2011 Tenute Tre Monte "Vigna Rocca" Albana id Romagna DOCG
Review Date: 12-14-2012
I love this wine. I first tasted it at VinItaly this year and was very excited to see the importer had finally gotten it here. This is one that is sort of for the geeks, as it's a little unusual. First of all, the color is light tan, like weak tea. In fact, looking at it, you'd be convinced the nose would be full of fino sherry notes from oxidation. But this is simply from color pigments in the skin. The nose, on the contrary, is full of honeycomb, fresh cut flowers, apple skin and the tiniest hint of caramel. The wine is fairly full and rich, but has nice, almost crunchy minerality with a pleasant streak of acidity to give it some bounce and keep it from being dull or heavy. Just an awesome wine that would be a blast to pair with any number of dishes as it's an incredibly versitile wine. In fact, it would be a shame to have it without food. Great price too! CM

2008 Fattoria Zerbina "Torre di Ceparano" Sangiovese di Romagana Superiore
Review Date: 12-7-2012
Fattoria Zerbina is arguably the most important estate in Emila-Romagna. I believe the wines compete with and in some cases even outshine their conterparts over the Appenine mountains in Tuscany, at least on a dollar for dollar basis. Many researchers believe the Sangiovese grape originated in the Romagna region and migrated west towards Tuscany, as oppossed to the other way around. This I can't say, I'll leave that up to the ampelographers to decide, but what I can tell you is this is one gorgeous Sangiovese, with all the pretty bright cherry with hints of forest floor and spice you'd expect from better Chianti Classicos or Vino Nobile di Montepulcianos, but less overtly tannic, with a more seemless mouthfeel. The Torre di Ceparano is a vineyard designate that is their mid tier offering, and in my book, their best overlall value. Can't recommend it highly enough. CM

2011 Blason Malvasia Friuli-Venezia-Giulia
Review Date: 12-1-2012
This might be my pick of the litter of 2011 Blason whites; it has hints of tree fruit (peach, apricot) and citrus fruits (lemon and grapefruit) on the nose, with pretty white flower aromatics. Think honeysuckle and jasmine. The wines fleshes out on the palate and shows some ripe, rich tropical fruit as well. We’ve got quite a medley going at this point, eh? The round mouthfeel, medium acidity and overall balance remind me a lot of Pinot Blanc, with more snap and less of the oily texture. Another wine from Blason that just blows me away in regards to its price to quality ratio. Lovely!!

2011 Blason Friulano Isonzo
Review Date: 11-26-2012
The 2011 Blason Friulano has classic, snappy herbal aromas that are almost Sauvignon-like. Soft and creamy on the palate, with a full, rich mouthfeel balanced by soft acidity. What a wine for the price!

2011 Fontezoppa Verdicchio di Matelica
Review Date: 9-16-2012
We were incredibly successful with the 2010 vintage of this wine, and I was quite sad to see it come to an end. However, I'm super stoked to say the 2011 is even better. Whereas the 2010 was a little softer with riper, more opulent fruit, the 2011 comes across with a more zesty, refreshing crispness, with the fruit flavors tending more towards lemon and orange zest as opposed to the more melon-y, almost tropical fruit profile of the previous vintage. More spicy herbaceousness, minerality and crunchy acidity as well. If the 2010 was worthy of a $20+ dollar price tag and an absolute steal at this price, the 2011 is even more so. CM

2011 Pascal Janvier Jasnières
Review Date: 9-12-2012
Tasted alongside the Coteaux du Loir, the vision I had was it was more or less the same wine (flavor and aromatic profile, acid stucture) but it seemed to have a thicker layer of fruit and extract covering up the mineral core, as if you were making caramel apples, and you double dipped the second one. You know, more caramel to get through till you find the apple itself. This is a gorgeous wine now, but will be even better in about a year. Just an incredible expression of the Chenin grape. CM

2011 Pascal Janvier Coteaux du Loir Blanc
Review Date: 9-12-2012
Easily one of my favorite white wines in the store. I really can't express how much I love this wine. I brought a bottle home the other night and started writing down all the things I was picking up in the nose, which, quite frankly, became an exercise in futility. There was just so much going on in this wine. Suffice to say, this is wine is INSANELY mineral driven (crushed rocks, river stones, wet pavement) with beautiful ethereal fruit (underripe peach, yellow plum, kiwi, guava) and screaming acidity, but not acidic. All this for just 16 dollars. Unbelievable. Simply cannot say enough good things about this wine. Won't last long so check it out soon. CM

2010 Selvagrossa "Muschén" Marche Rosso
Review Date: 9-12-2012
We had enourmous success with the 2009 vintage of this wine (we had more than a few sad faces when we informed people it was sold out), and it just may be the case that the 2010 is even better. Same blend of mostly Sangiovese, with Cab Franc and Merlot making up the remainder (60%, 30% and 10% respectively to be precise), the wine is silky, full and long on the palate, with gobs of pretty cherry, spicy herb and hint of chocolate and anise. A steal at $20, the wine is an unbelievable value at $14. Highly, highly recommended. CM

2010 Amantis "Goghi" Rosso Toscana
Review Date: 9-8-2012
This wine is really, really good. The label is... well... let's just say this is an instance where the old adige "it's all about what's in the bottle" is a very important thing to keep in mind. I'd love to hear the back story of it's inception; my guess is either someone lost a bet or it has something to do with a hallucinogenic drug trip. Anyway, the wine itself is incredibly pretty. Gobs of sweet cherry, sweet tobacco, spice, sweet herbs and a hint of menthol, it's full and voluptious but also has a nice vervy feel that keeps it from being heavy and dull. Lovely length and well stuctured tannins, this would be awesome with some mid wieght chicken, pork or pasta dishes, or really, even on it's own. It will certainly open up with some air, so I recommend decanting it. Also, that way, no one sees the bottle. CM

2010 Famille Perrin & Fils "Réserve" Côtes du Rhône

Great little everyday quaffer. Soft but not flabby, easy drinking and easy on the pocket book. Not for the southern Rhone purist, but perfect for that Tuesday night pizza party. CM

2007 Produttori del Barbaresco "Ovello" Barbaresco Riserva Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 4-25-2012
Yum. Straightforward pretty red fruit with an earthy, balsamico note on the nose. Medium bodied, pretty acidity, soft yet structured tannins. A bit of heat on the finish of this one but absorbed by the overall complexity. CM

2007 Produttori del Barbaresco "Montefico" Riserva Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 4-25-2012
Showing even more of the earthy, balsamico notes than the Ovello (the vineyards are right next to eachother), but with gobs of sappy red fruit. Huge tannic structure but they are ripe and silky. This will need at least 5 to 8 years to really come into it’s own, and when it does, it could ultimately be the wine of the vintage for this producer. CM

2007 Produttori del Barbaresco "Muncagota" Riserva Pre-Arrival

Has that intense cherry medicine/saccharine nose often found in Barbaresco. Super fruit forward, plush, with ripe but grippy tannins. Little bit of heat on the finish of this wine but utterly lovely. CM

Wow. Prettiest nose thus far. Lovely bright cherry fruit, pretty spice aromatics. Lush and silky on the palate. Generous now, but has the stuffing to last.

2007 Produttori del Barbaresco "Asili" Barbaresco Riserva Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 4-25-2012
Intense, powerful fruit on the nose. Makes me think of the Margaux analogy of an “iron fist in a velvet glove”. Dense, chewy, wound up. Incredible wine, probably my favorite of the 2007’s.
