2012 Viña Robles "Estate" Paso Robles Sauvignon Blanc
Review Date: 7-21-2014
The Vina Robles Jardine Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc starts off with aromas of lemon, lemon grass, and a dry, wicker-like note, before a subtle honeydew melon aspect reveals itself. While plush and round in texture, only a sliver of aforementioned melon pops up on the palate, and there is plenty of tart acidity sitting behind it, keeping the overall impression light and fresh. Probably the best inexpensive domestic Sauvignon Blancs I’ve crossed paths with recently.

2013 Margerum "K&L Cuvee" Happy Canyon Sauvignon Blanc
Review Date: 5-26-2014
With a nose offering up citrus, lemongrass, and honeydew melon, this is a vital, vivacious Sauvignon Blanc. Svelte on the palate, the flavors run to pomelo and melon, while managing just a suggestion of a mineral dimension in the form of powdery talc notes. Should perform yeoman duty as the summer party season commences!

2012 Kalinda Rheingau Riesling Qba
Review Date: 5-12-2014
Petrol and rocks start the wine in motion, with tangerine, lemon, and lime following close behind. While off dry, it hardly seems so; despite a slight bulge in the middle, it quickly comes to a point, finishing with a citric snap that keeps things brisk. Delicious, and a great value, too!

Franck Bonville Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Review Date: 4-16-2014
Fresh and racy, showing crisp apple and citrus, with hints of mineral and brioche rounding out the palate, this focused and elegant Champagne is as good as--or better than--its previous incarnations, and remains a steal for the price.

2012 Bernhard Ott "Am Berg" Grüner Veltliner Wagram
Review Date: 4-5-2014
Neither overly broad, nor enamel strippingly austere, the Am Berg has a generous mid-palate of sweet herb, yellow fruit, and tangerine that gets focus from lentil, pepper, and wet river cobbles notes. Better still, this charmer comes in at a very reasonable price.

2010 Freemark Abbey Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 3-31-2014
Freemark Abbey hits its mark! Dusty cassis, graphite, balsam-cedar notes on the nose lead to a palate that shows moderately sweet, plummy fruit, before veering in a more dry, woodsy-spicy direction. The wine makes a solid impact in a more restrained California style. The tannins rally a bit on the finish, enough to give the wine shape, but without taking over the show.

2012 MacRostie Sonoma Coast Chardonnay
Review Date: 3-31-2014
The 2012 Macrostie Sonoma Coast Chardonnay marries vibrant citrus flavors of lime and tangerine to a thick, silky texture, understated butter-cream notes, and a honeyed dimension. This is an easy to like, up front, domestic Chardonnay, which, while not holding anything back, doesn’t slather itself on, either. Should win loads of friends, especially as it does all this, and yet still comes in under the twenty dollar mark.

2012 True Myth Edna Valley Chardonnay
Review Date: 3-30-2014
Let’s begin at the finish this time, because that’s my favorite part of this wine. What this has over a lot of other California Chardonnays, of this (or any) price range, is enviably clean, crisp fruit. If you don’t like them too tropical, or highly oaked, then this one is for you. While the wine does see some new cooperage, it is far from its dominant feature, only imparting a little vanilla to the medium bodied, candied citrus flavors. This squeezes a number of virtues into a value priced, domestic Chardonnay bottle: nicely done.

2012 Neyers "Sage Canyon" Rhone Blend
Review Date: 3-9-2014
Gamy strawberry aromas pair with floral brightness in this vivacious, light-medium bodied, moderately tannic red. Taste it, and the florality takes the upper hand; the wine seems to ascend, though it keeps some dry spice flavors lower down, which emerge on the finish, and tether this balloon to earth. You may not imagine yourself in the French Mediterranean while sipping this, but for a California red blend in that style, this is compelling and integral.

2010 Joseph Jewell "Hallberg Vineyard" Russian River Pinot Noir
Review Date: 3-9-2014
Rich dark cherry aromas mingle with sassafras on the nose of this Russian River Pinot Noir. On the palate, the fruit has a very natural, un-confected power to it, with shadings of rosehip leading to a lively, vibrant finish.

2012 Mönchhof Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett
Review Date: 2-5-2014
There is plenty of immediate charm to this lovely, vital Kabinett. The nose offers some of the spice that the vineyard’s name hints at, along with wet slate and floral notes. The palate has lots of open, ripe peach flavors, though the balance is more acid than sweet, with the finish drawing in fairly taut, and the spice notes giving a slight reprise.

Powers & Sons 12 Year Old John's Lane Pot Still Irish Whiskey 750ml
Review Date: 1-20-2014
The all pot-stilled Powers John’s Lane bottling really ratchets up the intensity and complexity from the usual run of Irish whiskies, while remaining true to type. You’d never mistake this for Bourbon, Scotch or any other style of whiskey. The nose gives up orange marmalade, yellow plum, honeysuckle, powdery vanilla, and cedar, before a duet between toasted graininess and yuzu fruit, with spice and crème brulee accents, begins on the palate. I hope we soon see more like this!

Lot 40 Rye 2012 Release Canadian Whisky 750ml
Review Date: 1-20-2014
Unctuous and rich, this Canadian Rye packs in an intriguing array of flavors that stays true to the character of the grain. Style-wise, it skews to the sweeter side of things, with a fat mid-palate, and a supple, seamless texture. This is definitely the best new addition to the--of recent days--rather un-crowded field of contemplative, sipping Rye Whiskeys that I've had occasion to sample.

2011 Chalone Vineyard Monterey County Pinot Noir
Review Date: 12-6-2013
Pinot Noir is still one of the most difficult grapes to get right in general, but especially at the lower end of the price spectrum, and Chalone has done a commendable job with their 2011 Monterey County Pinot Noir. Cherry-berry flavors, with just a smidgeon of cocoa, have the concentration to show to good effect while happily staying this side of understated, skewing more tart than sweet.

2011 Soter "North Valley" Willamette Valley Oregon Pinot Noir
Review Date: 11-13-2013
Soter has shown a masterly hand in the 2011 North Valley. This is spritely, dynamic Willamette Pinot Noir. Dark cherry and rosehip notes, with a dry edge, on the nose segue into lifted berry flavors buttressed by a dusting of earthy cocoa. The slight chalk of the tannins adds texture to the vibrant, lively finish.
