2010 Galardi "Terra di Lavoro" Roccamonfina

This wine is not for the faint at heart. When I first popped the bottle, the wine was so full of game, wild herbs, ferrous notes,smoke and earth, it was almost pungent on the nose. I came back to it a few hours later and the nose had changed to show more chocolate, black licorice, and molasses, while still maintaining the game and spice notes. It was not until the next day when I enjoyed a glass with lunch that the blackberry and cherry liquor started to pop out. I tasted it this morning after being open for three days and it had developed even more, showing dried flowers, strawberry jam and a hint of cloth. So an incredibly complex wine to say the least. Will blow you away (in the best sense of the term)if you drink it now. Just make sure to decant it at least an hour before serving it. Better yet, sit on it for 5 to 10 years and you'll be even more blown away. One of the most intriguing wines I've ever experienced from Southern Italy. Wow! CM

2011 Correggia Anthos Dry Brachetto

I'm a sucker for these types of red wines. Highly floral, spicy, lighter bodied. They're unusual, to say the least, but can be so much fun when you open your mind to them. I had this with some spicy fish tacos one night and finished the bottle with a pasta primavera of sorts the next day for lunch and it rocked with both. In fact, this wine sort of needs food to really make it sing. I'd love to pair it with some high quality salumi, or Piemonte style carne crudo. Fun little wine for only 17 bones. Love it. CM

2011 Poderi Morini "Savignone" Savignon Rosso

One of the coolest wines I've come across in a long time. I opened it for the staff and they unanimously fell heads over heels for it as well (usually even if most of the staff loves a wine, there's still at least one "meh", but not this time!) Medium bodied, with zesty red raspberry, dried cherry and a ton of black pepper, rose petal, clove and exotic spice. Good concentration, but with a lively acidity that makes the wine thirst quenching and a natural to pair with a wide variety of foods. Savignon Rosso is an extremely rare grape from the far west of Romagna, near Ravenna on the Adriatic coast (it of course has nothing in common with Sauvignon or Cab Sauv). It is also called "Centesimino", which means "cheapskate", which was the nickname of the farmer who cultivated it back from the verge of extinction. Just for fun, "centesimo" is the old expression for 1/100th of a lira, and if you remember, there were about 2000 lira to the dollar by the time the Euro came around, so to be a "centesimino" or a "little 1/100th of a lira" was to be one heck of a cheapskate indeed. Gotta love Italy!

2012 Giuliano Pecorino Terre di Chieti

Pecorino is a delicious white wine from the east coast of Central Italy. It reminds me a lot of Viognier (peach blossom, apricot and yellow plum aromas) but with much more acidity and crispness on the palate. This wine would be perfect to sip well chilled on it's own as the days get progressivly warmer or with some light fare like salads, white fish, or lighter preparations of chicken (or, as would be fitting, some Pecorino cheese!). Lovely little bottle of wine and highly reccomend you check it out. CM

2009 Vigne del Malina Chardonnay Friuli Grave

The wines of Vigna del Malina are, for me, quintessential expressions of Friuli Grave terroir. The Grave area is a large flat expanse spreading from roughly the border with the Veneto to the Giulian Alps in the north and the mountains that form the border with Slovenia in the east. Unfortunately this is where much of the mass produced, much less exciting Friulian wine comes from, but in the hands of the right person, they can be some of the most intriguing wines of the entire region. And this is a huge statement as Friulian whites are some of the most intellectual wines in the world. It was Friulian white wine making in the early 70’s that really kick started the modern wine revolution in Italy we’re still witnessing today, and they somehow just keep getting better. Friuli lacks the breathtaking beauty of, say, the Alto Adige or the Amalfi Coast, and is not as painfully romantic as, say, the countryside around Montalcino, but it is without a doubt one of my favorite regions in all of Italy (the food can rival Piemonte). Anyway, this Chardonnay is absolutely delicious. Lots of bruised yellow delicious apple, slight under ripe pear, quince and honeycomb but reticent, vervy and hugely mineral driven on both the nose and palate. It certainly doesn’t have the opulence of a California Chard or Chassagne-Montrachet, or even a more fruit driven Pouilly Fuisse, but again, while not void of a visceral appeal, it really speaks to the intellect. Precise is another word that comes to mind. Whatever, the wine is killer, and a steal at 19 bucks. Enjoy with lighter fare like Prosciutto di San Daniele and grissini or even as an aperitif. Fantastico!

