2011 Cambria "Bench Break" Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay
Review Date: 10-14-2013

A step up from the Katherine’s Vineyard Chardonnay in both stature and price is the 2011 Cambria “ Bench Break Vineyard” Santa Maria valley Chardonnay. This wine sings from the glass with aromas of lemon oil, graham cracker and hazelnut aromas with a rich palate full of baked apple, nut skin, tropical fruits and vanilla. This wine feels like a Corton Charlemagne with its rich palate, viscous mouth feel, depth and power. A fabulous value this is a great California chardonnay that won’t break the bank.

What makes the ideal Chardonnay? For me it has to have notes of exotic tropical fruits, good acidity and verve and lastly a nice touch of rich oak that helps to frame the wine but does not overwhelm the fruit and spice characteristics of the wine. The 2011 Cambria “Katherine’s Vineyard” Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay is just that wine: gorgeous fruit, just the right amount of acid and a rich, buttery hint of oak on the finish-just what you want in an everyday drinking Chardonnay.

2010 St. Clement Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

There was a time when finding a great Napa Cab for under $20 was easy, nowadays after recalibrating for the year 2013 I am on the lookout for a great Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon for under $30. The 2010 St. Clement Cabernet Sauvignon is that wine, deep aromas of black currants, roasted meat, pain grille and rosemary slowly linger from the glass. The palate is a restrained blend of plum, blackberry, dark coffee and spice notes. The palate is dry and long with good energy and verve and the perfect sense of weight. This is a well-crafted Cabernet Sauvignon that harkens back to the classically made wines of the 70s & 80s in Napa Valley.

2010 St. Clement "Oroppas" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

I’ve been a fan of St. Clement Oroppas for years! This has been a wine that consistently over-delivers year-after-year vintage-to-vintage. If you’re seeking out the structure of a Bordeaux Red coupled with the fruit and seamless feel of a California Cabernet Sauvignon then your search has ended: drink the 2010 St. Clement Oroppas. The wine starts out with aromas of black plums, cola notes, mocha and hints of clove and eucalyptus. The palate is a mix of dark macerated berries, Baker’s chocolate and spice notes nicely buffered by racy acidity and soft mocha-laced accents. The wine is amazingly approachable and easy drinking in its youth but can easily age 5-15 years. A delicious wine that carries on the tradition of Oroppas being one of the better Bordeaux blend values made in Napa Valley.

Absolut Elyx Single Estate Vodka 1L

One of my drinks of choice when I’m out at a bar is vodka rocks with a twist. It is simple and easy to make and generally leaves me hangover free. Usually I opt for Belvedere because it is smooth and easy to drink even though it may lack a truly distinct flavor. When I tasted the Absolut Elyx Vodka I was blown away, it was smooth & rich but had a very clean and distinctive profile with hints of vanilla and hazelnut notes on the finish. A wonderful tasting vodka and an even better value this is perfect on its own or use it as a top-shelf blending ingredient in your next martini or gimlet.

2010 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 4-17-2013
What does greatness cost? In the Rhône it costs $159.99 a bottle. If you want a truly magical experience you can’t go wrong with Clos des Papes; this wine hits on all cylinders.

2009 Malartic-Lagravière, Pessac-Léognan

Big, bold, with great tannins. This wine sings with fruit and terroir.

2011 Léoville-Poyferré, St-Julien Pre-Arrival
Review Date: 5-17-2012
Just call them butter, 'cause they're on a roll! This is the third vintage in a row that Poyferré made one of the best wines of the vintage. This wine is gorgeous, with black cherry, cola and mashed sour blackberries. Layered, with nice length and good fruit. Shows some tannins.

2005 Hall Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

An up-and-coming winery, Hall vineyards is quickly gaining a reputation for making excellent Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons. Under the guidance of winemaker Steve Leveque and consulting winemaker David Ramey, Hall winery has made an outstanding 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2005 Hall Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark purple hue in the glass with notes of creosote, graphite, dark chocolate and creme de cassis. On the palate, the wine is dark and brooding with rich flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cocoa and mocha that all are balanced nicely against firm tannins and good acidity. The finish is long and lush and this wine was so enjoyable the last time had this at lunch I couldn't resist a second glass. If you're searching for that next great affordable California Cabernet Sauvignon then look no further.
