David Driscoll likes to drink alcohol when he is not working at K&L. His main interests include wine, beer, and distilled spirits. Before he worked here he went to college at a decent school, got a masters degree from an OK school, worked as a waiter and taught elementary school in Chinatown. He decided to get into the wine business after reading a few books about wine and realizing that one cannot seriously learn about wine solely through reading. His career goals include: trying to convince K&L customers that he does know something despite his youthful appearance, and learning everything about everything about every single wine ever made.

2012 Ad Lib (Larry Cherubino) "Hen & Chicken" Chardonnay Western Australia
Review Date: 10-24-2014
Get in while the gettin's good with this bottle. This is the best Chardonnay deal since we found the Bernier all those years ago. This is fresh, stonefruit-driven, refreshing white wine with character and nuance for $12.99. This is case wine. This is party wine. This is Thanksgiving wine. You roll into the party and people think you spend $25 a bottle because it tastes so darn good. Your secret is safe with us though. Love it.

2012 Tongue In Groove "Clayvin Vineyard" Pinot Noir Marlborough
Review Date: 10-24-2014
Lovely earthy notes and a fine level of tannins on the back end give a bit more nuance to this than the standard NZ options. A bit more structured and deep in flavor. Well made.

2013 FRAM Shiraz Swartland
Review Date: 10-24-2014
Rich and meaty, but never sweet or over the top. I usually avoid Shiraz at the sub-$20 price point because it tends to be too sweet or rich. The Fram is super complex, however, as the fruit soon turns into iron and a gamey note. Fun stuff.

2013 FRAM Chardonnay Robertson
Review Date: 10-24-2014
Unbeatable for the money. Everything you want in high-quality, clean, unoaked, fresh, inexpensive Chardonnay. The purity of the mineral notes are almost Chablis-like. A HOT deal.

2012 Oakridge Single Vineyard Series "Oakridge/Whitsend Vineyard" Shiraz Yarra Valley
Review Date: 9-16-2014
If you like big, high-alcohol, fruit-bomb Shiraz, then DO NOT get this wine. This Shiraz from Oakridge is for Northern Rhone lovers, people who crave Cote Rotie, and love that hint of black pepper underneath a delicate layer of dark red fruit. If I had tasted this blind, I would have guessed Northern Rhone and been entirely confident in that wager. AUSTRALIA? Jeez, I'm going to have to re-examine my feelings about Australian wine. This is amazing stuff.

Singani 63 Bolivian Muscat Brandy 750ml
Review Date: 9-15-2014
The is the do-it-all spirit for your liquor cabinet (and you don't even know what it is!). Fruity, floral, and clean, this can be substituted into a number of different cocktails in place of tequila, vodka, gin, and rum. I've made Singani Daiquiris, Singani Margaritas, Singani Negronis, Bloody Maries, Singani and Tonic, Singani Sangria--they're all fantastic. Bolivia's finest export may indeed be Singani. Now you just need to queue up "Che" on Netflix-instant, imagine you're Soderbergh drinking Singani on the set, and drink until your heart's content.

Kilchoman K&L Exclusive 100% Islay Single Bourbon Barrel #344 Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml
Review Date: 9-10-2014
This is as Islay as it gets. If you like Islay whisky, it doesn't get any purer. The barley was grown on Islay, right next door to Kilchoman, harvested on Islay, malted on Islay, fermented on Islay, distilled on Islay, matured on Islay. AND it's delicious. Pure, fragrant, wildly savage with tangy citrus and savory peat smoke. Kilchoman whisky is so good that it sometimes blows my mind. The fact that there's such a pedigree to boot makes it all the more fun to sell.

