Staff Favorites - Doug Burress

Doug Burress
After many years of shopping at K & L, I finally decided to spend even more time at my favorite store! I first came on board at "the shop" a little over a year ago working Friday nights and Saturdays. Now, as a full time member of the Redwood City staff, my wine education continues five days a week! My favorite wines in the world include the awesome grower-producer champagnes we carry, earthy pinot noir from the Burgundy region of France, as well as the excellent pinots from Oregon and California. I dream of one day having my own land on the Dundee Hills of Oregon and producing terrior driven pinot noirs! Most recently I have dedicated more time to tasting and studying wines from Italy. It is a complicated wine country with many grape varietals, regions, and laws, but one that produces some of the best wines in the world! This education is most certainly worth the effort! I have always been a big fan of beer and the large selection of beers we carry from all over the world is yet another reason I am excited to be working here and helping you choose from our super selection of brews! I look forward to tasting and learning more about our wonderful world of wines and helping you find the right wine, at the right price, for any occasion. From a Sunday barbeque with family and friends, to that special bottle for a birthday, anniversary, or other occasion, we can help you find it here at the shop!

Franck Bonville Brut Rosé Champagne

Hello, cherry pie! It is amazing how a much a very small amount of pinot noir can change this (mostly) blanc de blanc into rose! Start with the nose, deep, ripe, bing cherries and tart raspberries. In the mouth, the same order...initially, fleshy cherries, cream and a hint of pomegranate. Then, the raspberries and minerality march in and demand your attention. Long, long finish. If you like "bright" Brut Rose and are seeking to expand your horizons, this is the one to buy. This gem, and the wonderful Ariston Aspasie Brut Rose, are my go-to picks for affordable rose sparklers that taste as if they are much more expensive. Olivier Bonville really is a fantastic winemaker!

Franck Bonville "Prestige" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne

This stunning blanc de blanc has a super, super clean and chalky nose. You can practically smell the fossils in the soil! Meyer lemon notes peek through with just a hint of nectarine and lemon curd.. On the palate, it fleshes out beautifully, with baked apples (initially) that finish with granny smith apples. This champagne is unusual in that it has boot ha tart and full character. It has, of course, Franck Bonville's wonderful quality and balance.

2010 Sesta di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino Pre-Arrival   | Approved
Review Date: 1-31-2015
Wow—I am so excited to see what this wine will look like given a few years! I am already impressed with the balance of tannin, acidity, and bright, red fruits. Already the tannins are a bit finer and rounder than many 2010s. This is a gorgeous brunello from a great vintage!

2013 Domaine du Tariquet "Classic" Cotes de Gascogne Blanc
Review Date: 1-31-2015
I discovered the wines of the Cotes de Gascogne almost by accident. I thought I was picking up a bottle of white Bordeaux when I noticed the difference in the label. The whites of Gascony can include Sauvignon, Semillon, and Muscadelle, just as in Bordeaux. However, you are just as likely to find Ugni Blanc, Colombard, or Gros and Petit Manseng. These wines are crisp, dry, refreshing, and almost universally inexpensive. The 2013 Domaine du Tariquet Classic Cotes de Gascogne Blanc is a superb example. From one of our top Armagnac producers.

2013 Siduri Sonoma County Pinot Noir
Review Date: 1-31-2015
Like all Siduri Pinots this does not skimp on fruit but there was clearly a deft hand guiding the winemaking allowing for a sense of equilibrium. The balance between the creamy texture and lush fruit lets the savory and spicy components poke through leaving an impression of complexity and freshness. In today's market for delicious Pinot Noir this is a bargain.

If you are still stuck in the mind set that New Zealand only prouduce good Sauvignon Blanc, then you are really missing out on some of the most awesome wines coming out of the country! This Bordeaux Blend is structured, balanced and have a touch of that gravelly pencil shaving notes that I usually only find in my $75+ Paulliac Bordeaux. This is what I served for my wedding back in November, 2014. Yes it would of been great if I could serve Krug for everyone coming to the wedding but being a bride on a budget, I search long and hard for the best sparkling wine for amazing price. After a panel tasting (the panel consist of our bridal party) the Mas Codina came up as the clear winner. Why did we love it so much? Well, great balanced of apple citrus combine with light nutty toasty touch, small tight bubbles and a smooth + balanced finish was the key. This wine is made in the traditional Champagne style with fair amount of bottle age on it. Simply amazing value for the top quality of wine you getting in the bottle. Cheers!

2010 Château Trillol Corbières   | Approved
Review Date: 1-31-2015
This is an excellent place to begin with Corbieres, a region situated just southwest of the Rhone Valley, that produces wines of exceptional quality and value. Made with a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan, the Trillol is a powerhouse of flavor, showing off dark blue and black fruit, ground black pepper, and some intriguing, rustic herbals. It has plenty of backbone, but the edges are round, providing a perfectly self-sufficient sipper, or an ideal pairing with herb-roasted chicken or beef stew.

2012 Castillo de Monseran Garnacha Cariñena
Review Date: 1-31-2015
Medium-bodied, it is characterized by fruity notes (cherry and raspberry) and hints of spices and herbs, sort of like a cross between Beaujolais and Bourgeuil. It is mouthwatering and savory. I like to give this a slight chill and pair it with grilled poultry or just sip it on the porch with some salami and salty cheese.

2012 Banshee Sonoma Coast Chardonnay   | Approved

This is a gorgeous chardonnay! It has some oak that comes through on the pallet but little to no butter flavor, crisp clean and refreshing! Definitely leans towards the French style of chardonnay. This would be perfect with fresh crab and seafoods, salads, chicken or is great by itself! Not to mention our buyer was able to get a great bottle price on it...if you're looking for a new chardonnay to try, do not hesitate to take a few of these home!

2013 Banshee Sonoma County Pinot Noir
Review Date: 1-29-2015
With every new release of Banshee I become more and more impressed with just how dedicated to quality these three young men are. This year they’ve really upped their game adding Winemaker Ross Cobb, of Cobb Vineyards, a little known winery to the masses but to us nerds this means something, and moving production to Copain’s new winemaking facility. Both of these moves are apparent to me in this new Sonoma County Pinot Noir. There seems to be a much finer point to the wine this year with better delineation of flavor, more pronounced acidity while still being fully interwoven in the wine and a bit more overall structure. All in all the fruit that most of our customers have come to know and love is still here but there is just a little bit more here than in past vintages. I’ve loved these wines for the value that they offer our customers over the years and I continue to love them for not resting on their laurels but to be in constant pursuit of upping their game.

2012 Domaine Marius Delarche Corton-Renardes Grand Cru
Review Date: 1-29-2015
For me, renardes, Bressandes and Clos du Roi are without equal among the grand cru reds from Crton. To findone, from a great vintage, at this price is only possible because of our direct purchase. The rich texture, drive and weight all reveal clearly tha tthis is Grand Cru. The palate impression is very rich, with ripe tannins. There is just a hint of sauvage/foxy notes that this vineyard is known for. Bravo Etienne! (03/2014)

2012 Domaine Delarche Aloxe-Corton
Review Date: 1-29-2015
As is often the case, there is a bright core of acidity here in the Aloxe, and more prominent red fruit notes. The tannin structure is very fine, and the finish persistent. Thi sis an elegant wine which will benefit from some time in the cellar. The color is deep and limpid, and athe lovely cherry fruit is most charming. (03/2014)
