Had K&L co-owner and main wine buyer Clyde Beffa Jr. not read an article about the gentlemanly hobby of wine collecting in the February 1971 issue of Playboy, he might still be weighing the merits of Holsteins versus Jerseys instead of Château Margaux or Haut-Bailly. Beffa owned a dairy in Tracy, California, from 1967-1973, leaving the the business to co-found K&L Liquors, as it was known back then, in 1976. Clyde started traveling to Europe in 1982 and over the years, he has worked hard to build K&L into one of the nation's go-to sources for the world's diverse wines, developing relationships with winemakers and châteaux owners the world over. Clyde's passion is surely Bordeaux, especially the fabulous wines from Pauillac and St-Julien (like Pichon-Lalande and Léoville-Barton). When he's not drinking France's legendary reds, you'll likely find Clyde indulging in Sauvignon Blanc. A fan of Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé and white Bordeaux, he'll also tuck into a bottle of Kiwi Sauv Blanc if there's no corkscrew around. These days you'll likely find Clyde extolling the virtues of underrated Bordeaux vintages like 1991, 1997, 1999, 2004 and 2006, or playing with his German Shepherd Sadie. Or you may see him in his vegetable garden and, once in a great while, on the golf course.

2005 Lanessan, Haut-Médoc
Review Date: 6-22-2009
One of my favorite Haut-Médoc properties since I first tasted the 1959 and 1961 in 1971. Fine balance and tons of latent fruit that is covered by some tannin - open two hours and let it breathe. Plenty of red fruit flavors.

2006 Le Fer, St-Emilion (was $29.99)
Review Date: 6-22-2009
Right next to Angélus, so terroir is terrific. Substantial, old school wine. Black fruit - big shoulders; aromas of toast and tobacco. A bit tight but airing helps a lot.

1999 Haut-Bailly, Pessac Léognan
Review Date: 5-4-2009
One of my favorite Châteaux and a great wine. Very aromatic, Graves-style wine with earthy and mineral hints on the nose. Crushed berries on the nose and palate. This is a very elegant yet powerful wine, and quite long on the palate with good grip.

1997 Langoa-Barton, St-Julien
Review Date: 5-4-2009
This wine is PERFECT right now—mature and delicious Bordeaux at a great price. We sold the last 50 cases immediately and now we have our last 50 to sell. Anthony Barton ends up the hero once again both for his super wines as well as his insistence on reasonable pricing and the impact he’s had on the topic of value.

1987 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac (1.5L)
Review Date: 5-4-2009
The turning point vintage for Pichon-Baron. Elegant and well-balanced, with ripe currant, bell pepper, spice and vanilla notes. Complex and well-proportioned, with a touch of tobacco; this has more flavor than most from this vintage.
Price: $149.99
2005 Pedesclaux, Pauillac (was $49.99)
Review Date: 3-30-2009
Here is one for the cellar. Try this against Mouton 2005 in 10 years. This perennial underachiever has finally achieved!. Rich and round. My barrel notes-. "A blend of 50% cabernet sauvignon, 45% merlot and 5% cabernet franc. The best I have ever had from Pedesclaux. Perfect balance and sweet palate impression. Slightly New World but together and delicious. Great cellar candidate. Finally a great Pedesclaux!"

2006 Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc
Review Date: 2-18-2009
This Bordeaux is by far one of the greatest values in the history of Bordeaux. A fabulous wine in all respects. K&L's notes - 50% cabernet sauvignon, 42% merlot, 8% petit verdot. At Joanne-boysenberry nose with spice. Full bodied. Harmonious. Good sweet finish. Lovely wine-better than 2005. At UGC-elegant style. Complete and round. At the property-cinnamon spice and some clove hints. Very fine aromas that lead to the palate. Long and deep on palate. High acid, delicious. A sure "sleeper of the vintage" and much better than their 2005!

2005 de l'Estang, Cotes de Castillon (was $19.99)
Review Date: 2-18-2009
We were able to convince the owner Jean Michel Ferrandez and his negociant to give us some cases of a special batch he had and we named it "Clos Kalinda Cuvee" Well here it is. And at a great price for such a pedigree. This property is a 26 hectare (53 acres) piece planted on rolling hills in Saint Genes de Castillon at a density of 5000 vines per hectare (lots of vines in small area). The vineyard is planted 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc with the average vine age of 35 years. There is a strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery -only 36 hectoliters per hectare (they are allowed 50). In 2005 the harvest started on October 1st and the wine was aged in 30% new and 30% one-year old barrels. And only 13.6% alcohol which is on lower level of the right bank Merlot wines from 2005. Air France has bought some of this wine to serve on their business class flights. We love the vibrant style of this wine. Deep color and blackberry aromas with a touch of cassis. The tannins are round and the wine has great acidity.

2005 Benjamin de Sansonnet, St-Emilion
Review Date: 1-20-2009
This is Ch. Sansonnet's second wine (in France, Lasalle). Tremendous concentration and depth with layers of black fruit and rich, dark chocolate plus mouthfilling structure and a fine, long finish. Buy enough to stock your cellar. 92 points from me.

2005 Clos Kalinda, St-Emilion
Review Date: 1-20-2009
I loved 2005 Ch. Sansonnet, a fine St-Emilion property, and I was thrilled to be offered their second wine (in France, Lasalle) as a base for our Clos Kalinda, which also has some Sansonnet blended in. The expressive bouquet offers a succession of cherry, cinnamon and fine toasted oak. On the palate, the flavor is at the same time fruity and woody. Supple in the mouth, fine chewy tannins, flavors of black fruit, and a very good finish. Like almost all of the 2005 Bordeaux, this wine should be decanted if you are drinking it now. Wonderful with prime-rib dinner.

2001 Marbuzet, St-Estèphe
Review Date: 1-20-2009
We tasted the 2001 at Fete de Bordeaux 2008 in January and were duly impressed. The wine, like so many fine 2001s, was elegant and refined. Packed with ripe fruit and a lingering finish. Give it a try! I have recently this month tasted this wine three times and it was spot on everytime. Just simply delicious. I even served it at a wedding to california cab lovers and all commented positively about it.
