2012 Farmers Jane "Field Red" Mendocino County Red Blend
Review Date: 1-30-2014
I'm a sucker for Carignan and also a sucker for the wines coming from Farmers Jane. Native yeast ferments and old vine fruit, two of my favorite things. The Carignan is sourced from 85-year-old vines at Hawkeye Ranch in Mendocino County, and the Grenache portion comes from Santa Barbara County. Fresh red fruit flavors of crushed raspberry and wild strawberry jam. This has terrific balance and wild flavors. Get on board now before these wines reach cult status.

2012 Farmers Jane "Field White" Santa Barbara County White Blend
Review Date: 1-30-2014
It's hard to put a face or definition to the new "Natural Wine" movement but I think that Farmers Jane is a great place to start. All native yeast fermentation, following the biodyanmic calendar and sourced from a single vineyard, the 2012 is a blend of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne. The source and blend may change year to year (last year was Chenin based) but each wine captures the integrity of what the producers are trying to accomplish. Pure expression of time and place. This Rhone blend is vibrant with great natural acidity (white Rhone varieties tend toward flabbiness), persimmon, baked apple and peach flavors. I can't wait to see what else they get up to.

2012 Alta Maria Vineyards Santa Maria Chardonnay
Review Date: 1-30-2014
Pure, clean Chardonnay fruit with lots of apple and citrus fruit. This has really nice weight. Unadulterated Chardonnay, it's what we should all be drinking.

2012 Dragonette Cellars Happy Canyon Sauvignon Blanc
Review Date: 1-30-2014
Always impressive and consistently one of my favorite SBs produced in the US. The Happy Canyon bottling reminds more of great white Bordeaux with its cantaloupe and citrus rind flavors. Lemon custard and papaya round out the flavors. Focused and finessed, this is a great expression of the region.

1997 Laphroaig 16 Year Old K&L Exclusive Signatory Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml
Review Date: 11-18-2013
I'll be honest, I'm not usually a fan of peaty styles but when they have the integration that this whisky has, I take notice. Yes it is smoky and oily, little bit more of a hardwood charcoal note but good charcoal, not that crappy self lighting kind. But what really works for me here is the age and the oak integration. As peaty whiskys age, the primary notes of smoke tend to take a few steps back and some of the sweeter balancing notes start to emerge. Like I said, not usually a fan but when you get a whisky this complex and interesting, you just may become one.

2012 Chakana "Maipe Reserve" Malbec Mendoza
Review Date: 11-17-2013
The Maipe is always a reliable middle styled Malbec. This strikes the right balance of silky texture and well portioned black fruit flavors. Notes of currant, licorice, chocolate and lavendar. If you are looking to take that next step up in quality for a delicious Malbec, this one's in the right direction.

Faultline Straight Bourbon Whiskey 750ml
Review Date: 10-30-2013
I love the subtle perfume of the rye in this. I get that subtle grassy note with sweet vanilla notes and buttered toffee character. Congrats to the spirits buyers on this selection, this is my go to favorite right now.

Clear Creek Framboise Eau de Vie 375ml
Review Date: 10-30-2013
Very rare and incredibly hard to produce, notes that tend to get people's attention. This is as pure an expression of Framboise that you could hope for, beautiful clean aromas and a long finish. Sure it's not cheap but the best Eau de Vies never are, and this is one of the best.

2012 J. Bouchon "Canto Norte" Maule Valley
Review Date: 9-5-2013
Don't shy away from this if you are a merlot hater. This is actually a perfect blend with the addition of a little carmenere, cab sauv and cab franc. Currants, blackberry, baking spices, and a touch of capsicum. Classic Bordeaux style blend with a nice core of fruit. Delicious and a steal for the price!

2010 Finca El Encinal Crianza Ribera del Duero
Review Date: 9-5-2013
Deep blackberry and roasted plum fruit with a touch of vanilla on the finish. This is superlative Ribera with supple tannins and bold but not over the top fruit. I can feel some grilled lamb chops paired with this wine calling my name.

2012 Renacer "Punto Final" Malbec Mendoza
Review Date: 7-9-2013
Terrific blackberry fruit and raspberry coulis flavors mix with roasted meat and a touch of vanilla. It has a lush mouthfeel and supple sweet tannins. Many Malbecs have an overwhelming over-ripeness but this wine glides along a seamless edge of balance and fruit lusciousness.

2004 La Rioja Alta "Viña Ardanza" Reserva Rioja
Review Date: 7-9-2013
I am a huge fan of La Rioja Alta. I think the wines are classic, balanced and age really well. The '04 Ardanza is a great follow-up to the 2001 (one of our best selling wines last year!) and has the stuffing to last for quite awhile. Sweet red currants, mulled cherries and baked plums fill the palate. Aromas of pipe tobacco, vanilla and spice compliment the fruit. An earthy forest floor quality lends beauty to a long and complex finish. Even more accessible than the 2001, this wine will drink now and continue to develop for quite some time.

2011 Andrew Thomas "Braemore" Sémillon Hunter Valley
Review Date: 12-4-2012
One of the top producers of Semillon in the Hunter Valley. Steely and nervy, with lots of citrus and mineral notes. One of my favorite white wines right now.

2008 Trimbach Riesling Reserve
Review Date: 7-5-2011
Trimbach’s “Reserve” bottling is consummate Alsatian styled Riesling. It has great tone and minerality and is packed with brined apple flavors and crunchy pear notes. The “Reserve” has more length and finish than the regular bottling and for a subtle price difference; it is worth going that extra 3 bucks!
