Having been born in Rio de Janeiro into a very proud French/Portuguese family, and living in France and the USA for almost 25 years, gave me the best of all worlds, one very old, and another very new. I’ve always had three different perspectives on everything growing up, three different opportunities to understand the world around me and to try to make sense of it all. From Ipanema Beach, to the bluest of seas in the Côte d'Azur and Nice, to the wonderful Big Sur. Caipirinha and Feijoada, codfish and Vinho Verde, Daube and Bandol, and the always present Rosé, and…beer for those 110 degree summertime days in Rio! I always worked in the food business, in Paris, Nice and San Francisco. While working at Jules Verne in Paris, I decided to devote my career solely to wines and eventually got my Sommelier certification through the International Sommelier Guild.

2008 Pascal Bellier Cheverny Blanc
Review Date: 11-3-2009
Cheverny is an AOC divided in two. The Cour-Cheverny AOC applies only to wines based on the rare Romorantin grape, and the Cheverny AOC, which is based on the Sauvignon Blanc grape framed by a little bit of Chardonnay. This wine is a brilliant example of this AOC. On the nose it is pure Sauvignon Blanc, with aromas of citrous fruit, a touch of gooseberries and gun powder. The palate however, gives us some green apples and pears together with the citrous fruit and the dusty minerality. Very good indeed. This wine will be very good served as an aperitif, with lighter fare, or with artichokes, avocados, ceviche, egg dishes, Thai food.
Price: $12.99
Marguet Pere et Fils "Cuvee Reserve" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 11-2-2009
The word here is "elegance & muscles" with plenty of Pinot Noir fruit, balanced by the finesse of the Chardonnay. Cherries together with lemon zest, pain grillé, croissant and a very delicate note of cocoa. This is indeed Grand Cru quality, brilliantly done by a small producer, or what we call in France "Champagne de Vignerons", the pride and joy of Champagne!
Price: $36.99
2008 Domaine Begude Chardonnay "Le Bel Ange" Vin de Pays d'Oc
Review Date: 10-28-2009
The word I have in mind is "delightful". This is a non oaked Chardonnay, with its classic melon and pears aromas, but there's something else... A little secret: 15% Chenin Blanc in the blend, and that makes the Chardonnay shine even more. Crispy, fruit forward but with a definite core of minerality, true to its "terroir" of Limoux.
Price: $12.99
2007 Frédéric Mabileau "Racines" Bourgueil
Review Date: 10-21-2009
Very approacheable Cabernet Franc. Full of dark berries, plenty of minerality, earthness and a touch of wild mushrooms. Light to medium tannin profile, with I'd say would be perfect to be served cool. Try with asparagus, lightly grilled salmon, sirloin steak with wild mushroom sauce, salt cod, wiener schnitel.
Price: $19.99
2008 J. Heinrich Blaufränkisch
Review Date: 10-21-2009
Nice wine to be served cool, with flavor profile of cherries and a touch of kirsh, gentle and very easy drinking. This will be nice to serve on parties, for cocktail or with light fares.

