Had K&L co-owner and main wine buyer Clyde Beffa Jr. not read an article about the gentlemanly hobby of wine collecting in the February 1971 issue of Playboy, he might still be weighing the merits of Holsteins versus Jerseys instead of Château Margaux or Haut-Bailly. Beffa owned a dairy in Tracy, California, from 1967-1973, leaving the the business to co-found K&L Liquors, as it was known back then, in 1976. Clyde started traveling to Europe in 1982 and over the years, he has worked hard to build K&L into one of the nation's go-to sources for the world's diverse wines, developing relationships with winemakers and châteaux owners the world over. Clyde's passion is surely Bordeaux, especially the fabulous wines from Pauillac and St-Julien (like Pichon-Lalande and Léoville-Barton). When he's not drinking France's legendary reds, you'll likely find Clyde indulging in Sauvignon Blanc. A fan of Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé and white Bordeaux, he'll also tuck into a bottle of Kiwi Sauv Blanc if there's no corkscrew around. These days you'll likely find Clyde extolling the virtues of underrated Bordeaux vintages like 1991, 1997, 1999, 2004 and 2006, or playing with his German Shepherd Sadie. Or you may see him in his vegetable garden and, once in a great while, on the golf course.

2009 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

At UGC: Big and brooding, with tons of ripe tannins, blackberry fruit and fine acidity. Very dense. At property: Pencil lead and cedar aromas. Very spicy. 1989 and 2009 are two of the best from this property. Will age forever I would think.

2009 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien
Review Date: 4-23-2013
77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22.5% Merlot, 0.5% Cabernet Franc. Probably the best I’ve tasted from Anthony and I have been tasting his wines since 1973. Tons of fruit masks the high tannin levels-will age for a very long time. 95 points!

2009 du Tertre, Margaux
Review Date: 4-15-2013
½* Good upfront fruit. Mid-palate? At UGC: Lighter in style here. Sweet and racy. Quite forward.

2009 d'Issan, Margaux
Review Date: 3-11-2013
* A very elegant wine, with forward fruit flavors. Well made.

2010 Lamothe-Bergeron, Haut-Médoc
Review Date: 2-18-2013
1/2* Hubert de Boüard is consulting at this winery, and it sure shows. It's much more modern in style than previous vintages, with tons of black fruit aromas and great structure. Semi-new wave.

2010 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 2-11-2013
** 1/2 Pontet-Canet is on a roll. Tasted three times, and each time it was perfect and sexy, with everything in harmony. Very stylish, balanced and fresh. Laser beam fruit. Lovely, open, powerful and dense without being extracted. Long and lush.

1999 Fugue de Nenin, Pomerol

The wine shows even better today than when we tried it in Bordeaux. Outstanding, sweet and fruity. Perfect right now.

2009 Poujeaux, Moulis
Review Date: 9-27-2012
*+V Lovely texture and length - a delicious wine, as usual. Balanced.

2009 Gloria, St-Julien
Review Date: 9-27-2012
½* More gritty and smoky, with integrated tannins. Quite nice.

2011 Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 5-17-2012
** 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot. Red berry aromas. Deep and complex. This elegant wine got better after some airing. A step behind 2009 and 2010, but at a better price.

2011 Latour, Pauillac (1.5L) Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 5-17-2012
**½ 84.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, .5% Petit Verdot. Only 6,000 cases produced. Black color. Asian spice, cinnamon and black pepper aromas. Sweet mid-palate with layers of fruit. A very complex, lovely wine. This may be the last year to buy this property on futures.

2009 Paloumey, Haut-Médoc

*V This property is on a roll and this 2009 is stunning--lots of blackberry aromas that follow to palate. Plenty of structure, but tastes quite good right now.

2005 Coufran, Haut-Médoc
Review Date: 8-31-2011
This is a very serious wine that has Rutherford Dust-like aromas and plenty of minerals on the nose. It's a big wine on the palate, full-bodied and tannic, but with great underlying fruit. Cellar it a bit or decant two hours.

2000 Coufran, Haut-Médoc
Review Date: 8-31-2011
Pretty aromas of crushed raspberries, cherries and blackberries. Quite sweet on the palate thanks to the Merlot. This wine is still big and rich and would age well a few years. Enjoy now with prime rib roast.

Billecart-Salmon "Brut Reserve" Champagne
Review Date: 8-9-2011
As focused as ever, almost lemony on the palate and super refreshing. It reminds me of when we sold a special Billecart "K&L Cuvée" years back.
