Susan Thornett
I’ve been with K&L since summer 2007, moving to retail from a restaurant background. I love coming up with fun food and wine pairings! I tend to enjoy and review wines that convey something interesting about their region of origin, and I usually prefer subtle, savoury wines. That said, dessert wines are always a particular weakness of mine! Often my reviewed wines- aperitif, main course or pudding- will be from France, Germany, or Austria. You will also see me recommending heaps of beers- so if you always dreamed of having a personal beer sommelier you can sign up for that. My ideal beer is a crispy English session ale but I enjoy exploring many different styles, from Californian double IPAs to sour Belgian Gueuzes. I’m not a beer expert by any means but we have a great selection here at K&L and I’m having a great time working my way through - hope you can join me!

2012 Sittella Shiraz / Grenache / Tempranillo Swan Valley Western Australia   | Public Pending Approval

Interesting wine with lovely precision and brightness. Lots of spicy, bramble fruit and forest berries. Medium bodied and perhaps surprisingly elegant for what is undoubtedly quite a warm region. Once again showcasing winemaker Colby's ability to craft wines with power and concentration without making them clumsy or over-extracted. Châteauneuf-du-Pape meets Rioja...with a juicy, pure Aussie edge.

Classic Margaret River Cab. Black and blue fruit. Cassis, blackcurrant, plum with overtones of tobacco, bittersweet chocolate and crushed mint. Juicy, ripe tannins that have softened nicely with time in bottle. Lovely full bodied, polished Cab for a super reasonable price.

2012 Oakridge 864 Single Block Series "Guerin Block 4" Pinot Noir Yarra Valley   | Public Pending Approval

Exceptional Pinot Noir. Perfect varietal correctness, wonderful elegance, purity and layers of complexity on the palate. Floral, spicy perfumed nose with savory earthy tones underpinning the freshness of the fruit. Silky, supple texture, ultra-fine tannins. Ripe, small forest berries, dusty spices, clove, pine bark, nutmeg. A medium bodied wine (as Pinot should be in my opinion) that is feminine and elegant on the palate with layers of nuance and depth and the potential to improve over the next decade-plus.

Wow! I can see why a block was chosen from this vineyard to be Oakridge's prestigious 864 Single Block in 2012. A remarkably attractive Pinot with a super-pure, ripe berry fruit nose. Baking spices, dry leaves, subtle oak touches and dusty earth. Such a fragrant wine, a true Pinot bouquet. On the palate the wine matches up: Ripe berries in the dark red fruit spectrum, clove, subtle cinnamon stick, warm earth and new leather. A tight core of minerality adds another dimension on the finish that is fresh with lovely bright acidity. Beautiful, elegant Pinot, designed with food in mind, remarkable restraint and purity.

2012 Oakridge Single Vineyard Series "Oakridge/Whitsend Vineyard" Shiraz Yarra Valley   | Public Pending Approval

Such an exciting expression of really cool climate Aussie Shiraz. I think in a blind tasting this would have pretty much everyone thinking: Northern Rhone. Peppercorn-rubbed red meat, violets and clove come forth on the nose. The palate is savory and brooding. Freshly crushed black fruits, some red, almost raspberry nuances sneak in along with more cracked black pepper, garrigue, thyme and warm dark earth. The wine has that lovely meaty / gamey edge that I just can't get enough of in Syrah / Shiraz.

2013 Zudugarai "Amats" Getariako Txakolina
Review Date: 8-12-2014
If you've been waiting to try Txakolina, this is the perfect opportunity! A great price for an entry level Txako. If you are new to Txako, expect something close to a Sauvignon Blanc, with a ton of minerality and a touch of spritz. Low in alcohol, these are wines that you can enjoy several refreshing glasses of with light nibbles on a warm day.

2012 Veramonte "Ritual" Pinot Noir Casablanca Valley
Review Date: 8-12-2014
This is a winner! Lush for a Pinot, but by no means overripe. Warm spices, crushed strawberries and a hint of minerality. This will be not only a crowd pleaser, but is an excellent selection for almost any weeknight meal, from a simple salad of roasted chicken, avocados, dried cherries, and a creamy blue cheese dressing, to a wild rice and quinoa pilaf with sliced sausage and spinach.

Super racy, mineral-infused dry Riesling. Linear, focused and super zesty. Lovely bright acidity, real depth of flavor from the old vines. Amazing wine for shellfish. Will age for a decade plus.

2010 Mount Langi Ghiran "Billi Billi" Shiraz Grampians Victoria
Review Date: 8-12-2014
The Billi Billi is a screaming deal for $10! The bouquet is packed with dark plum, blackberry, blueberry, violets and a hint of chocolate. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied with good balancing acidity keeping it bright, fresh and juicy. The perfect house red to keep on hand. Buy a case!

2013 Shoofly Wines Pinot Noir Yarra Valley Victoria
Review Date: 8-12-2014
In Australia there are just three major regions that are known for producing Pinot Noir: the Mornington Peninsula, Tasmania and Yarra Valley. So, $10 for Yarra Valley Pinot is pretty crazy. The nose is bright and lifted, with raspberry, cherry, earth, dried tangerine peel, spice and a hint of minerals. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied with supple, silky tannins and good length. This is a super value for a daily drinking Pinot Noir. If you're a fan of California's Rickshaw or Angeline, you've got to give this a try.

2009 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Pessac-Léognan
Review Date: 8-12-2014
When you take one of my favorite Chateaus in Bordeaux and combine it with a ripe and focused vintage, you have something to get excited about. This shows the characteristic combination of finesse, minerality and complexity I look for. Frankly, I would rather have this wine than many of the so-called super seconds, which sell for $250 and up. This is classic Pessac Leognan, with an interesting gravel and mineral component, but plenty of fruit as well. Bravo! If I were you, I would not miss this wine!

2012 Oakridge Single Vineyard Series "d'Aloisio Vineyard" Chardonnay Yarra Valley   | Public Pending Approval
Review Date: 8-10-2014
Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image
Classic Oakridge. Focus, drive, precision and ethereal texture. From the d'Aloisio vineyard, this wine shows a little more breath and generosity than some of the other SVS wines. The acid line is touch less firm and the fruit profile riper and slightly rounder. All of this is relative of course as winemaker David Bicknell crafts all of the Oakridge wines with linear persistence and restraint as his guiding mantra. Tastes like great white Burgundy...and will cellar like one too! The low pricing is reflective of our direct import deal cutting out all middle men. This is very serious Chardonnay.

2009 Capbern Gasqueton, St-Estèphe
Review Date: 8-9-2014
Dark crimson color. The nose has beautiful notes of coffee, violets, plums, blackberries and chocolate, along with classic crushed stones. All that transitions on the palate to a very marked chocolate covered cherry, vanilla, balanced by the medium+ acidity and a marked amount of tannins. This is a warm and inviting wine, with a perfect balance between the ripeness of fruit, tannins and the oak notes. Very well put together. It will age beautifully.
