After many years of shopping at K & L, I finally decided to spend even more time at my favorite store! I first came on board at "the shop" a little over a year ago working Friday nights and Saturdays. Now, as a full time member of the Redwood City staff, my wine education continues five days a week! My favorite wines in the world include the awesome grower-producer champagnes we carry, earthy pinot noir from the Burgundy region of France, as well as the excellent pinots from Oregon and California. I dream of one day having my own land on the Dundee Hills of Oregon and producing terrior driven pinot noirs! Most recently I have dedicated more time to tasting and studying wines from Italy. It is a complicated wine country with many grape varietals, regions, and laws, but one that produces some of the best wines in the world! This education is most certainly worth the effort! I have always been a big fan of beer and the large selection of beers we carry from all over the world is yet another reason I am excited to be working here and helping you choose from our super selection of brews! I look forward to tasting and learning more about our wonderful world of wines and helping you find the right wine, at the right price, for any occasion. 2008 Caiarossa "Pergolaia" Toscana

I often fear "Super Tuscan" blends of Sangiovese with Bordeaux varietals, so often the Sangiovese is poorly grown and suffers at the hand of the more powerful Bordeaux varietals even in small amounts. Segue to the “new” owner (since 2004) Eric Albada Jelgersma a Dutch Businessman who also owns Château Giscours and Château du Tertre in Margaux in Bordeaux and insert a very young French winemaker for his first venture in Tuscany… I cringed… However at the first whiff of aromas I knew that this wine is truly astounding. The blend is Sangiovese (85%), Merlot (10%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (2%) a “classic” Super Tuscan blend and hails from the Tuscan coast in the town of Riparbella near Bolgheri. The Sangiovese is brilliant, long, aromatic, complex fruit with layers of ripeness, earth, spice and hints of leather coupled with subtle hints herb and spice from the Cab Franc, supple mid palate from the Merlot and a bit of back end power from the Cabernet Sauvignon. All of this is aligned along a perfectly balanced central acidity that gives a long, long finish to this wine. Outstanding value, wonderfully drinking now and will age well for another 5-7 years.

Francois Peyrot Heritage Grande Champagne Cognac 750ml

An amazing brandy, especially for the money. Fifty year old spirits don't even exist anymore in the whisky market and they certainly don't exist for less than a couple thousand dollars. The Peyrot is a big, woody, spicy, robust Cognac. This isn't the ultra-smooth, supple, Louis XIII replacement. It's an old school Cognac from a country producer using nothing but his estate fruit and his own distillates.

This is good Cognac. This is really good Cognac actually. I had forgotten what high quality Peyrot offers until they came into see us and pour through their line up. It was a tasting of repeated double takes, me looking at David with my eyes asking, “This is really that good?” I was well impressed through the whole line, but really was floored with the Heritage.
This is what I want out of Cognac, rich and luscious, tones of vanilla and caramel, all wrapped up in perfectly integrated and textured French oak. There is a mantra that I always have in mind when tasting Spirits, “You can’t Fake Age.” This bottle has nuance and intrigue, it is rich, but it possesses and underlying complexity that you simply cannot recreate without a half of a century of aging in the French country side. We certainly hope you enjoy this truly great bottle.

2010 Sobon"Estate" Amador County Syrah

The wineries that Leon Sobon owns (Sobon Estate and Shenandoah Vineyards) have produced some of the best Zinfandels, Syrahs, and other fine red and white varietals over the past twenty years at comparatively, wonderfully low prices This estate Syrah is a perfect example of my assertion. Deep ruby in color, the opulent aromas of classic white pepper to plumy fruit notes explode from your glass, and leads to richly flavored, well integrated and focused Syrah in the mouth, with silky tannins and lush characteristics. The finish refuses to surrender and, as Rusty so well stated it, this Gem is an amazing value. This will be one of our house reds for the month, according to Rusty. 14.1% ABV

Germain Robin Low Gap 2 Year Old Wheat Whiskey 750ml

I think that Germain Robin makes elegant and well crafted spirits. The Low Gap is no exception from the other quality Germain Robin products. It is interesting and different but a pleasure to drink. It is smooth and round with a little spice. The Low Gap is medium bodied and a joy to drink.

Port Charlotte 10 Year Old Single Malt Whisky 750ml

This Port Charlotte 10 year old is a delicious single malt for those who love a little smoke with their drink. In the mouth there is a nice almost creamy roundness with subtle hints of brine. It is one of the most elegant smokey single malts from Islay that I have had.

2009 MacRostie Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

A ripe fruity wine in the mouth, with tons of bright high toned berry fruit, spice and a zippy acidity. This wine will pair well with, grilled meats and pasta dishes with heavier sauces. Give at least 30 minutes of air beforehand and the fruit will shine!

2012 A.A. Badenhorst "Secateurs" Chenin Blanc Swartland

This is a great value, and a wonderful introduction to South African Chenin Blanc.The fruit comes from bushvines planted in the 1960's and a some amount sees a little time in neutral oak for texture. The nose has notes of jasmine flower, honeysuckle, apricot, kumquat and honey. On the palate the wine is medium bodied with a round creamy texture and moderate "lemony" acidity that has a persistent finsih.

2010 Louis-Antoine Luyt Carignan "Trequilemu" Maule Valley

A must try for any fan of honest, pure wine with a sense of place, these naturally made wines from Antoine Luyt are dead ringers for Cru Beaujolais. Take one to your next blind tasting and it will stump the best of them. "Trequilemu" is 100% Carignan, from 70 year old vines. Its raspberry and blackberry aromas and flavors are flecked with earthy minerals; it is fresh and fruity but shows real substance and length. I would love this with a simple grilled steak lightly seasoned with herbs.

2010 Louis-Antoine Luyt Carignan "Sauzal" Maule Valley

A must try for any fan of honest, pure wine with a sense of place, these naturally made wines from Antoine Luyt are dead ringers for Cru Beaujolais. Take one to your next blind tasting and it will stump the best of them. This 100% Carignan from Chile is juicy, vibrant, and fresh, with crunchy red and blackberry notes and nice lift on the palate. It is almost too easy to drink...the perfect choice for for picnics or barbecues.

2002 Louis Lequin Santenay 1er Cru "Le Passe-Temps"

Here's a chance to get ready to drink red Burgundy at a great price. Very Chassagne-like in style, this Santenay nonetheless shows a wonderfully rich texture for a 2002. The nose is exceptionally round and supple with a nice minerally note and lightly spiced. On the palate the wine still shows a lovely texture with a nice structure of fine tannins and minerals with a light touch of earth while maintaining the wonderful sweet cherry richness the nose promised. It absolutely calls out for lambchops on the grill, .