Franck Bonville Brut Selection Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Review Date: 10-20-2009
If there is such a thing as a Champagne for everyday use, well this has to be it. Not because of the price, but for its quality and poise. Very crispy, citrousy end elegant. Perfect for hors d'oeuvres, seafood, egg dishes, guacamole, goat cheeses, and "fantastic" with caviar!
Price: $29.99
2007 Undone Pinot Noir
Review Date: 10-20-2009
I like this wine for what it is. Light, full of bright cherries, easy drinking. Usually I give it a little chill and drink it as I would a rosé. It goes very well with all kind os light fare cuisine.
Price: $10.99
2008 Domaine de Montrabech Vin de Pays d'Oc Blanc
Review Date: 10-14-2009
You can definetely notice the Muscat presence in this wine, but the white flowers and a touch of lanolin tell us there's something else... Grenache Blanc. And that's a beautiful marriage! The nose of grapes and orange flowers leads us to a perfectly dry palate, and that is the magic of this wine. Flamboyant nose and a restrained palate. Reminiscent of Alsace, besides being made hundreds of miles away to the south. Fun for an apperitif, with tapas, Mexican food, Salade Niçoise, artichokes & asparagus, Bouillabaisse.
Price: $7.99
2007 E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône Blanc
Review Date: 10-14-2009
Very pretty wine, with an aromatic nose of peaches, white flowers and quince. Lots of minerality on palate and a quite refreshing finish. I cannot think of any white wine drinker not liking this wine. It will be very nice with curry dishes, creamy pastas dishes, mushroom risotto, crabs, creamy cheeses, roast pork, scallops.
Price: $11.99
1989 Georges Brunet "Vieilles Vigne" Vouvray Demi-Sec
Review Date: 10-13-2009
I was stunned by this wine. A marvelous nose of honey, honeycomb, jasmine blossom, crushed stones, plenty of spices that is echoed by the palate, all with a very balanced acidity. The demi-sec gives you sweetness on the front palate but ends it on a dry note and a very long honeyed finish. A mature wine indeed. A plate of aged goat cheese will pair wonderfully with it. Also some serious Chinese or Thai food, rilletes, chestnut-based desserts.
Price: $37.99
2008 Château de Montfaucon "Comtesse Madeleine" Côtes du Rhône Blanc
Review Date: 10-12-2009
Very classic white Rhone. White flowers, honeyed but dry and with a rich palate. I would say this wine will age beautifully for a couple more years. Try this on your next Thanksgiving supper, it will be perfect with the candied sweet potatoes and Turkey! Also, Choucroute Garni, Crabs, curry and coconut-based dishes.
Price: $15.99
2007 Domaine de Fondrèche "Persia" Côtes du Ventoux
Review Date: 10-12-2009
I poured this wine at our last Rhone tasting and it was stunning. Quite surprising for the customers that have heard of Ventoux but not of this producer. It is basically an elegant Syrah, more reminiscente of the northern Rhone than Ventoux. The 10% Mourvedre lends a great touch of spiciness, and all that with a nice frame of fruit and coffee beans. Very elegant indeed.
Price: $26.99
2008 Paco & Lola Albariño Rias Baixas
Review Date: 10-6-2009
For me there are 2 kinds of Albarino wine. The nondescript one, which is a light wine with a slight bitter finish, and a upper tier one - with abundant peaches and nectarines, also a light wine, but with a crispness along a more complex character. Paco & Lola belongs to the second group. This is an Albarino that just charms you. A nose of grapefruit, peaches, and even a hint of pineapple, and a delightful and ever so slight fizz impression on the palate. Simply delicious. You have to get past the polka dotted label though. Have it with anything seafood!
Price: $14.99
2006 Chante Cigale Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Review Date: 10-5-2009
I know that the 2007 vintage in the Rhone is all the rage these days, and rightly so. However some of the 2006 Chateauneufs are drinking really well right now. The Chante Cigale is an example of this. With a dark plum color, and a fruit profile of cherries, plums, and cassis. All framed by intense spiciness and minerality. Very approachable and pleasing right now.

2008 Domaine des Aubuisieres "Cuvee Silex" Vouvray
Review Date: 10-5-2009
Exactly what one expects from a Vouvray and more! Classic Vouvray in a "Tendre" style(something in between totally Dry and Off Dry). Beautiful nose of quince, lemon curd, honeysuckle. Definetely honeyed but with a just ever so slightly sweetness on the palate. This will be delicious with anything with Bernaise, Hollandaise or sweet and sour sauces, goat cheese, quiches and souffles, Indian food, lemon chicken, fruit salads, chestnut or lemon-based desserts.
Price: $15.99
2008 Pascal et Nicolas Reverdy "Les Coutes" Sancerre
Review Date: 10-5-2009
This is the kind of Sancerre that if you open a bottle, someone on the other side of the room could tell. It is intense! With a mixture of crushed stones and spices, musk melon, grapefruit, habanero pepper and iodine. Pair it with guacamole and chips, Creole and Teriaki chicken, omelettes, fishcakes, sashimi and sushi, Wiener Schnitzel, Taramasalata, white fish with Hollandaise or mustard sauce.
Price: $21.99
2008 Wildhurst "Reserve" Lake County Sauvignon Blanc
Review Date: 10-5-2009
I thought this wine was delightfuly crispy, refreshing and full of citrous fruit. Perfect for cocktail parties, an aperitive before dinner or lunch outside by the pool.
Price: $8.99
2004 Bodegas Viyuela Crianza Ribera Del Duero
Review Date: 10-3-2009
This wine is simply delicious! Deep inky color, loads of dried figs and chocolate, and a meaty, almost roast-beef note. All of that with a mushroom and forest floor frame, and great acidity, just to tell us this is Spain! Try with Merguez or Chorizo sausages, roast pork, lamb, beef potpie, moussaka, salt cod fritters, squid.
Price: $19.99

