Staff Favorites - Doug Burress

Doug Burress
After many years of shopping at K & L, I finally decided to spend even more time at my favorite store! I first came on board at "the shop" a little over a year ago working Friday nights and Saturdays. Now, as a full time member of the Redwood City staff, my wine education continues five days a week! My favorite wines in the world include the awesome grower-producer champagnes we carry, earthy pinot noir from the Burgundy region of France, as well as the excellent pinots from Oregon and California. I dream of one day having my own land on the Dundee Hills of Oregon and producing terrior driven pinot noirs! Most recently I have dedicated more time to tasting and studying wines from Italy. It is a complicated wine country with many grape varietals, regions, and laws, but one that produces some of the best wines in the world! This education is most certainly worth the effort! I have always been a big fan of beer and the large selection of beers we carry from all over the world is yet another reason I am excited to be working here and helping you choose from our super selection of brews! I look forward to tasting and learning more about our wonderful world of wines and helping you find the right wine, at the right price, for any occasion. From a Sunday barbeque with family and friends, to that special bottle for a birthday, anniversary, or other occasion, we can help you find it here at the shop!

2009 Giscours, Margaux
Review Date: 4-15-2013
*½ At UGC: Subdued nose, but fine structure on the palate. Very rounded tannins and a good finish. Reserved right now. Will need some time.

2012 Skouras "Zoe" Rosé Peloponnese
Review Date: 4-15-2013
This was such a joy to drink. It has a deep color and is such a pretty wine to smell. It has bright lively aromas that are so inviting. In the mouth the Zoe is full bodied and juicy, but ends nice and dry. It drinks well alone but will go well with fish or fowl.

2008 Three Rings Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia   | Public Pending Approval
Review Date: 4-14-2013
We love our California red wines but it's increasingly difficult to find impressive ones under fifteen dollars. Virtually overlooked these days, however, are the exceptional values available from Australia like this delicious Barossa Shiraz from 3 Rings. Packed with rich dark fruit, this silky smooth Shiraz really delivers at the price. Although there's a touch of alcohol, it's buffered nicely by the fruit making this especially great with grilled/bbq'd meats and perfect for Spring and Summer gatherings. Load up while you can as the price is normally $18!

2010 Cameron Hughes "Lot #341" Santa Maria Valley Syrah
Review Date: 4-13-2013
No, I don't know who actually made this wine. Cameron Hughes seems to have a talent for finding and bottling great wines from top producers at unbelievable prices, but they are famously tight lipped about the wine's origins. I do know that this is really good cool climate California Syrah. A suggestion of tar on the nose. Ripe, fresh-picked blueberries and cracked black pepper on the palate. Lively acidity and fine tannins frame a perfectly balanced expression of this classic Rhone varietal. All for less than $20. You don't need to know who made it to enjoy it. And your wallet won't care.

2010 Chateau de Maligny Chablis "Vieilles Vignes"
Review Date: 4-13-2013
Great villages level Chablis for less than $20? Yes! From a distinguished vineyard where the YOUNGEST vines were planted in 1945. That old vine character really shines through in this classic expression of Chablis. Lightly floral nose. Superb mineral character with lively citrus notes. Wonderful midpalate weight and ripeness. Superb focus and character. These 2010's are just such a joy to drink. If you are a lover of fine Chablis as I am you ought to be buying this by the case. If you have yet to enjoy this particular expression of the storied Chardonnay grape, then this is your chance.

2010 Château de la Charrière Bourgogne Rouge Domaine Yves Girardin
Review Date: 4-13-2013
From the southernmost part of the Cotes de Beaune. Mostly Santenay fruit. Lovely red fruits with a hint of spice. Charming. Approachable. Superb Pinot Noir at an unbelievable price.

2010 Bedrock Wine Company "Cuvée Karatas" Sonoma County Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc
Review Date: 4-12-2013
Lees contact, partial malo and barrel aging in 85% new oak, consistent with Bordeaux tradition, yields a cuvée that is complex and long-lived. Aromas of pineapple, peach, baked apple, toasted nuts and lemon butter lead in the nose, followed by creamy, honeyed baking spice flavors on the palate. This is all undercut by brilliant acidity, earthy minerality and more nuttiness on the finish, for an impeccably balanced, food-oriented white. In addition to seafood dishes, this will stand up to stronger fish like salmon or tuna, as well as roast chicken or pesto pasta.

2011 Quivira Dry Creek Valley Sauvignon Blanc
Review Date: 4-12-2013
This biodynamically-farmed and raised Sauvignon Blanc is nervy and refreshing with nice zing, but it has quite a bit of substance and length on the palate thanks to its origins in prime Dry Creek terroir. It's classic Dry Creek Sauvignon Blanc with a touch of the Loire, showing grassy notes supported by riper green apple and citrus aromas and flavors. Very limited in production! Enjoy with fresh oysters or later a harvest fig and goat cheese salad.

2011 Spellbound California Chardonnay
Review Date: 4-11-2013
Spellbound Chardonnay comes from Robert Mondavi and Folio Fine Wine Partners, and the 2011 if you can believe it is even more amazing than 2010. A very nice cool growing season gave great acid and texture to the "Baby Rombauer" style Chardonnay. So even with its rich creamy texture there are layers of flavors and complex fruit notes like citrus, tropical fruit, and vanilla. But with the drink-ability and balance of this 'life of the party' wine you could never guess the price!!! It will be bikini season soon so drink your spellbound in place of the cheese!!! 2012 Cibonne Tentations Côtes de Provence Rosé
Review Date: 4-11-2013
A classic Spring/Summer sippier that is classic and elegant, yet fun, flirty, and damn delicous! Bright, crisp, and mineral, with searingly amazing texture and acid. It will get your mouth watering for more! I can't wait to lay out on my deck and drink this baby all day long!!!(Christie Cartwright, Hollywood Buyer

2009 Domaine Edmond Cornu Ladoix "Les Carrières"
Review Date: 4-10-2013
Very nice notes of sweet coffee, smoke, with a touch of meatiness. A soft palate with smoked paprika, dark berries and plenty of minerality rounding it all up on the palate.

2011 Domaine Desertaux-Ferrand Bourgogne Rouge
Review Date: 4-10-2013
A classic little Burgundy to be have for an excellent price. An almost perfumed nose with notes of strawberry and cherry, spice-box, pot-pourri. All of that follows through on the palate as well. A very pretty wine.

2002 Louis Lequin Santenay 1er Cru "Le Passe-Temps"
Review Date: 4-10-2013
Incredible find from our buyers. A 2002 Burgundy showing at its peak! The beautiful garnet color let's us know of its age, followed by an array of tertiary aromas, brown sugar, cinnamon spices, plums and a touch of leather. It is a light/medium, quite delicate bodied wine to be appreciated slowly.

2010 Domaine Marchand-Freres Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru "Clos des Ormes"
Review Date: 4-10-2013
This is young but has so much potential. Loads of ripe cherry, mineral, spice and complex character. It is rich and unctuous on the palate. A real pleaser but wants to be cellared for a few years.

2002 Louis Lequin Santenay 1er Cru "Le Passe-Temps"
Review Date: 4-10-2013
This 2002 has reached its secondary stage of development, showing characteristics of leather, cigar box and smoky meats. It has lovely ripe cherry and strawberry compote flavors on the palate. The wine finishes long with tertiary notes of damp forest floor and loam. It's rare to get such a pristine example of a bottle aged wine from the winery at such a great price.
