Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Gin 375ml
Review Date: 5-2-2014
It was only a few weeks ago that I freaked out in a small spirits shop in Edinburgh when I noticed this diminutive bottle of gin sitting on the shelf. For years, the Monkey 47 had been unobtanium, a regrettable situation for all the knowledgeable and gin soaked. Driscoll and Kurani had not yet experienced this legendary gin, but thanks to the UKs reasonable tasting regulations -the old "taste whatever you like" rule- we were soon dunking our noses in a few drops of its magnificence. I think tasting this after several other gins really put into perspective how special it really is. Created through the confluence of British aesthetics, Indian flavors, and the distinctly Teutonic natural treasure that is the Schwarzwald, The Monkey packs an enormous amount of complexity into that little bottle. It's the sort of gin that will save that cocktail you're about to ruin. You could have just as well served it straight because it sips beautifully even at room temperature. It’s quite a departure from your standard recipe gin, although some familiar elements are layered throughout. There is a strong yet soothing evergreen presence. A keynote if you will, but by no means the only focus. On the nose a dried floral aroma is accented by a twinge of spicy ginger. At the front, what seems like a citrus or chamomile quickly morphs into tea tree and sweet herbs, lemon verbena -now cucumber peel and pepper, it just keeps on going. I’ve got to stop trying to describe its flavor, its not working. It has a glorious tendency to be completely different with each sip, a true rollercoaster of flavors. Every single one of its 47 botanicals is tuned to the same perfect frequency. It's wild and utterly fabulous, but not in an awkward way. Instead, it seems to be all very deliberate, even stoic. I gladly forked over the £40s the shop was asking, as did my colleagues. We nearly cried when we heard it would finally be arriving stateside.

2007 Michel Loriot "Monodie Meunier" Brut Champagne Extra Brut
Review Date: 4-25-2014
This is tropical, slightly savory, salted popcorn, cocoa, fresh bread, tons of red fruit (cherries, raspberry) slightly wacky and totally wonderful.

Baron Fuente "Grande Réserve" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 4-25-2014
Gwah?!? $24 champagne that taste great! The French must be pissed. Fruit tart candies, slight brioche, leesy on the palate are evident, but not cheesy. Wonderful texture and great freshness. An inexpensive champagne with a wonderful personality.

Michel Arnould Verzenay Extra Brut Champagne
Review Date: 4-25-2014
This lovely dry extra brut is perfect for ringing in the Spring. The minerality is bracing and magnificent. Lot's of white berries and chalk. Surprising balance despite the overt dryness.

2012 Mt. Beautiful Pinot Noir Cheviot Hills
Review Date: 4-25-2014
Fresh and fun Mt Beautiful has few contenders in the price range. Bright cherry and dried herbs with acidity for ages. Great value.

2013 Pewsey Vale Riesling Eden Valley South Australia
Review Date: 4-25-2014
Ultra clean and high acid, exactly what I want from Eden Valley riesling. Tons of citrus, low on other fruits. Drink it now!

2011 Deovlet "La Encantada Vineyards" Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir
Review Date: 4-25-2014
This seductive offering from the gorgeous La Encantada vineyard in the heart of the Santa Rita Hills appellation, has everything you'd want in a SRH Pinot Noir, but without over doing it. Well integrated at this point, but with plenty of structure, I'd love to see this in 2-3 years, it should be world class.

2012 Alta Maria Vineyards Santa Maria Chardonnay
Review Date: 4-25-2014
very well put together, owning to the excellent fruit source and well thought out wine making. Particularly well structured with racy acids and bright fresh minerality. The subtle use of barrel during fermentation adds depth and richness.

2010 Correggia "Val dei Preti" Nebbiolo Roero
Review Date: 6-26-2013
Here is one of the finest Roero produced Nebbiolo. Extremely well put together, with impeccable structure. It's not particularly dark or earthy, but has the perfect amount of spice to balance the bright red fruit. Totally worth the Langhe pricing....

2011 Poderi Morini "Savignone" Savignon Rosso
Review Date: 6-26-2013
I'm in love. I'm not embarrassed to be in love with the cheapskate wine. Made from 100% centesimino (loosely translated to cheapo!) is certainly a deal. Blueberry, pepper, structured and altogether fabulous. It reminds me of some of Piedmont's lesser known varietals, but without the floral side of Ruche. A stupendous wine for the price, geared specifically for Italian wine geeks...

2012 Vietti Arneis Roero
Review Date: 6-26-2013
Is this really still as good as I remember? Yes yes yes yes yes...Fabulously aromatic, but not perfumed. N: Tropical fruit and flowers, fun hoppy resin, musky but clean as proper arneis should be. Pepper and soft savory elements balance the powerful fruit floral side perfectly. Great acidity.

Aberlour - A'Bunadh Cask Strength Single Malt 750ml
Review Date: 9-5-2012
Some people search for certain batches of the Aberlour A'Bunadh, but honestly I rarely taste the Aberlour's various batches without thinking, "Dang!" This is always a monster. If you like Sherry influence, power and intensity in your single malt, this is the product for you. You might just get lucky and get a batch that one of the critics rates extremely highly, but either way you'll have a sold cask strength dram to rely on.

123 Tequila "Dos" 100% Organic Reposado Tequila 750ml
Review Date: 9-5-2012
The 123 Repo adds a hint of Oak Spice to the already lovely blanco. Very subtle use of oak doesn't over sweeten or overpower the character of the distillate.

123 Tequila "Uno" 100% Organic Blanco Tequila 750ml
Review Date: 9-5-2012
A classic lowland tequila made in a sustainable way, this shows plenty of the rich earthy spice that you'd expect from a lowland, but balanced with plenty of fruit. Plus it's ORGANIC!

10 Cane Barbados Rum 750ml
Review Date: 9-5-2012
This light rum from Trinidad is fine for mixing and uses fresh pressed cane instead of molasses. Aging for 1 year in french oak, it has a light golden hue. A refined and low intensity style different from many other "agricole" rums.
