2013 l'Evangile, Pomerol Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 4-29-2014
From the Lafite family, this winery went through a complete remodel several years ago, and instituted a stricter harvesting program. The wine is one of the top wines from Pomerol, pretty much every year. Loads of fresh macerated berries, spice & plum notes, hints of chocolate--lots going on here. Very pretty wine.

2013 Doisy-Daëne, Sauternes Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 4-29-2014
90% Semillon & 10% Sauvignon Blanc. Sweet apricots mingled with notes of honey, dried apricots and hints of candied lemon peel. Very smooth and viscous. 3 out of 4 stars.

Very impressive showing from this Mouton-owned property. The wine displays lots of berry fruit, good grip and nice length and complexity. **½ to ***

2013 Cantenac Brown, Margaux Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 4-28-2014
*** Pleasant surprise, lots of fruit here, deep and rich berry fruit accented by notes of milk chocolate. Big, full wine.

2013 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc, Pessac-Léognan Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 4-28-2014
*** A full-bodied wine, has more oak than most of its counterparts, tropical fruit as well as citrus notes dominate the wine with a slightly saline quality on the finish.

2013 Giscours, Margaux Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 4-28-2014
**½ to *** Lots of nice red fruit here, spicy, peppery with hints of chocolate. Tasted three times.

2013 Rieussec, Sauternes Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 4-28-2014
Another Lafite property that is doing wonderful things. 95.5% Semilion & 4.5% Sauvignon Blanc with apricot blossoms and hints of candied lime with a gorgeous punch of candied ginger/orange peel.

2013 Suduiraut, Sauternes Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 4-28-2014
Very rich and powerful, golden and honeyed, with lots of candied orange and caramel.

2013 Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge, Pessac-Léognan Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 4-28-2014
Displays nice minerality, large-scaled; there's good deep dark berry fruit along with tell-tale signs of black licorice and tar. Goes back to a style seen in 2003-2008 wines.

2013 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 4-28-2014
Lots of red fruit here, hints of cinnamon and some subtle spice notes, there are some noticeable tannins here.

2011 Poujeaux, Moulis (1.5L)
Review Date: 4-23-2014
Easily the best wine to come out of Moulis, Poujeaux has a very distinctive style. Black licorice and black cherry, with hints of herbs. This wine also has layers of fruit and a nice, long finish.

2011 Fonplégade, St-Emilion
Review Date: 4-23-2014
This is an up-and-coming property. They have a new rich American owner and a great young director in Jean-Christophe Meyrou, and with the help of famed oenologist Michel Rolland some great things are happening here. Besides being an incredible value, it is also one of the best wines we tasted on our entire trip. Black raspberry, plum, spice and red berry fruit, all perfectly integrated. Noticeable tannins, but layered and integrated well. Very tasty and racy; this wine is so sleek and seductive it feels like a super model.

2011 Lanessan, Haut-Médoc
Review Date: 4-14-2014
This is one of the great classics as far as values go-always good and dependable. It has a racy nose with hints of herbs, flowers and loads of red fruits. Nice creaminess. This is classic.

2012 Château Pesquié "Le Paradou" Grenache Vin de France

The search for the perfect everyday drinking wine has ended! The 2012 Le Paradou is flat-out delicious! The very first sniff from the glass tells you this is going to be a highly enjoyable glass of wine with aromas of black pepper, plum, baking spices and hints of fresh flowers. The palate is a gorgeous array of black cherry cola, raspberry and herbs with great balance. This wine feels vibrantly alive, with its lively acidity framing the bright fruit flavors. The wine is incredibly versatile: it has enough fruit and body to easily be enjoyed on its own but has the structure and depth to seamlessly pair with most cuisines. This is one of the better values I have tasted this year and I will be sure to pick up at least a few bottles for myself!
Top Value! Drink from 2014 to 2016