2006 Sesta di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

The 2006 Sesta di Sopra Brunello Riserva is a "wow" wine. I challenge you to put your nose in a glass of this and have your brain register any other word. The extra year in wood and the hint of barrique aging (as well as an arduous selection process) have created quite a different wine than the 2006 normale. The bright cherry fruit has evolved into a more macerated cherry, black raspberry, saba like balsamic-y note, in addition to the high toned sweet spice and vanilla bean aromas. The wine explodes on the palate before settling into a rich, structured wine that coats every nook and cranny of your palate. The tannins are prevalent but ripe and in harmony with the fruit, alcohol and underlying acid. At first impression, I thought this wine was going to need sufficient time in the cellar to come together perfectly, but the more I go back to it, the more I'm thinking this wine is going to be utterly delicious and nearing it's peak (where I'm sure it will cruise for a decade or more) in the next two to three years. Miniscule amounts made so do yourself a favor and jump on a bottle of two right away, to be sure not to miss it. CM

2007 La Lecciaia "Manapetra" Brunello di Montalcino

This is a lovley offering from the 2007 vintage in Montalcino. Pretty bright cherry, cherry pipe tobacco, licorice, exotic spice, a hint of game and a little bit of a woodsy note on the nose make it a very intriguing wine from the get go. On the palate the wine is not as dense as one would expect from the intensity of the aromas, but what it lacks in power, it more than makes up in finesse. In fact, this is easily one of the most elegant Brunelli I've had from 2007, and almost makes me think of Burgundy. Silky tannins firm up on the finish, and the flavors linger forever. When many of the 2007 Brunelli shout, this one sings. Lovely wine, and a great value to boot.

2010 Selvagrossa "Muschén" Marche Rosso

We had enourmous success with the 2009 vintage of this wine (we had more than a few sad faces when we informed people it was sold out), and it just may be the case that the 2010 is even better. Same blend of mostly Sangiovese, with Cab Franc and Merlot making up the remainder (60%, 30% and 10% respectively to be precise), the wine is silky, full and long on the palate, with gobs of pretty cherry, spicy herb and hint of chocolate and anise. A steal at $20, the wine is an unbelievable value at $14. Highly, highly recommended. CM

2010 Amantis "Goghi" Rosso Toscana

This wine is really, really good. The label is... well... let's just say this is an instance where the old adige "it's all about what's in the bottle" is a very important thing to keep in mind. I'd love to hear the back story of it's inception; my guess is either someone lost a bet or it has something to do with a hallucinogenic drug trip. Anyway, the wine itself is incredibly pretty. Gobs of sweet cherry, sweet tobacco, spice, sweet herbs and a hint of menthol, it's full and voluptious but also has a nice vervy feel that keeps it from being heavy and dull. Lovely length and well stuctured tannins, this would be awesome with some mid wieght chicken, pork or pasta dishes, or really, even on it's own. It will certainly open up with some air, so I recommend decanting it. Also, that way, no one sees the bottle. CM

2005 Ferrero Brunello di Montalcino

I popped a bottle of this the other night after not having it for over a year and was very pleased. Classic Montalcino fruit in an opulent yet restrained style, this is dollar for dollar one of my favorite Brunelli from the 2005 vintage. Not much left so grab a couple for excellent near term enjoyment. CM

San Venanzio Prosecco Brut

Delicious Prosecco. I usually prefer Prosecco done in an "extra dry" style, as I feel the extra touch of sugar accentuates the inherent floral and stone fruit qualities of the grape. Many Proeseccos done in the "Brut" style are often times too "brut" and come of as a little austere, even shrill. This one nails it however. Lots of peachy, key lime and white flower aromas with zesty acidity and surprising depth and length. A deal and a steal at this price. Stock up for all your holiday bubbles sipping. CM

2010 Brancott Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough

Great little value in Kiwi SB. Not too much of the grassy, jalapeno note all too often found in NZ Sauv Blanc as this price, but more of the lime skin and sweet grapefruit. Refreshing as an aperitif or with ligher salads or finger apps. Yum yum.

The only thing that scares me more than trying to calculate how many cans of this I've consumed since that start date, which is also the point at which I discovered this insanely delicious brew, is how much Fernet Branca I drank in the decade I was in San Francisco. Deligeroy Cremant de Loire Brut

What a value! I love this wine. An excellent little sparkler for any occasion. Celebrating a wedding, an anniversary, a Tuesday, a Sunday morning, tying a shoe, boiling an egg, the sun rising yet one more time, feeling good. This wine will enhance any one of those. A fridge without a bottle of this is an unhappy fridge. Make more happy fridges!! CM

Sorelle Bronca Prosecco DOCG

The Bronca sisters knock it out of the park with this wine. I went to a Prosecco Consorzio tasting in San Francisco a few years back and dutifully tasted well over a hundred different Proseccos and this one was easily in the top five (and the least expensive of those; by half, in fact, in one instance!) This is the sole Prosecco imported by famed Italian agent Oliver McCrum, who insists the extra dry style is the only way to truly express the beautiful pear blossom and white peach inherent in the grape. I couldn't agree more Mr. McCrum, so, Mr (or Miss) Customer, please try this bottle of bubbles and experience one of the best examples of this exceptionally lovely wine, a perennial favorite of yours truly, by the way.