2011 Mas des Agrunelles "l'IndigŤne" Coteaux du Languedoc
Review Date: 9-5-2014
YUM! Restrained winemaking from the Languedoc? I must have accidentally traveled back in time a few decades. No, wait, this is from the 2011 vintage. What's going on? Beautifully concentrated fruit that showcases the quality of the grape without overripe sweetness, and a bit of black pepper to balance out that lushness. This is a HOT deal if you like Rhone wines with grace and elegance. A stunningly delicious bottle that brings the goods for $20. Top-notch.

2012 Mas des Agrunelles "Les Mauves" Coteaux du Languedoc
Review Date: 9-5-2014
Man this is such a breath of fresh air from the Languedoc! Instead of big, fat, silky, overly sweet fruit we get crisp, fresh, almost spritzy acidity and a load of tangy berries that taste as if they've just come out of the fridge, rather than off that plate you left sitting in the sun all day long. This is wine for people who love fruit, not dessert. This is real winemaking for drinkers who like balance, not richness. Bravo!

2004 Michel Loriot "Les Sources du Flagot" Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne
Review Date: 8-7-2014
To get 10-year-old wine this good for this price is a true coup on behalf of Gary Westby. There's no malolactic fermentation, so the acidity of this wine needed a decade of mellowing to finally balance out with the richness of lees aging. The result is a perfect juxtaposition of tart, mouth-watering acidity with rich, bready Champagne goodness. All for a very reasonable price. I'd take this over Dom P, or Cristal, any day of the week.

Willett Distillery 2 Year Old Kentucky Rye Whiskey 750ml
Review Date: 8-1-2014
This is the most exciting young rye I've tasted in years, mainly because it's the first new KENTUCKY rye that actually tastes like rye bread, with that sweet hint of corn. I've given out samples of this to friends from St. George distillery, and other folks that I know who make whiskey for a living; they all have nothing but praise for the Kulsveen's latest project. You have to understand: most of the rye on the market is all from MGP distillery in Indiana, even if it says Bulleit, Dickel, Templeton, or Redemption. It's been purchased in bulk and simply relabeled. The Willett is actual home-made Kentucky rye, a la Rittenhouse and Sazerac, that tastes like real rye whiskey should. Add in the cask strength proof and the fiery spices and you've got one helluva product. I CANNOT WAIT for this to turn four or five years old! Bravo!

Hubert Clavelin "Brut-Comtť" Cremant du Jura
Review Date: 7-23-2014
For those in search of bargain "Champagne" this is as close as I've found outside of the actual realm. This 100% Chardonnay wine has all the minerality, yeasty, and bready aromas of true Champagne, yet the price tag of a higher-end French regional selection. The Jura is a fine source of sparklers, but this one outdoes the competition.

1998 Laphroaig 15 Year Old K&L Exclusive Signatory Single Refill Sherry Butt Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml
Review Date: 7-19-2014
$169 seems steep when you're talking about 15 year old single malt, but trust me when I tell you that old casks of iconic distilleries like Laphroaig are not going to be available much longer -- at least for a retailer like K&L to purchase. This is a huge, in-your-face version of Laphroaig; no water added, not diluted in any way. Big peat, big smoke, big Islay in a bottle. The fact that this was aged in sherry is icing on the cake.

2013 TWR (Te Whare Ra) Riesling "D" Marlborough
Review Date: 7-16-2014
This is always one of the prettiest wines we receive in each year. The juxtaposition of lime pith and cocktail fruit balances the fruit-forward nature of the wine. There's no sweetness whatsoever, yet the wine is zesty and fun in a way that sweet Rieslings can usually be. Again, as is the case with all the TWR wines, the price is quite generous.

2013 TWR (Te Whare Ra) Chardonnay Marlborough
Review Date: 7-16-2014
The TWR Chardonnay is basically white Burgundy for a fair price. Rather than overpay for Meursault or Chassagne that won't drink well for another decade, why not indulge yourself now with the Te Whare Ra? The richness from oak aging is apparent, but it's not the focus of the palate. The piercing mineral notes are at the forefront and the fruit offers a counterbalance to the refreshing acidity. Great stuff.
