I think I started down the path into the wine world with my first job, at 16, bussing tables in a Chinese restaurant. Blue Nun Riesling was the big seller (this in 1985, so don't laugh). While the Blue Nun Riesling was not an "epiphany" wine, I drank a lot of it. It was a magnum of Robert Sinskey Claret that I shared with friends while watching the 1994 World Cup that got me started reading about wine (Brazil won). My first "wow" wine was that same year, when a customer gave me a glass of 1982 Haut Brion. It was amazing. Next I found pinot noir, specifically a 1994 Whitcraft Bien Nacido, and I was hooked. I knew I wanted to sell wine so I moved from restaurants to wholesale wine sales, working for Metamora in Ohio and Kentucky. But after continued consolidation of distributors and the realization, that in wholesale you wear blinders, tasting only the wines you sell, I knew I wanted to move to the retail side. I would like to say I moved from Cincinnati just for K&L but I left the "Red" state for Los Angeles (a Cincinnati Reds and Cincinnati Bengals fan in San Francisco just would not do) and I was very lucky to find the K&L store in Hollywood. The rest is history.

2009 Moulin Haut Laroque, Fronsac
Review Date: 4-3-2012
Made by Michel Rolland, this displays some modern richness, but at $30 it is a value for its quality. Rich dark fruit dominates the nose with a bit of oak spice. The palate shows plenty of the black fruit, but there is an underlying rocky mineral flavor as well as more spice. The astringent finish is long, dominated by the oak spice. This is a big, modern Bordeaux.

2005 Elisabeth Goutorbe Brut Champagne
Review Date: 3-2-2012
After the Big Tent event in Hollywood customers were crowed around trying to get the last of this Champagne it was like stock traders in the pit. HA! This seemed to be the hit of the annual Champagne tasting and it is back. I loved this Champagne for its richness and elegance. Beautiful black cherry nose and flavors on the palate with an underlying spice and brioche. The finish is very long with an underlying savory note.

2009 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac
Review Date: 3-1-2012
The nose is filled with perfume, floral notes, incense and cassis. The layered palate is rich cassis, spice, cedar and mineral. The richness of the wine keeps the tannins in check while the acidity brightens the wine on the finish. This wine is stunning!

2009 La Lagune, Haut-Médoc
Review Date: 3-1-2012
This was one of my favorites of the 09 tasting. The nose was layered with red berry fruit, mineral and a slight damp earth in the background. The polished palate was red and black fruit and graphite with a long long finish. Elegant and rich at the same time. Beautiful.

2007 Viña Eguía Reserva Rioja
Review Date: 2-9-2012
This is a great value for a reserva Rioja. The nose shows spice, leather and bright red fruit. The palate is soft and integrated with raspberry, sweet tobacco and spice. The long finish is dominated by vanilla and fragrant red fruit. This wine is half the price it should be.

2008 l'Avocat Rouge, Graves
Review Date: 1-4-2012
Another hit from a favorite at K&L, and it was the hit of the last in-store l’Avocat tasting, too. Bright red raspberry fruit, spice and minerality on the nose and palate with a soft feel and just a bit of tannin on the finish.

2009 Bord'Eaux Merlot
Review Date: 11-23-2011
This is the perfect Holiday Cocktail wine and it even comes in a 3 Liter box! It is more of a California styled Merlot with ripe berry and plum along with a touch of spice. The palate is soft and bright with just a bit of astringency on the finish.

2002 Bruno Michel "Pauline" Blanc de Blancs Brut Champagne
Review Date: 10-21-2011
Wow. This is my favorite from Bruno Michel now. The wine is aged 7 months on the lees and 10 months in the bottle gives this Champagne a beautiful elegant texture with floral and spice on the nose with pear and mineral on the palate. This is great to drink now or age!!!!

2009 Barthez, Haut-Médoc
Review Date: 10-11-2011
We tried this wine in Bordeaux back in April and again last week here in the store, and I’m pleased to report that it hasn't really suffered any bottle shock. Full of bright fragrant red fruit aromas, cranberry and currant, with spice and slightly earthy flavors. There is bright acidity, which makes the fruit finish somewhat tart, and astringent tannins that suggest you should have this with dinner if you want to drink this now. It should develop in the cellar nicely, too.
