2010 Dalwhinnie "Moonambel" Shiraz Pyrenees Victoria
Review Date: 8-13-2013

Combination of different hand selected top parcels across the estate. Really the bench mark reflection of this incredible estate. This Shiraz shows deep, saturated, dark red fruits, baking spice, vanilla and clove. Medium to full bodied, long, structured, elegant yet intense. Already a stunning wine but will continue to develop beautifully in the cellar.

This wine has a lifted nose of Black Currant, Cassis, crushed mint and graphite. On the palate it is richly textured, powerful and juicy. Lovely balance between fruit and structure with ample ultra-fine tannins providing good persistence and long cellaring potential. Awesome Cab!

From the very cool 2011 vintage this wine has great drive and focus. Delicious crunchy orchard fruit, fresh grains, toast, malt. Good flinty mineral tones. Bright but finely balanced acidity. Exceptional persistence on the palate.

2011 Oakridge Local Vineyard Series "Denton Vineyard" Chardonnay Yarra Valley

The softest and most rounded of the Local Vineyard Series wine from Oakridge. Ripe orchard fruit, yellow peach and fresh apricots. Broader and less linear than the other vineyard expressions. Very charming and immediately expressive. Silky texture, elegant. A true expression of place as the wines are all made identically.

Intensely flinty and mineral driven. Intriguing aromas of matchstick and spicy white oak. Bright quince and crunchy Anjou pears are highlighted on the long, linear and chiseled palate. Quite Chablis like. Very much for Burgundian Chardonnay drinkers rather than big butter bomb lovers.

Exciting cool-climate Aussie Shiraz. Pure, soft, rich red fruits. Ground hard spices like nutmeg and clove. A touch of earthy, meaty Syrah quality to add another dimension. Lovely toasty French oak polish to the wine. Dynamite Shiraz for $19.99!

Good fresh St. N de Bourgueil. Pure fruited with just subtle hints of Cab Francs herbal side. Elegant and lively on the palette. Crushed tart red fruits and a touch of wet leaf.

Best young Chard I have ever tasted, period. I am simply amazed by this wine. Drive, texture, complex layers of flavor so dynamic they defy description. Exotic spices, Agarwood, endless mineral tones. Simply amazing.

2012 Bench Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

WOW! The 2011 of this wine was one of the best deals in $20 Pinot but the new 2012 beats it hands-down! I am so excited for the first of the 2012 red wines to start filling in. At last a real high quality California vintage after a couple pretty average ones. This wine is predominantly sourced from the Sangiacomo vineyard on the Sonoma Coast. It shows excellent brightness and purity and the hallmark vintage traits of great physiological ripeness and flavor development but with very moderate alcohol levels. Purely red fruited with exotic Asian spices, a touch of well integrated oak and forest floor nuances that appear with a little air. Exceptional value.

2010 Amici Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 6-30-2013

A good follow up to one of my favorite 2009 Napa Cabs. This wine shows the cooler vintage but also this time around the fruit comes from the Rutherford and Yountville valley floor vineyards. This gives it a little more supple tannin and generosity. The wine still has the big concentration balanced with freshness that Amici has been doing so well for a few years now. Great Napa Cab at a fraction of the cost some of the big names charge.

2011 Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico
Review Date: 5-31-2013

A broad and instantly appealing wine showing the a rich fruit character of the warm 2011 vintage in Tuscany. Chianti still seems to have a negative stigma attached to it from all those bad wines produced from the region. However this is a wine that does a lot to convince people there are some classics to be found if one looks in the right places. Dark, saturated, ripe fruits. A touch of spicy oak and roasted earth. The tannins are present but beautifully softened by this wines unctuous mid palate fruit. Great wine for enjoying right now and for the next 5+ years. Perfect for grilled red meats.

2002 Bruno Michel "Cuvee Millésime" Brut Champagne

As with all Bruno Michel's wines this is very interesting. He works Biodynamically and the wines are generally slightly on the esoteric side. The nose of this wine has an intriguing Pecorino cheese note, a touch of saline character that also shows through on the palate. It has bright green apple and citrus notes wrapped with some more toasty rich hazelnut character showing on the finish. Complex and intriguing, more of a food orientated wine than a simple sipper. Enjoy!

Franck Bonville "Belles Voyes" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne

I don't think there is anything I can say about this wine that Gary or my colleagues haven't already said yet I feel compelled to review it. Hands down my favorite Champagne in the store. Even when you take much more expensive wines into account it's hard to say that considerably more cash gets you any improvement in quality.

Launois "Quartz" Blanc de Blancs Brut Champagne
Review Date: 5-13-2013

Great wine that is a little more reserved than most of Launois' rich, decadent style. From a single vineyard and bottled at a slightly lower pressure. Soft orchard fruits abound, some fleshy peach character and a nice toasty note on the finish with our being overly buttery of nutty. This restraint allows the quality of fruit to show through a little more precisely. Excellent value.

2010 Pyramid Valley Vineyards "Earth Smoke" Pinot Noir North Canterbury New Zealand
Review Date: 4-9-2013
Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image
The Earth Smoke is my preferred bottling from the Home Vineyard offerings. I love the depth and intrigue this wine brings to the table. The fruit, especially aromatically, is more reserved than the Angel Flower block; however the wine has awesome layers of detail and interest. Dense earthy tones and the rich limestone soil show through in this wine. The whole thing is more guarded and veiled yet within that subtlety there is so much finesse and character. A really soulful bottling that will truly engage Burgundy drinkers and shows the depth and subtly that New Zealand Pinot can have.
