2011 Barnett Vineyards Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 10-16-2014
The 2011 Barnett Spring Mountain Cabernet is a solid effort for the vintage! It is a focused, balanced and study wine that shows a ton of complexity and minerality. Plenty of fruit fills out the mid-palate while the tannins give the finish a good grip and structure. A Cab drinker's Cab and a great buy for under $40!

Exotic, spicy and ripe aromas jump from the glass. The mouthfeel is lush, explosive and layered. The finish is spicy, silky and long. This is flat-out delicious Pinot Noir!

2013 Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 9-4-2014
Pretty floral fruit, spicy, red currants, focused and balanced, fresh, tannins are integrated and firm--will be a wine to buy if price is right. 89-91 points.

2013 Calon Ségur, St-Estèphe Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 8-4-2014
A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2013 Calon Segur shows aromas and flavors of coffee, black tea, red cherries and dried tobacco leaf. This is a rustic style wine in every vintage, but I do find the 2013 to have plenty of fruit to carry through to the finish. Tannins are firm and sturdy. 89-91 points.

2011 La Jota Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2011 La Jota Howell Mountain Cabernet is a super effort! In a vintage like 2011, if a winemaker tries to do too much with the wine in the cellars, the wine will come out rough, unbalanced and green. The 2011 La Jota was created with a light hand. It shows tons of spicy red currant fruit, minerals and cedar hints. There is a wonderful freshness that explodes from the glass! This is an earlier drinking wine that shows great right now with some air.

2012 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien (1.5L) Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 7-17-2014
The 2012 Barton shows classic Léoville-Barton color and flavor profile. Dark, with almost black fruits, the 2012 has a purity of fruit that I like, along with an almost velvety mid-palate. Tannins are definitely present and the wine shows a firm structure, which leads me to believe this will be a good wine to cellar for the mid- to longer-term for the vintage.

2012 Beaux Frères Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
Review Date: 7-14-2014
This blew me away! Never light in style, the 2012 is about as full and opulent as you can get from Oregon without being clumsy and disjointed. Despite its size and power, this wine has wonderful perfume and freshness, as well as length. I would love to hold a few bottles of this for five years or so to see how it rounds out.

The 2012 Beringer Knights Valley Cab is an great example of the quality to come with the 2012 vintage in California. Upfront the wine smells like classic California Cab; hints of toasty oak, plum, black licorice and cocoa powder. The tannins are present but integrated and sweet, while the finish is long and lingering. Excellent, straightforward Cabernet that will not disappoint!

2011 Rosenblum Contra Costa County Zinfandel
Review Date: 6-27-2014
Normally $15 and over, this wine is a steal for under $10! The 2011 Contra Costa Zinfandel is almost black in color, with aromas of smoked meats and dried, black fruits. The flavors explode from the glass but are not over the top; helped by the cooler 2011 vintage I am sure. Best paired with big meat dishes, this is perfect summertime BBQ wine!

2012 Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc (1.5L) Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 6-24-2014
One of the pleasant surprises this vintage! Cantemerle is on a roll with their recent wines, and the 2012 is no exception. It shows pleasant, upfront fleshy fruit that is focused and clean. Tannins are integrated and ripe, with just a touch of spice and cedar hints that linger on the finish. This wine should show well upon release and develop well in a cellar for 10 years after bottling.

2013 Margerum Wine Company "K&L Blend" Happy Canyon Sauvignon Blanc
Review Date: 5-20-2014
Wow! This wine came out fantastic! We blended this wine back in early February with Doug at the winery. We had 6 lots to taste. We ended up choosing a blend of 3 of the lots. The wine is a great example of what kind of Sauvignon Blanc can be grown in California. While still having a tropical fruit element upfront, the acidity is what keeps this wine together and focused. It is rich, fruity and loaded with citrus on the backend. Although a great wine for summertime sipping, it shows so much complexity and richness, that this wine would even be better paired with food.

2013 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 5-14-2014
This wine has a crazy nose. My first thought was a young J. Swan Zinfandel - that is how ripe this wine was in the nose. In the mouth it calms down a bit, revealing its Cabernet backbone and displaying surprising freshness and acidity. This is a very interesting wine that should drink well young. 91-93 points.