2008 Châteaux de Rieux "Riussanelle" Minervois
Review Date: 10-3-2009
Incredible inky color with a nose of ripe blueberries/blackberries (and yes...grapes!), and a touch of white pepper. Medium body, with light tannins, and quite dry on the palate despite its fruity nose. There is an elegance and easiness that is quite appealing. This wine will go very well with all kinds of pizzas, quiches, hamburgers, sausages (anything grilled really...), lamb chops, veal dishes and assorted Mediterranean dishes.
Price: $14.99
2007 Vincent Paris Saint-Joseph
Review Date: 10-3-2009
A great example of Saint Joseph. Beautiful inky color. Very exciting nose of sweet espresso beans, white pepper and Asian spices. Also, blood oranges, cassis and blueberry. All that fruit however, is framed by an almost savory meaty component and mineraly hot asphalt. I had it cool, as with all red wines that I drink, cellar temperature indeed. And I am a firm believer that's how one should drink red wine. For the pairings I would suggest: All sorts of grilled meats (NOT charded) or roasted vegetables, red meat stews or casseroles, lamb shoulder, grouse.
Price: $24.99
2007 Domaine Beaurenard Côtes du Rhône-Villages Rasteau (Was $24)
Review Date: 9-28-2009
Rich but completely approachable. Delicious nose of sweet espresso beans, brown sugar, ripe blackberries and believe it or not, oranges! But still with plenty of minerality framing all those flavors. For pairing I would suggest: Cajun-style cuisine, beef casserole, chile con carne, grilled sausages, Cassoulet, lamb w/ herbs-de-provence, hearty pasta dishes.
Price: $19.99
2006 Domaine de Madeloc Collioure Blanc
Review Date: 9-28-2009
Without a doubt one of the best surprises I had this year, and the first time I consciously tasted Grenache Gris. An intriguing nose of dried peaches and apricots, pear and quince, but also white flowers and petrol. It definitely has some richness (medium body I would say) but completely dry. For the pairings I would suggest: Smoked Salmon, Tapas, Olives, Lamb Chops, Salad Nicoise, Parellada, Mushroom Risotto, Grilled Sardines, Pipperade.
Price: $21.99
2007 Aubiniere Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie
Review Date: 9-12-2009
If you like raw oysters but never had the opportunity to try with Muscadet - you should! You know, in Sommelier school, along with Sauternes & Foie Gras, this is one of the basic "classic pairings" we learn. And it's true! L'Aubiniere 2007 is one of those Muscadets that is text-book perfect for the job. Crispy, slightly spicy, tingling and full of the oceanic presence we find in some wines grown with the sea influence. I'll say it again "perfect" with raw oysters, but also crabs, scallops, Blanquette de Veau, prawn cocktail, egg dishes such as Souffle, fishcakes, greens salad and vinegar dressing (very hard to pair!), Taramasalata, and any white fish dishes with a white wine sauce.
Price: $10.99
2007 Domaine Eugene Carrel Vin de Savoie-Jongieux (was $11.99)
Review Date: 9-9-2009
This is a very light wine, quite delicate, lemony, with a touch of stone fruit and ground pepper. Picture perfect of what I call an "alpine wine" (couldn't help but picture Edelweiss flowers in my mind). With only 11.5% this will be perfect for aperitif before a summer dinner or with light fare like Poached Oysters, pasta with clam sauce, cheese fondue, Souffle with spinach, cauliflower cheese, all manners of white fish, creamy cheeses or Raclette.
Price: $8.99
2003 Lopez de Heredia "Viña Cubillo" Crianza Rioja
Review Date: 9-9-2009
Lopez de Heredia is without a doubt one of the most traditional wineries in the whole of Spain. It represents to me the very spirit of this fascinating country. THIS is Spanish wine! Call me a purist, old fashioned, and I'll just smile and reach for the nearest bottle of Lopez de Heredia. If you are interested in Spanish wines, I urge you to visit their website. It's very comprehensible and in English. The Cubillo is kind of the "entry level" for Lopez de Heredia, but far from being just a simple wine. This is very velvety, almost reminding me of a Burgundy, with dried cherries, currant sauce and an elegant touch of tabacco. I can imagine how delicious this wine would be with Roasted Pork with currants.
Price: $24.99
1981 Lopez de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" Blanco Gran Reserva Rioja
Review Date: 9-9-2009
Lopez de Heredia is without a doubt one of the most traditional wineries in the whole of Spain. It represents to me the very spirit of this fascinating country. THIS is Spanish wine! Call me a purist, old fashioned, and I'll just smile and reach for the nearest bottle of Lopez de Heredia. If you are interested in Spanish wines, I urge you to visit their website. It's very comprehensible and in English. For me to describe this wine to you, I have to quote them: "To talk in our bodega of white wines being exclusively young and uncomplicated, would be asking for trouble" - Indeed! The 1981 is of course, much deeper and more profound than the Gravonia 1999. Absolutely stunning for those into a perfectly aged white wine and still so fresh besides its age. Intensely honeyed with lanolin, walnuts and dried flowers. A classic pairing with octopus and garlic, Paella, spicy sausages, all sorts of Salt Cod recipes, tapas and even Risotto (specially a seafood one).
Price: $89.99
2005 Viña Ijalba Graciano Rioja
Review Date: 9-9-2009
First time I ever tasted this producer. Incredible deep ruby color perhaps due to the fact that the Graciano is actually a red flesh grape. With a deep cherry profile and an intriguing ripe blueberry finish. Easy drinking but not a light simple wine, rather, it has a lot of complexity and poise. Pair it with Spanish Cocido, Chorizo and tortilla de patata, all kinds of Iberian pork embutidos and of course Cochinillo Asado!
Price: $18.99
2007 Couly Dutheil "Baronnie Madeleine" Chinon
Review Date: 9-5-2009
That's the Loire Valley enchanting us once more, in style... Chinon! Very approachable and with none of those extremely austere green characteristics we sometimes find in Cabernet Franc. Instead what you will find it is a wine that's quintessential Chinon. Coffee beans, just a touch of green pepper, delicate tannins and indeed light. To be served cool, no matter what the waiter says if you BYO this bottle to a restaurant (just tell them that Jacques from K&L said so. That should suffice...). Use this wine to go with charcuterie, baked ham, asparagus, salmon, melon and Parma ham, stuffed cabbage, Escargots a la Bourguignonne, Pot-au-feu.
Price: $17.99
2007 Domaine des Ballandors Quincy
Review Date: 9-5-2009
Have you ever heard of Quincy? Along with Sancerre, Pouilly Fume, Menetou-Salon, Reuilly, Cheverny (NOT Cour-Cheverny where the rare Romorantin is grown), they are all appellations which base their white wine on the Sauvignon Blanc grape. They are in what we call the "Central Vineyards" of the Loire Valley - Not that far from Burgundy if you look at the map. Sancerre and Pouilly Fume being the most famous, and rightly so, but if you are in search of a more affordable Sauvignon Blanc, or just curious about these other villages, this is a great bottle to start. It's all about the producer and the vintage in these smaller appellations, and Ballandors really delivers it. A quintessential French Sauvignon, with plenty of dusty minerality, what we call in France "pierre a fusil" or "gun powder" or as I say in my own way: crushed marble stone (funny isn't it?). With also a very delicate nectarine presence. I can see people mistaking it for Chablis or vice-verse. This will be a delight with Fishcakes, Sashimi and Sushi, artichokes, asparagus, avocados, Ceviche, egg dishes, souffles and quiches or a bella Pasta Primavera.

