I think I started down the path into the wine world with my first job, at 16, bussing tables in a Chinese restaurant. Blue Nun Riesling was the big seller (this in 1985, so don't laugh). While the Blue Nun Riesling was not an "epiphany" wine, I drank a lot of it. It was a magnum of Robert Sinskey Claret that I shared with friends while watching the 1994 World Cup that got me started reading about wine (Brazil won). My first "wow" wine was that same year, when a customer gave me a glass of 1982 Haut Brion. It was amazing. Next I found pinot noir, specifically a 1994 Whitcraft Bien Nacido, and I was hooked. I knew I wanted to sell wine so I moved from restaurants to wholesale wine sales, working for Metamora in Ohio and Kentucky. But after continued consolidation of distributors and the realization, that in wholesale you wear blinders, tasting only the wines you sell, I knew I wanted to move to the retail side. I would like to say I moved from Cincinnati just for K&L but I left the "Red" state for Los Angeles (a Cincinnati Reds and Cincinnati Bengals fan in San Francisco just would not do) and I was very lucky to find the K&L store in Hollywood. The rest is history.

Brouwerij Slaapmutske "Triple Nightcap" Triple, Beligum 750ml

Where to begin with this beer. The owner, Dany De Smet, worked for Huyghe Brewery (think Delirium Tremens), and in 1999, to celebrate the birth of his son, he brewed the beer that sparked this brewery. The name Slaapmutske means "sleeping cap," meaning this is the beer before going to sleep, a "Night Cap" as an extension of this name. This beer is a Triple, but is much more than that. The color is a golden amber with a egg-white head. The color is very hazy, almost Hefeweizen in appearance. The rich (triple malt) is a bit hidden, and I had to find out why. It turns out that is because of the extra finishing hops. Using whole hops giving a flowery, bitter and spicy finish. Lots of tart fruit, caramel and a bit of clove on the palate. This isn't the typical Triple, which is why I like it. Think of it as an amp/hopped up Triple that stays very balanced.

2006 Langoa-Barton, St-Julien

This was a big hit in the Best of Bordeaux tasting in November. Beautiful cassis nose with a bit of cedar. The palate was all cassis and raspberry with polished tannins and a long cassis finish. At this price (only $49.99), this is the perfect case wine for cellaring.

2006 Donabaum Setzberg Riesling Smaragd

Austrian riesling is somewhat rare (less than 5% total plantings), but the Wachau region produces some of the best Austria has to offer. The Wachau has a large swing between day and night temperatures providing the grapes with both great sugar and acid levels. The Smaragd on the label is the quality level that roughly translates to a high spatlese or low auslese. This wine blew me away with its high-tone floral and petrol aromas. The lemon-lime flavors, creamy texture and long finish will make you fall for the elegant rieslings that Austria produces.
