Susan Thornett
I’ve been with K&L since summer 2007, moving to retail from a restaurant background. I love coming up with fun food and wine pairings! I tend to enjoy and review wines that convey something interesting about their region of origin, and I usually prefer subtle, savoury wines. That said, dessert wines are always a particular weakness of mine! Often my reviewed wines- aperitif, main course or pudding- will be from France, Germany, or Austria. You will also see me recommending heaps of beers- so if you always dreamed of having a personal beer sommelier you can sign up for that. My ideal beer is a crispy English session ale but I enjoy exploring many different styles, from Californian double IPAs to sour Belgian Gueuzes. I’m not a beer expert by any means but we have a great selection here at K&L and I’m having a great time working my way through - hope you can join me!

2010 Freemark Abbey Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 4-4-2014
Freemark Abbey has been back on our radar for some time now and we are all fired up about their Cabernets. After a few years of less than stellar releases in the mid 90s/early 00s where they just seemed to be producing too much wine, they straightened up and have gotten back on the road to stardom. The 2010 Cabernet instantly reminded us of their classic wines of the 70s and 80s when Freemark Abbey were making slightly rustic, old-school wines with plenty of charm and varietal correctness. The nose is wonderfully reminiscent of Cabs of yesteryear with aromas of warm clay, black currant, olive and graphite, all the while remaining on the more savory side of the spectrum. Plush and inviting with rock solid black fruits this feels incredibly honest and real in a sea of Cabs that are just getting out of hand. Sure it has nice toasty oak, but it is fully integrated in the wine. Yes there are some great, structural tannins here but nothing that is going to make your teeth scream. The classic old leather, bay leaf, currant, black olive, cocoa powder flavors are like your favorite chair calling you in after a long work day. Get back to a true classic!

2010 Fanti Sant'Antimo Sassomagno
Review Date: 4-4-2014
Man is this a great red wine for the price! Ripe fruit, but balanced, with a fresh finish. If you're accustomed to coming home from a long day at work and pouring yourself a glass of wine (with or without food) you will be stoked to find such a great deal. Seriously, the blend on this is nothing but friendly. The lack of tannins negate the need for food, and at 14% all you really need with this wine is a couch and prime time. Greg himself bought a case, and I won't be far behind him.

2009 Georg Albrecht Schneider Dornfelder
Review Date: 4-4-2014
Very dynamic, spicy, light, mild tannins, and loads of minerality. Bonus points for serving a Dornfelder to your wine nerd friends.

2009 Drautz Able Lemberger Württemburg
Review Date: 4-4-2014
This Lemberger (also known as Blaufrankish) is a gorgeous example of the varietal. Juicy, crushed berries, with a savory note and low in alcohol at only 13%. Try this as a substitute for a Pinot Noir at one of your next meals.

2012 Moric Blaufränkisch Burgenland
Review Date: 4-4-2014
When teaching classes on esoteric varietals I often include the Blaufrankisch from Moric. This bottling is rich and complex, showing intense black fruit, while showing similarities to the wines of Morey-St-Denis.

2012 Raventos i Blanc "La Rosa" Penedes
Review Date: 4-3-2014
Very rich and creamy for a rose. Strawberry, white flowers, and sunlight. This rose is great on its own.

2012 Dr. F. Weins-Prüm Estate Riesling (Feinherb)
Review Date: 4-3-2014
Off dry, this will be great with slightly spicy ethnic foods. Indian Rogan Josh would be so happy with a chilled glass of this Riesling!

2012 Eva Fricke Lorchhäuser Seligmacher Riesling
Review Date: 4-3-2014
Hands down one of the top Rieslings of 2012 that we carry. Try a bottle now, but consider laying down a case of this to age for 10-20 years.

2012 Eva Fricke Lorcher Riesling
Review Date: 4-3-2014
This is the fourth vintage of Eva Fricke's that we've carried and each year is more impressive than the last. This is a great, clean, everyday drinking Riesling.

2012 Dönnhoff Estate Riesling Trocken (Dry)
Review Date: 4-3-2014
Great wine, with just a touch of RS. Starts out rich and finishes dry.

2012 Tessier "Saralee's Vineyard" Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
Review Date: 4-3-2014
Sadly the last vintage of the Saralee Pinot Noir (the site was recently bought), this Pinot is very Californian in style. Full of jammy fruit and new French oak influence, this is a Pinot that can hold its own against some serious food in its infancy. Left to age this wine will no doubt mature into an exquisite siren of a wine.

2012 Tessier "Fenaughty Vineyard" El Dorado County Grenache
Review Date: 4-3-2014
A stunning, locally made Grenache. After establishing her reputation for exquisitely made Pinots, wine maker Kristie Tacey has branched out and begun making an immensely enjoyable Grenache. Dark stone fruit, black plums and cherries intertwine with subtle sarsaparilla notes. Rich and round on the palate with great acidity on the finish.

2006 Umathum "Frauenkirchen vom Stein" St. Laurent Burganland
Review Date: 4-3-2014
A truly extraordinary wine. Deciding not to filter has added to the enchantment of this wine, bringing with it more structure and nuance. Perhaps the best Austrian wine I've tasted to date. Serve this with a beautifully roasted leg of lamb stuffed with rosemary and lavender, sliced thin, and naped with a butter finished pan sauce. Bliss.

2013 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 4-3-2014
94 points. Drink this while you're waiting for your 2009 and 2010 to age.

2010 Stadt Lahr Lahrer Kronenbuhl "BF" Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) Baden
Review Date: 4-2-2014
Tastes a bit older than it is, but still a very fresh, balanced Pinot, with medium tannins, that would be great with spaetzle and cheese.