2007 Franck Millet Sancerre Rouge
Review Date: 9-5-2009
- Oh what a neat wine! Delicate Pinot Noir full of delightful bright cherries, and quite flowery. Not for those wanting power and muscles, but for someone who is looking for a red wine to go with a more lighter fare for this is a light wine, to be served cool (even though it's red) as an aperitif in a warm Summer evening, brought to a picnic, or to accompany salmon, tuna steaks, all kinds of charcuterie, baked ham, quail, potato salads, grilled vegetables, chicken salad, and even strawberry or raspberry desserts.
Price: $16.99
1999 Lopez de Heredia "Viña Gravonia" Crianza Blanco Rioja
Review Date: 9-5-2009
Lopez de Heredia is without a doubt one of the most traditional wineries in the whole of Spain. It represents to me the very spirit of this fascinating country. THIS is Spanish wine! Call me a purist, old fashioned, and I'll just smile and reach for the nearest bottle of Lopez de Heredia. If you are interested in Spanish wines, I urge you to visit their website. It's very comprehensible and in English. Gravonia vineyards are planted with 100% Viura and they practice organic viticulture (although not yet certified - I'm not sure about the Spanish laws in this regard, but being part of the EU, it must be as tough as in France). For me to describe this wine to you, I have to quote them: "To talk in our bodega of white wines being exclusively young and uncomplicated, would be asking for trouble" - Indeed! This is anything but "uncomplicated" and yet completely approachable. A pale golden color, with a bouquet of honey, beeswax, Jasmin, rich lanolin on the palate with plenty of spices, almonds, and a touch of walnuts and rancio. A classic pairing with octopus and garlic, Paella, spicy sausages, all sorts of Salt Cod recipes, tapas and even Risotto (specially a seafood one).
Price: $24.99
1999 Lopez de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" Reserva Rioja
Review Date: 9-5-2009
Lopez de Heredia is without a doubt one of the most traditional wineries in the whole of Spain. It represents to me the very spirit of this fascinating country. THIS is Spanish wine! Call me a purist, old fashioned, and I'll just smile and reach for the nearest bottle of Lopez de Heredia. If you are interested in Spanish wines, I urge you to visit their website. It's very comprehensible and in English. Now, about his specific bottle: It has a definitely developed character. Deep garnet color, intense red fruit surrounded with a very seductive muskiness, tobacco, and still delicate besides the power behind it. To be enjoyed with a variety of lamb dishes, Greek food, specially Moussaka, Merguez sausage and all manners of roasted pork.

