2009 La Fleur Calon, Montagne St-Emilion
Review Date: 5-30-2013
Medium deep ruby in color, the nose shows lush plumy to blueberry notes with just a hint of wet stone minerality. With its soft, round, integrated entry, this Gem, which is mostly Merlot, offers up immediate drinkability and completeness, with a long, warm finish. Dusty has informed me that this Gem will be one of our house reds for the month. 14.0% ABV

2009 Arnauton, Fronsac
Review Date: 5-30-2013
Inky in color, the nose exhibits a woodsy, almost mushroomy note with distinctive cassis to blueberry fruit overtones. In its creamy, rich, viscous, fleshy mouth presentation, this Gem is well-integrated, balanced, broad and loaded with lush, deep, ripe fruit. As with the Beaumont, this Gem will drink in the near-term (three to six years) and Rusty has told me to bring at least a few cases home for that purpose, For those of you who are hung up on points from the wine gods, The Wine Spectator gave this 89 points.14.5% ABV

2009 Beaumont, Haut-Médoc (1.5L)
Review Date: 5-30-2013
We have imported this wonderful Cru Bourgeois for well over twenty years. Deeply colored, this lovely, opulent wine shows tons of cassis to mocha aromas, with a broad, well integrated, viscous mouthfeel, and a long, rich finish. Rusty has informed me that this near-term Gem will be our house red for the next three to six years. For those of you who are hung up on points from the wine gods, The Wine Enthusiasts gave this puppy 89 to 90 points.14.0% ABV

2007 Viña Eguía Reserva Rioja
Review Date: 5-29-2013
Add the Vina Eguia Reserva Rioja to the long, long list of fantastic deals from Spain. Drinking perfectly now, this wine has the leather and tobacco notes of an older Rioja while maintaining a youthful balance thanks to the acid. Black cherry, raspberry, and cola notes complement dried herbs, vanilla, and a hint of menthol on the finish. This is a delicious wine for your next bbq.

2010 Walter Hansel "South Slope Vineyard" Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
Review Date: 5-29-2013
Walter Hansel has done it again. Somehow they consistently churn out some of the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay the Russian River Valley has to offer. This year’s South Slope bottling is surely the most open and forward of the 2010 bottlings. Pure red cherry, red currant and pastille notes combine on the nose with a touch of spice cake for a very ripe and alluring introduction to the wine. This ripeness and willingness is mirrored on the palate with a continuation of cherry fruit, apple skin, pomegranate and rhubarb notes. Long and lasting this is one of those easy to drink pinots that you don’t need to think too much about but has plenty to keep you interested and involved in the wine.

2010 Walter Hansel "The Meadows" Russian River Valley Chardonnay
Review Date: 5-29-2013
It is nothing new for us to expound on the quality and relative value of the Walter Hansel wines, we’ve done it for years, but we are very excited about their new Chardonnay bottling. The Meadows bottling, from a new parcel on the estate, is a tremendous value for $25. This offers the same texture and pitch as their more familiar offerings for a fraction of the cost. Fleshy with a creamy core of peach pit, honeydew melon and apricot preserves this has all the richness you’d want. But it also shows the hallmark balance of the winery with pretty herbal tones of thyme and a surprising base of minerality. Surely this is one of those Chardonnay perched squarely in the stylistic middle ground, not too buttery and oaky but surely has both and not to strict and linear either. In other words I think this is a wine that almost any Domestic Chardonnay drinker will enjoy.

2010 Trapiche "Broquel" Malbec
Review Date: 5-29-2013
This is delicious Malbec! Fruit forward, with plum confit flavors, hints of licorice and subtly spicy, toasty accents. The tannins are smooth and nicely balanced, making this equally ready for a pre-dinner glass or the dinner table.

2010 Te Mata "Awatea" Bordeaux Blend Hawkes Bay New Zealand
Review Date: 5-28-2013
The Awatea is a great example of why we need to have wines from more than a few regions around the world. A Bordeaux blend from Hawkes Bay, it’s not Bordeaux, but has Bordeaux characteristics and not California but has new world characteristics too. The deep dark palate of fruit with wonderful fine tannins is highlighted by lovely exotic wood and fairly delicate spices. There is an enticing minerality and bracing acidity thread all the way through the palate to the finish, and I’d feel very secure putting this down for a number of years to let the secondary characteristics emerge. A fantastic wine and a steal of a price.
