I think I started down the path into the wine world with my first job, at 16, bussing tables in a Chinese restaurant. Blue Nun Riesling was the big seller (this in 1985, so don't laugh). While the Blue Nun Riesling was not an "epiphany" wine, I drank a lot of it. It was a magnum of Robert Sinskey Claret that I shared with friends while watching the 1994 World Cup that got me started reading about wine (Brazil won). My first "wow" wine was that same year, when a customer gave me a glass of 1982 Haut Brion. It was amazing. Next I found pinot noir, specifically a 1994 Whitcraft Bien Nacido, and I was hooked. I knew I wanted to sell wine so I moved from restaurants to wholesale wine sales, working for Metamora in Ohio and Kentucky. But after continued consolidation of distributors and the realization, that in wholesale you wear blinders, tasting only the wines you sell, I knew I wanted to move to the retail side. I would like to say I moved from Cincinnati just for K&L but I left the "Red" state for Los Angeles (a Cincinnati Reds and Cincinnati Bengals fan in San Francisco just would not do) and I was very lucky to find the K&L store in Hollywood. The rest is history.

2010 Neipperg Collection Red

I thought this honestly smelled just like the 2009 Seigneurs d’Aiguilhe, Côtes de Castillon, which I tried just a few days before. This is a great value wine for only $11. The nose is all plum and spice, heady and rich, almost cherry cola. The palate is richer than I thought it would be for a 2010.

2010 Haut-Riot "Cuvée Juliette" Bordeaux

An excellent value from an estate in the Entre-Deux-Mers. This is surprisingly supple for being 80% Cabernet. Bright currant and raspberry on the nose with a juicy and bright mouthfeel. There is a beautiful lifted red fruit on the finish. Great value and great food wine.

This is Carignan! I love this wine. Very layered with savory meaty floral spice all showing aromatically. Gorgeous palate of raspberry and more savory notes with a structured finish. Drink now, age or have with dinner or all three.

2009 Cantenac Brown, Margaux

In the last big Bordeaux tasting, this was my favorite wine. It is also the consensus of K&L’s Bordeaux buyers that this is probably the best wine Cantenac has ever made, both heady and elegant at the same time. Coffee, black raspberry, cassis, vanilla and licorice on the nose. The palate is very elegant and seamless, with the rich fruit taking center stage, balanced by licorice and coffee along with rocky minerality and cedar, all of which carry on through the long, lingering finish. Damn, I really love this wine.

2009 Lamouroux, Graves

This is a new wine for us, and it’s a terrific value. The nose is subdued with cedar, currants and an underlying spice note. The spice shows as anise on the palate with bright red fruit. The finish is surprisingly long, with anise and a lifted red raspberry note.

2009 Bernabeleva "Arroyo del Tortolas" Garnacha Vinos de Madrid

The wines from Bernabeleva are two of the best Spanish wines outside of Rioja I have tasted in a long time. When we were trying these the buyer told a story of a customer who had these wines say it taste like Chateauneuf du Pape in the 70's.The winemaker uses 300-3000 liter barrels, uses stems which helps reduce color, alcohol and acidity. This wine he also uses partial carbonic maceration. The nose is "pretty" with potpourri and spice along with fragrant red fruit. Lovely raspberry and red cherry on the palate and a touch of astringency on the finish. This is one of those wines that runs along the knife's edge of rich power and aromatic elegance and must be experienced.

2009 Bois-Martin, Pessac-Léognan

Another great value from a property down the road from Smith-Haut-Lafitte, right next to Fieuzal and Malartic-Lagravière. Raspberry and cedar on the nose, with ripe red raspberry on the palate. But with all that big fruit, a beautiful cedar and mineral thread lies underneath. The long finish shows more of the mineral and cedar. Lovely, lovely wine.