2004 Martin Schaetzel "Cuvée Isabelle" Gewürztraminer
Review Date: 9-5-2009
It's a well known fact at K&L LA, that I absolutely adore Alsace, the place, the cuisine, the people and its wines. It baffles me that people don't get to try them more often. This one is a classic. What a Gewurztraminer should be, in Alsace or elsewhere. Winemakers take note! A beautiful deep golden color that just plain seduces you at the very first glance. Followed by what could be one of the best Gewurztraminers I had in a long while. Pure honey and roses, with plenty of classic lanolin. So floral, so intense, but so well balanced by the surprising acidity for being a late harvest Gewurztraminer. Sure it has sweetness, but it is far from being cloying . A glass of this with roasted Pork and Red Cabbage with Apples would be the ultimate Alsace experience! Also, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Duck a l'Orange, Indian food, Lamb Curry and Curried Tomato soup, Thai food, brown sugar-based desserts, Birewecks (custard tart made with dried fruit that has been marinated in kirsch), Tarte Alsacienne (custard tart with local fruits such as quetsches plums), Pain d'épices ("spice-bread")
Price: $24.99
2007 Martin Schaetzel Pinot Blanc Reserve
Review Date: 9-5-2009
It's a well known fact at K&L LA, that I absolutely adore Alsace, the place, the cuisine, the people and its wines. It baffles me that people don't get to try them more often. This Pinot Blanc was very surprising for me. I was expecting just a little white wine that it's common with this grape. Oh what a surprise did I have at the staff tasting! Lots of candied warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, almost custardy, and vanilla creme brulee with an explosion of cloves in the finish. Intriguing isn't it? But don't be intimidated by my description, it's really quite balanced and delicate. Imagine how good this would be with a Choucroute Garni, Eggs Benedict, Cheese Omelette, Flammeküche (light pastry filled with cream, onions, cheese, mushrooms and bacon), Onion Tart (Zweibelküche in Alsacien), Pain d'épices ("spice-bread"), Quiche Lorraine, Veal dishes, Raclette.
Price: $13.99
2008 Pascal Janvier Jasnières
Review Date: 9-5-2009
Oh Jasnieres... the name alone is like poetry to me. I have to say that in some cold years when the weather in this northern, and marginal portion of the Loire, doesn't allow the grapes to ripen properly, the acidity of its wines can be such that makes drinking it an effort best enjoyed only if you are eating rilletes on the shadows of a grand Chateau. However, on a warm year, its wines are pure pleasure! This one is all honeyed with oranges and quince spiked with cinnamon . All held in a delicate check by its very balanced acidity. Sure I wouldn't dismiss the Chateau and the rillettes, but my point is - you don't need them... Try with goat cheese, sweet and Sour sauce, Moules Marinieres, Salmon with Beurre Blanc, Lemon Chicken, Trout in light Cream Sauce, Indian food, fruit salads, chestnut-based desserts.

