2010 Amici Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 5-31-2013
Proper Napa Cab. My tasting notes of this read like they were taken right out of what a Rutherford Cab is supposed to taste like; dark blue and black fruits, a dusty earthiness, cassis and sweet oak. This is a very good example of what balanced Cab tastes like, drinkable now, certainly worth drinking over the next 10 years as well.
1999 Bodegas Puelles Gran Reserva Rioja
Review Date: 5-31-2013
Perfectly mature Rioja makes me a very happy man. This wine is on the traditional side of the Rioja dividing line, it is about earth and spice, brilliant acidity and just enough mature fruit to be in balance. This is decidedly nerdy wine, it is complex, intricate, and full of nuance. A food wine to be sure, lamb, burgers, grilled things.
Absolut Elyx Single Estate Vodka 1L
Review Date: 5-23-2013
David and I taste a lot of spirits, a lot. Some are great, well crafted, thoughtful spirits that are made with passion, but those are the exceptions to the rule. There is a lot of hyped up plonk in fancy packages that cost more just because they need to portray and image. Vodka is bar far the worst offender in my book. “This is the Vodka Alexander the III drank!” “This is all the rage in the clubs right now because so and so featured it in their video.” (Or on a boat). None of these things have to do with what is actually in the bottle. The Elyx looks good, but it also has stuffing. Coming off a vintage pot still, the first thing that struck me was the creamy texture and velvety mouth feel. This Vodka is supple and mouth coating, very soft and supremely drinkable. David and I opened this right next to another Vodka to compare with this, there is more depth and weight to this, it is noticeably better than any other Vodka I have tasted recently. This falls into the category of well made, crafted Vodka, and is absolutely worth a try.
2000 Daniel Ginsburg "Cuvée Sous Bois" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 4-24-2013
This is decadent Champagne, powerful, rich, luscious, pick a synonym. The 2000 has the stuffing to stand up for those people are a fan of the richer big names, for people seeking those red fruits and power that Pinot Noir brings when combined with the texture gained from the barrel. Texturally assertive with a great mouth feel and fine bead, this Champagne freight trains through your palate in a heavenly way. One of my favorite Vintage wines Mr. Westby has brought in.
2010 Cameron Hughes "Lot #318" Atlas Peak Meritage
Review Date: 3-27-2013
Cameron Hughes comes through in a big way with this wine, rich and dark without being overly extracted. Really lovely wine for the price.
2010 Gain Bay Lake County Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 1-30-2013
What a great new wine! This Cab was tucked into a tasting of over 60 wines...thanks Brian, and really impressed me for the price. Balanced and delicious, this wine comes in at a low %13, with pretty dark fruits and a great mouth feel. Fun and affordable.
2008 Bodegas Puelles Crianza Rioja
Review Date: 12-31-2012
This is w wonderful medium bodied wine. When you are looking for a break from big extracted California wine, reach for the Puelles. Crunchy red fruit drives this wine, bright acidity and enough structure to lay day down for a bit longer as well as be enjoyed tonight.
Montechiara Prosecco DOC
Review Date: 11-29-2012
Beautifully crisp and refreshing, this is the perfect wine for parties, cocktails and just plain enjoying a very affordable bottle of bubbles. The Montechiara Prosecco is full of pears and green apples, enough richness for weight, and the perfect balance of acidity for freshness. This is great for the price.
Louis Roederer "Brut Premier" Champagne
Review Date: 11-7-2012
This is my favorite entry tier wine from a big house. The quality is a step above due to careful wine making and a touch of reserve wines in the blend to add depth and nuance to a very affordable bottle of bubbles. Taking a look at my notes going back three testing’s, the most consistent notes that came up again and again were delicate white flowers and spiced pears, these delicate flavors combine with good acidity and a finely textured mouth feel make for a bottle of wine that can be enjoyed by many.
Franck Bonville Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Review Date: 4-24-2012
Coming from one of our favorite producers here at K&L ( his Brut Selection is my perennial New Years Eve wine without fail), the Franck Bonville Extra Brut is another wonderful addition to his stellar line up. This is one of the purest, and most beautiful low dosage wines I have had the pleasure to taste. What struck me the most was the striking juxtaposition between the purity and richness of fruit, and the focus and drive you would expect from such a dry wine. There are toasty bread and spice notes, lush pear and golden apples combine with just a hint of florality. The finish is very clean, dry, and crisp, without too much intensity of acidity that you can sometimes find in an Extra Brut. The lasting impression that I took away from this bottle was the stunning purity of fruit, it tastes like amazing Chardonnay, in the end, making wine that allows such high quality fruit to show through is a noble accomplishment.
Daniel Ginsburg "Grande Reserve Sous Bois" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 2-6-2012
This wine is a treat for all Champagne drinkers. As I began my writing my tasting notes, I was struck by the balance between richness and uplifting freshness. The nose is mixed between a toasty rich notes and a wonderful zippy citrus quality that came together in a very nice balance. On the palate, core fruit, pear, ripe green apple, and a lovely mouth feel greet you on the first sip. The texture of this wine is full, but without taking away from the freshness. A lovely bead along with a very crisp and clean finish leaves a very cheery and delicious impression. As I finished my notes and got down to the business of enjoying a glass with friends, this wine integrated itself to the evening quite well. It is the perfect accompaniment to a night of company because it has both broad appeal, rich and just plain delicious, as well as enough intrigue and depth to keep more experienced Champagne drinkers more than happy.
Franck Bonville Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Review Date: 12-29-2011
The picture of elegance and class. Such pure and clean lines, a touch of citrus, a hit of minerality all delivered effortlessly on a find bead and sensuous mouth feel. One of my annual holliday favorites and sure to please any Champagne snob that might haunt your gatherings.
2006 Michel Loriot "Pinot Meunier Vieilles Vignes" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 11-30-2011
Mr. Loriot has continued to impress all of us here at K&L with his stunning Champagne. His old vine Meunier is astonishingly rich and complex but that richness is so perfectly balanced with notes of citrus and mineral that round this wine out to be somethign very special indeed. Depth, complexity and freshness all wrapped up in one beautiful glass of bubbles.
Fleury Brut Rosé Champagne
Review Date: 11-30-2011
Not just a pretty face, the Fleury Rose is the complete package. From one of my favorite producers in our DI portfolio, this Rose is stunningly good. Elegantly powerful, nuanced and pretty.
