Bordeaux

Bordeaux

We're extremely focused on Bordeaux - several staff members fly over to the region on multiple trips each year to taste new vintages from barrel and older vintages from bottle. K&L also enjoys excellent relationships with negociants and châteaux, and over the years we've established outstanding allocations on the top wines. It hasn't hurt that one of K&L's owners is a complete Bordeaux fanatic and our main buyer. The top red wines are typically blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and the white are primarily Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, though the blends vary substantially depending on which part of the region you're talking about. Within Bordeaux you'll also find the sweet wines of Sauternes. Interested in great Bordeaux? Look no further...

1999 Lanessan, Haut-Médoc

When young the wines of Château Lanessan are typically a deep, intense ruby color with an elegant nose and fruity, floral aromas. On the palate the structure is complex and dense, melting away harmoniously to a good, long finish. When they are older the wines take on a terracotta tint, and the nose becomes increasingly complex with the appearance of plum and undergrowth aromas. The flavors are smooth, warm, and perfectly harmonious, ending with silky tannins. This 18-year-old bottle is drinking perfectly now! According to Robert Parker, "This underrated ... Read More »

(RV)" (9/2017) K&L Notes: In case you haven’t yet heard, the 2015 vintage in Bordeaux was another in a string of greatest vintages of the century, following in the hallowed footsteps of 2000, 2005, 2009 and 2010. 2015 D'Archambeau, Graves Top Pick!
2015 D'Archambeau, Graves

88-90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 d'Archambeau has a strong graphite, pencil box scent on the nose - very Graves in style, almost austere in the context of the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannin, gritty in the mouth with earthy, saline notes on the finish. It's a "grumpy" Graves...but I kind of like it. (NM)" (4/2016)

2004 Moulin-Haut-Laroque, Fronsac Top Pick!
2004 Moulin-Haut-Laroque, Fronsac

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A big time sleeper of the vintage from Fronsac, this beauty from proprietor Jean-Noel Herve has hit the bull’s eye. A dark ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of black currants, sweet cherries, crushed rocks, and a distinctive minerality. It is a medium to full-bodied, structured effort with sweet tannin, decent acidity, and oodles of fruit as well as richness. (RP)" (6/2007)

2009 Branas Grand Poujeaux, Moulis Top Pick!
2009 Branas Grand Poujeaux, Moulis

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A sleeper of the vintage from the backwater appellation of Moulis, the 2009 Branas Grand Poujeaux is a blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot. A big-time wine, opaque purple in color, with loads of cassis, smoke, incense and licorice as well as an earthiness reminiscent of a St.-Estephe, this wine is full-bodied and long, with sweet tannin and an overall classic constitution. It can be approached now but should age nicely for 15-20 years. (RP)" (12/2011) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Clearly ripe, with a juicy core of dark fig, cassis and blackberry flavo ...Read More »

2014 Dassault, St-Emilion (Previously $32)

92 points James Suckling: "Dark fruits and dark tannins are the hallmark of this brooding beast. Either you like rather bold, dry tannins and this will excite you, or it won’t! But I love it." (2/2017) 92 points Vinous: "The 2014 Dassault is bold, fruit-driven and absolutely delicious, although the firm tannins are going to need some time to soften. Plum, violet, licorice and lavender are some of the signatures in this inky, extroverted Saint-Émilion. In 2014, Dassault is a sleeper. Tasted two times. (AG)" (2/2017) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Well-fruited, with fig, blackberry and boysenberry confiture flavors, showing a touch mor ...Read More »

2015 Jouanin, Cotes de Castillon

Thank the emerging region of Cotes de Castillon for this spectacular deal in red Bordeaux from the well-balanced 2015 vintage. This cuvee shares many qualities of top-flight St-Emilion, with a great sweetness of fruit along with vanilla and spicy notes from new oak. Everyone who loves wine knows, it is hard to find a steal in Bordeaux these days, but this wine offers a lot of wine for the money, with layers of lush up-front black and red fruit characteristics, cellar-able, too, over the short term.

2015 d'Yquem, Sauternes 6-pack in OWC (Pre-Arrival)

99-100 points James Suckling: "This is an incredible young Yquem that is so vinous like a great vintage of Montrachet but then on the palate it turns to Yquem with spice, dried fruit and mushroom as well as sweet fruit. Last for minutes. Acidity is all there giving it a dynamic vibrance that jolts your senses. Special wine. It has a little more than than 140 grams of residual sugar, less than the legendary of 2001. But is very close in greatness. Let’s wait and see." (4/2016) 98-100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Château d'Yquem is a blend of 75% Semillon and 25% Sauvignon Blanc that was picked on the gravelly soil ...Read More »