2008 Château Viranel "Tradition" Saint Chinian Rosé
Review Date: 9-2-2009
One of my favorite Roses of this season for sure. I find it full of flavor, some richness, dry but not austere and just a pleasure to drink really. The flavor profile I'll concur with my coleagues' reviews. For the pairings, besides those suggested above I would add a Salt Cod with garlic and Roasted Potatoes, Sweet and Sour Chiken, Seafood Pizza, and a Grilled Polenta with Garlic Shrimp and Rosemary. All of which I had the pleasure to enjoy with this very same wine.
Price: $12.99
2005 Corte Rugolin Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso
Review Date: 9-2-2009
I tend to recommend this wine for people that have had Amarone in the past, loved it, but want something more affordable. Sure, this is no Amarone, however it does give you "some" of its richness and flavor profile. A quintessential Italian wine for me to have with a Lasagna a Bolognese, Saltimboca alla Romana, Risotto alla Parmigiana, Provolone, Bel Paese, or just a juicy Spaghetti with meat sauce... Lot's of Parmesan cheese!
Price: $19.99
2006 Jean-Marc Burgaud Morgon Côte du Py Reserve
Review Date: 9-2-2009
This is a Beaujolais for those that find Beaujolais too tutty-fruitty bubble-gummy. It is absolutely not any of these things. In fact, its aromas and palate are much more reminiscent of a Cote-de-Nuits. It is all about Morgon and its best cru (and perhaps in the whole of Beaujolais)... "Cote du Py". A bottle of this wine will "make music" with a Beef Bourguignon, Potpies, Grilled Sausages, Charcuterie, Chicken Chasseur and oh yes... Coq-au-Vin!

2005 Bailly de Camensac, Médoc
Review Date: 9-1-2009
This is the kind of wine that is just so pleasing, gentle and approachable, it's just perfect for a quiet night in with good food and good friends. Bright red fruit on the nose with a touch of nutmeg followed by a very easygoing palate that will pair wonderfully with a Roast beef, meat Fondue, Southern style Fried Chicken, Shepherd's Pie, Couscous, Meat Loaf, Grilled Sausages and all the like.

