2012 Oakridge Single Vineyard Series "Oakridge/Whitsend Vineyard" Shiraz Yarra Valley
Review Date: 9-4-2014
This is not a big and rich Aussie Shiraz. This is cool weather, spicy, and complex Shiraz from perhaps the best producer in the Yarra Valley (one of the coldest appellations in Australia). This Shiraz is delicate and crisp, with brambly notes of cranberry and white pepper tightly wound in an elegant package. A fantastic red for $23!

2013 TWR (Te Whare Ra) Chardonnay Marlborough

Unmistakably Chardonnay, the wine has aromas of almond and wet gravel and a slight straw color. But Te Whare Ra's Chardonnay is more elegant than the nose would have you believe--a racy and bright wine filled with lemon flavors and a slight hint of oak that is sure to satisfy any fan of cool weather whites.

2013 TWR (Te Whare Ra) Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough

Another triumph from one of our favorite producers in New Zealand. This Blanc is edgy and very sharp, with quintessential New Zealand bright citrus and slight grassy flavors, complemented by fig and lychee aromas. This biodynamic beauty has so much to offer fans of Sauvignon Blanc; one of TWR's best yet, and still at a great price!

2013 TWR (Te Whare Ra) Pinot Noir Marlborough

This is a Pinot with structure--a nervy and delicious cool weather red with lean red fruit flavors but plenty of mouth-coating tannins. The fruit notes here are slightly bitter, lean raspberry and plum resting behind cassis and lavender, leaving a wonderfully long impression on the palate. The winemakers at Te Whare Ra took full advantage of the excellent 2013 growing season to craft this mouthwatering Pinot.

2011 Don Ventura "ViŮa Caneiro" Ribeira Sacra

An excellent price for an excellent wine! Just a bit leaner than some of our other Ribeira offerings, but not lacking in flavor and intensity, the Caneiro benefits from its steep, slate filled vineyards and is loaded with minerality. Its flavors of elegant and bitter raspberry are backed up by mouth-coating tannins.

2009 Remelluri Reserva Rioja

This Tempranillo is rounder and more lush than some of our other Riojas, but its old vine pedigree shines through in its complexity. Its soft plum and fig flavors and mellow acidity are wrapped in a long finish of white pepper. It's a remarkable wine from a good vintage and a legendary vineyard.

Zippy, fresh, and tasty, this is one of my favorite rosés in the store. Bright but round and complex, with lifted flavors of light strawberry and a bracing mouthfeel. This will give Bandol rosés a run for their money.

2008 Pyramid Valley Vineyards "Calvert" Pinot Noir Central Otago (Biodynamic)

Pulling fruit from the same source as the famous Felton Road label, the minimalist winemaking team at Pyramid has crafted a unique and delicious wine very different from the Felton expression. This Pinot is full of earth and spice, a layered drink of Indian spices, blueberry, and tobacco with a lifted finish of menthol and bright acidity. Definitely one of my favorite New Zealand Pinots on the shelf--and one with a little bottle age too.

2011 Te Mata "Estate" Cabernets/Merlot Hawkes Bay New Zealand

This is a fantastic value for any fan of hearty Cab/Merlot blends. A rich, dark fruit core and just enough tannin structure and spice make this a very serious wine for not a lot of money.

Great release here from a well known distillery that never puts out distillery bottlings in the U.S. This single malt does the best when it is expressed with sherry barrels like this one: dark, decadent and very rich.

Now that's some good drinkin'! This rye is rich and delicious, with vanilla and chocolate notes over classic rye leather and cracked pepper--perfect on its own or for all your Manhattan needs. Not as sweet as some of the LDI stuff coming out of Indiana, not as dry as some of 100% rye Rittenhouse styled whiskeys in our store--it's just right.

2012 Carlos Diaz "Estrela" Ribeira Sacra

A fantastic price for an excellent wine! The diaz is all the finesse and bright mencia fruit you should expect from a well made ribeira sacra. Elegant, peppery, with firm acidity and raspberry fruits, this is an excellent pinot alternative for those wanting something different and something Spanish. At this price- do not pass this one up.

Wonderful wine- great vintage- renowned producer. This new zealand beauty is a sharp pinot with a long finish, loaded with earthy notes of dust and black fruit. This will age gracefully in your cellar for years to come- definitely one of new zealand's best.

As close to chablis as Australia gets- this is a racy and lean chardonnay with bright stonefruit flavors and a great mouthfeel finish. An excellent value at $25!
