes: Château La Prade, just four and a half hectares, was purchased by the Thienpont family in 2000. Despite the tiny size, part of the vineyards are on the limestone plateau and the rest are on a south-facing slope rich in iron. 2010 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 2010 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (100JS, 100RP, 98WE, 97WS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An absolutely amazing wine...It comes from one of the few biodynamic vineyards in Bordeaux, but you are likely to see many more, given the success that Tesseron seems to be having at all levels, both in his vineyards and in his fermentation/winemaking. An astounding, compelling wine with the classic Pauillac nose more often associated with its cross-street neighbor, Mouton-Rothschild, creme de cassis, there are also some violets and other assorted floral notes. The wine has off-the-charts massiveness and intensity but never comes across as heavy, overbearing or astringent. The freshness, laser-like precision, and full-bodied, massive richness and extract are simply remarkable to behold and experience. It is very easy, to become jaded tasting such great wines from a great vintage, but it is really a privilege to taste something as amazing as this. Unfortunately, it needs a

2013 Lynch Bages Blanc, Bordeaux

93 points James Suckling: "This is super-fresh and mineral with oyster shell and salt. Full body with dried lemons and hints of mango. Long and fresh. Crazy grapefruit. Tangy and energetic." (4/2014) Wine Spectator: "Friendly, with shortbread, toasted macadamia nut and straw notes all mingling through the light, herb-tinged finish. (Web-2014)" (4/2014)

2009 Arnauton, Fronsac (Previously $25.00)

91 points James Suckling: "This is a balanced and refined wine with blueberry and chocolate and walnuts. Full-to-medium body, with firm tannins and a lovely finish. Firm and pretty. So there, but will age." (5/2013) Jancis Robinson: "Extremely dark purple. Very rich and lively and with lots of winemaking effort to judge from the nose and life. Well done!" (4/2010) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The basic cuvee, the 2009 Arnauton, is 98% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. It exhibits loads of crushed chalky minerality, some jammy berry fruit, good glycerin, medium body, and a clean, fresh, lively finish. It is a little less complex than I ...Read More »

2010 Haut Charmes, Sauternes (375 ml) Top Pick!
2010 Haut Charmes, Sauternes (375 ml)

Haut Charmes is a very special Sauternes bottling, made from the younger vines of the region's most legendary château. While we aren't allowed to actually reveal the source, it's safe to say its location in the Ciron Valley exposes the Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon fruit to conditions perfect for the development of botrytis. Charming, elegant and an exceptional value for what's in the bottle. A rich wine with fine acidity, the 2010 has wonderful pineapple and coconut aromas that carry through onto the lush palate. A stunning wine just like its big broth... Read More »

2005 Caronne Ste-Gemme, Haut-Médoc

91 points Wine Spectator: "(Smart Buys) Offers raisin and dried fruit, with very ripe fruit aromas and coffee and oak undertones. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long finish. This is pumped up, but I like the flamboyant character. Best after 2011." (3/2008) 88-90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Space limitations did not allow complete tasting notes for this Cru Bourgeois, but 2005 is the finest vintage for these wines since 1982. The range of scores for these wines should give readers an idea of just how consistent this vintage is at this level. Given the style of the vintage, most of these wines should be acces ...Read More »

2001 d'Escurac, Medoc

Jancis Robinson: "62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot. Cork. RS <2 g/l Very dark and with some development evident at the rim and on the nose. Rather simple Cabernet flavours but very correct and without a blemish. Not bad value. (16/20 points)" (12/2009) Whisky Advocate: "This blend of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Sauvignon reveals a saturated ruby/purple color as well as an excellent sweet nose of black cherries, black currants, leather, and a hint of vanilla. It is one of the finest Medoc cru bourgeois. It possesses good ripeness, texture, and fruit in addition to a well-delineated, modera ...Read More »

2010 Divon, St-Georges St-Emilion

We loved this wine on our April 2012 Bordeaux trip. A 2010 with lots of sweetness and forward fruit. Blackberries abound here. Great value. (Clyde Beffa, K&L Co-Owner and Bordeaux Buyer) It comes from the miniscule St-Georges St-Emilion Appellation, which is located within the boundaries of Montagne-St-Emilion. The vineyards of Château Divon have a specially privileged terroir. They face straight south. Always a plus in this uncertain maritime climate!

2011 Capbern Gasqueton, St-Estèphe Top Pick!
2011 Capbern Gasqueton, St-Estèphe

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Firm and structured, this wine, produced by the same team as classed growth Calong-Ségur, has solid architecture. It does also have fine fruitiness and acidity but it is the shape that impresses. Given time, it will develop into an elegant wine. Drink from 2018." (5/2014) Jancis Robinson: "74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot. pH 3.75. Merlot did not have the finesse Millet wanted, hence lower proportion. They were a bit powerful for the finesse of the Cabernet Sauvignon. No hail at Capbern. Deep cherry crimson. Intense ripe cassis, and sweet red cherry on the palate. Touch o ...Read More »

2010 Peyrabon, Haut-Médoc

91 points Wine Spectator: "Rock solid, with a gutsy frame of roasted apple wood and a full-bodied core of plum, boysenberry and black currant fruit. Dense and chewy, displaying spice-studded grip on the finish that courses along vivaciously. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2020. (Web only - 2013)"90 points Wine Enthusiast: "From a property owned by Patrick Bernard of négociant Millésima, this shows the results of considerable investment during the recent years. The wood dominates at this early stage, but it also shows complex fruit to balance the spice and toast ...Read More »

2009 Nairac, Sauternes Top Pick!
2009 Nairac, Sauternes

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Nicolas Tari oversaw a sensational 2009 Chateau Nairac. It has a richer bouquet compared to the 2010 with exuberant, explosive scents of acacia honey, dried apricot and a hint of petrol that transposes the exoticism of the vintage. The palate is well-balanced with a viscous opening. There is plenty of vibrant spicy fruit, interwoven with orange rind and pineapple, leading to a beautifully focused an intense finish. Stack this high in your cellar. Drink 2016-2040+. Tasted March 2014." (6/2014) 92-95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pale, full yellow. Racy aromas of pear, apple, peach and marzipa ...Read More »

2010 Le Bonnat, Graves

Wine & Spirits: "Round and warm with a Creole-like spice, this is a red-fruited wine with a green peppercorn and mint snap. The wine’s dry tannins need braised lamb to bring them into line." (10/2013) Wine Enthusiast: "Packed with dark tannins, this complex wine shows a powerful structure allied with very fresh acidity and red berry fruits. It is still feeling its way, heavy on the texture and still waiting for the fruit. Drink from 2014." (12/2013) Wine Spectator: "A tarry frame surrounds a core of red currant, plum skin and grilled savory notes. A pebbly feel on the finish adds some interest. Drink now thro ...Read More »