2001 Domaine Valette Pouilly-Fuissé "Clos Reyssie Reserve Particuliere" ($78 Elsewhere)
Review Date: 8-30-2009
While I do agree that this is not a wine for the uninitiated, it does reveal itself for the people in the know. An incredible nose of a warm toast that has just been buttered, butterscotch and exotic spices. Didn't find a lot of fruit, but then again I wasn't looking for or expecting it. Thoroughly enjoyed it. That would be very nice with Smoked Salmon, Blackened fish, Grilled Bass,or even a simple Croque Monsieur.
Price: $39.99
2008 Lioco Sonoma Chardonnay
Review Date: 8-24-2009
As crisp and delicious as the 2007 vintage, but even better, perhaps due to more richness and a touch of tropical fruit that place you square in a lush Caribbean island, but still UNOAKED and definitely delivering what California is capable of doing without the "Oak-Overload" we so often see.
Price: $19.99
2008 Domaine Quenard Vin de Savoie-Chignin
Review Date: 8-17-2009
If you have ever vacationed on the ski slopes of the French Alps, you'd know that besides hot cocoa with Cognac there is a lot of crispy, refreshing white wine around. This Savoie is a perfect example of that, and it's also delicious! The grape here is Jacquere, and somehow it reminds me of a Grüner of sorts. 11.5% alcohol and full of apricots and spices, it is just the wine I would search for a hot summer day or just to have it with a cheese fondue, crabs or raclette.

2008 Image du Sud Viognier Vin de Pays Méditerranée
Review Date: 8-17-2009
This is a classic example that, even if a wine is classified as a simple "Vin de Pays," done by a quality conscious winemaker, it can be marvelous! And this one is just that. A Viognier that is classic and very affordable. A beautiful nose of peaches, nectarines, and an array of delicate flowers. With only 12.5% alcohol I can honestly use the word "delicate" (God knows I have tasted 16% alcohol Viogniers, which resemble gasoline more than wine! I shall not reveal their names...). Try with fish and mango salsa, gazpacho, light curries, carrot soup, Indian food and even artichokes.

2005 Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs Sparkling Wine
Review Date: 8-17-2009
To best describe this wine to you I have to tell you a little secret... I mistook this bottle for Champagne on my sommelier test (not the final exam thank God!). Now, knowing better, I should have noticed by the ripeness of the fruit that this was no Champagne, but oh it was so delicious! Toasty and briochy, with lemon notes and also some tropical fruit and exotic spices. I definetely recommend the Schramsberg.

2007 Antech "Cuvee Eugenie" Cremant de Limoux
Review Date: 8-11-2009
Most definetely one of the best deals in bubbles outside of Champagne. With an intriguing balance between richness and delicacy, this lemony and honeyed but perfectly Brut. Pair it with any creamy fish dishes, blinis, fondue, banana-based desserts, carrot Cake, or just as an apperitif watching the sun setting over the Pacific!

2008 Domaine de Guillemarine Picpoul de Pinet
Review Date: 8-10-2009
A true blue Picpoul!! Bursting with flavor. Tangerine, orange flowers and definitely "tingling" on the lips (after all "picpoul" means lip-stinger!). This will be absolutely perfect with all seafood dishes, mild chicken curry, Chinese food, light lamb dishes, pasta with clam sauce, and let's not forget... bouillabaisse!!

2008 Domaine Begude Sauvignon Blanc Vin de Pays d'Oc

Crisp with lots of minerals, this is more reminiscent of a Sancerre (an appellation hundreds of miles to the north), but still full of elegant fruit and refreshing to the core. An absolutely "must have" for summer. I have ceviche in mind right now. Also, crabcakes, sashimi, wiener schnitzel, fish & chips or a simple tomato salad and raw vegetables and, why not, some ginger based desserts?

2007 Shenandoah Vineyards "Special Reserve" Amador Zinfandel
Review Date: 7-1-2009
Have you ever heard that Zinfandels pair very well with BBQ? Although this is true, what the adage fails to take in consideration is that usually when we are doing a BBQ it is also very hot! That's when the Shenandoah comes into play. With all the spiciness of a Zinfandel minus the heaviness and the heat. Now I am talking about a great BBQ wine! Viva Le Summer!

2008 Sherwood Pinot Noir Marlborough New Zealand
Review Date: 7-1-2009
Classic Pinot Noir from NZ. Full of ripe dark berries balanced with lots of complexity and a touch of smoke. I honestly think this is the "very" best Pinot in this price range. Think pork chops, roast chicken (with Morel mushroom sauce perhaps...), lamb curry, meatloaf, quail and potato salad, and let's not forget the Thanksgiving table!

2007 Cave de Rasteau "Dame Victoria" Côtes du Rhône-Villages Rasteau
Review Date: 6-26-2009
A perfect wine for those willing to venture into the "old world" but not still fully commited to do so. Full of dark berries and soft tannins but with plenty of the Rhone spices and elegance. A Coq-au-Vin will be delicious with it, also a Basque Chicken, Roast Duck, Turkey with traditional trimmings, Gratin Dauphinois and how about a decadent dish of Goose stuffed with prunes?

Kalinda Riesling Sekt Dry
Review Date: 6-26-2009
Germany surprises me sometimes. I grew up turning my nose up at "anything" Sekt, until I tasted this bottle on New Year's! Incredibly aromatic but dry as it can be. A bubbly to go with a Blanquette de Veau, Quiche Lorraine, Waldorf Salad, Sashimi and Sushi, Chinese food and all things raspberry.

2007 Allimant Laugner Muscat
Review Date: 6-11-2009
I have a fascination for Alsace, I have to confess. Its wines are so food friendly, approachable and charming. This Muscat embodies exactly what I like to drink. A deceiving fruity nose of fresh grapes and flowers invite you to believe this will be sweet. It's technically not. Very surprising and intriguing. For those who never had a dry Alsatian Muscat, this is the perfect opportunity to do so. Also it pairs wonderfully with the impossible to pair... Asparagus & Artichokes! Indian, Thai, and even Mexican food would go very nicely.

2007 Clos du Gravillas "Douce Providence" Muscat de Saint Jean de Minervois (500ml)
Review Date: 6-11-2009
I sometimes find some of the sweet Muscats have along with the sweetness, a bitterness, almost orange rind finish to them. That does not apply here. All pineapple and grapes, flowery and delicacy on this Gravillas. Delicious on its own as an apperitive or with any apricot, cassis, ginger, orange and pineapple desserts. Also, dried fruits, Roqueford cheese, fruit salads, sweet Crepes and merengues -
A classic with ice cream!

2006 Clos Ste-Magdeleine Cassis Blanc
Review Date: 6-1-2009
Aside from being from one of the most beautiful fishing villages in Provence (and perhaps in the whole of France), Ste. Magdeleine is the top producer in the Cassis appellation. On cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean, the salty sea mists engulf the vines every morning (one can definitely notice the unmistakable presence of the ocean on the long finish). Although it is quite muted on the nose (as are many Cassis wines), the surprise starts when one pours it in the glass. A beautiful golden color comes shining through. The palate has a crazy blend of wild herbs, honey, white flowers and, yes, salt! One of the most intriguing white wines I have ever tasted. Absolutely stunning with seafood!

1998 Domaine Fontanel Rivesaltes Ambré
Review Date: 1-12-2009
Unfortunately Rivesaltes has been a bit obscured lately by the brightness of the other dessert wines of France (Sauternes & Co), but it is so rich and complex, so full of caramel and spices and honeyed-roasted-almond flavors, that it just about blew everybody’s mind at our staff tasting. If you would like to really impress your friends with your cool finesse and knowledge of wine, pair this delicious wine, slightly chilled, at the end of your meal with some hard cheese from either Spain (this area of France was, until 1659 part of the Catalan Kingdom) or France, and just bask in your success. Plus, a wine like this means you won’t have to worry about making dessert!

2006 Domaine Ilarria Irouleguy Rouge
Review Date: 1-12-2009
You probably know by now, I LOVE the esoteric, unusual, way off the beaten path wines. And what could more represent all of that than a wine called “Irouleguy?" I love it!
This hails from the Basque country where it is drunk with strong, peppery foods. Lots of bell peppers, onions, olives, anchovies, Pipérade, Bacalao, Bayonne Ham and a variety of tapas with all of the above. I know we don’t eat like this all the time in LA, but I am sure we can be a little creative and make something deliciously flavored to have with this Irouleguy. Deep red and intense, it reminds me of pomegranate concentrate, full of polyphenols (Basque people are known for their longevity). Come on, walk on the wild side…
