2012 Framingham Pinot Noir Marlborough
Review Date: 4-5-2014

A graceful style Pinot but with plenty of mid-palate concentration. Expressive nose of wild berries and forest floor, maybe even suggestion of smoke. The structure is supple with acidity playing the major role in elongating the wine on the palate. Quite moreish and easy to drink, showing purity and a nice level of restraint along side easy juicy red fruits and some leaf-litter savory components. Certainly more for the Burgundy lover than the big blockbuster Pinot folks. Pretty cool wine especially for this price point.

2011 Torbreck "Juveniles" Grenache-Shiraz-Mourvedre Barossa Valley South Australia
Review Date: 3-28-2014

I am normally a fan of this release from Torbreck, In fact I often like it over some of their much more expensive bottlings that can be a bit excessively brawny for my tastes. However this 2011 release is something really special. The vintage was exceptionally cold in Barossa and due to this the wine has a very elegant structure and more restraint than one might expect from these varietals and region. The wine is aromatic with floral spice notes and a touch of cracked peppercorns. On the palate the wine is decidedly medium bodied with incredibly silky soft tannins and supple mouth feel. It is vibrant and soft with balanced, gentle acidity and plenty of length on the palate despite the wines elegant form. A lovely reflection of what can result from a tricky cool vintage.

2010 Giusti e Zanza "Perbruno" Syrah Toscana
Review Date: 3-12-2014
Treading a fine line between ripe, rich and extracted Syrah and a more savory, balanced incarnations. Big, dark, rich fruit, with roasted earth, smoked meat and dark spices. A full-bodied wine with just enough acidity to keep it in line. Already showing well now but might soften with a few more years in bottle.

2009 Bladnoch "Young" K&L Exclusive Heavily Peated Single Barrel #57 Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky 750ml

Super unique stuff! I looked at David after tasting this and said "is it weird that this almost shows Agricole Rum or even Gin like botanical notes!?" This has a fresh cut grass quality, even a slight herbal component. Really interesting and unique. I can see why the Davids are so excited about some of these young malts, they are something that everyone should check out!

2011 Te Mata "Awatea" Bordeaux Blend Hawkes Bay

An exceptional value for a serious and structured wine of really high quality. The second wine to the legendary Coleraine the Awatea is a classic Bordeaux blend that is made in a slightly more soft and generous style. Lovely rich dark red fruits, plum, currant, bitter-sweet chocolate, subtle barrel spice an a hint of cigar box. A very good partner for red meat. I think this wine really appeals to people that like a more classic style of old school Napa Cab.

2012 Oakridge Local Vineyard Series "Guerin Vineyard" Chardonnay Yarra Valley
Review Date: 2-2-2014

Beautifully focused Chardonnay with minerality in spades. Winemaker David Bicknell has a very distinctive style of crisp, linear Burgundian type Chardonnay. This wine is all about tension and focus with citrus notes, spices, hints of buttered toast and flint. The wine is a must try for fans of Chablis and less obviously oaky, buttery chardonnay. One of the brightest most zippy Chards we have.

2010 Crystallum "Paradisum" Rhone Blend Paardeberg

Forget Châteauneuf-du-Pape this wine is the most exciting Rhone blend I have had in a while and its from South Africa! Sourced from old dry famred bushvines the wine has a wonderfully exuberant nose of violets, spice, leather and ripe blackberry. On the palate the wine is super fine and silky. Ripe tannins and vibrant acidity keep it lively on the palate. Med-full bodied, not heavy, but concentrated and rich. I loved this with Duck Confit the other night but I think it would go with most roasted meats or casserole dishes.

2011 Botanica Chenin Blanc Western Cape
Review Date: 2-2-2014

Remarkable wine from remarkable vineyards. The source for this wine are some of the most rugged and remote vineyards in South Africa. 50+ yr old gnarled, dry farmed vines produce tiny yields of this intensely flavored juice. Winemaker Giny Povall simply lends a very gentle guiding hand crafting it into a wonderfully pure and transparent wine. Firm stone fruits and barley grains form the main flavor profile, the acidity freshens on the back end like squeeze of Kafir lime like zestiness. A crushed granite mineral element adds complexity to an immensely drinkable wine!

2012 Te Whare Ra (TWR) Riesling "D" Marlborough New Zealand
Review Date: 2-2-2014

TWR is known across NZ for their amazing aromatic wines. This is their "D" bottling meaning "Dry". The wines is so fresh and zesty. Fresh lime, citrus blossom, tangerine. The acidity is racy but not austere. They work very hard to work with the lees contact to give the wine a lovely texture and elegance on the palate. This for me is lovely dry Riesling without being too lean and harsh.

2012 Te Whare Ra (TWR) Chardonnay Marlborough New Zealand

Great chard from TWR. Lovely balance of richness and restraint. Very exotic aromatics of ripe stone fruits and some floral nuances. The wine was a tiny production in 2012 totaling just 100cs! The flavor concentration from the old Mendoza clone vines really shows and is perfectly framed by the spicy oak and savory lees components. A very complete Chardonnay.

2010 Te Mata "Bullnose" Syrah Hawkes Bay

A spectacularly exotic Syrah from Te Mata. This wine has endless silky dark fruit, Asian spice and a touch of bitter-sweet chocolate. There is just a hint of old school earthy quality here to stop the ripe qualities taking over. A real classic wine that truly deserves it's reputation as one of the most iconic bottles in NZ.

2010 Denbies Estate "Cubitt Reserve" Surrey, England
Review Date: 2-2-2014

A rich, creamy texture and lots of toasty richness. A round, soft mouth feel and fine bubbles with but with lots of underlying minerality and fresh acidity. This bottling shows why Denbies Estate is one of the big players in English sparkling wine. They have a great south facing chalky site that allows them to bring big, powerful Pinot Noir based wines to the table like few others in England can achieve. This is a crowd pleaser.

2008 Gusbourne Estate Brut Reserve, Kent, England

A savory wine with intense lees character from the extended ageing on the yeast. Toasty, nutty flavors dominate but the wine also has a bright core of crunchy pear and zesty citrus acidity. A wine showing a lovely element of development and elegance from its time in bottle. This is very hard to pick from great Champagne and has beaten many such Champagnes in blind tastings internationally (Bollinger for one on the BBC’s “12 Drinks of Christmas”) I can definitely see why!

2011 Wiston Estate "South Downs Brut Rosé" West Sussex England
Review Date: 2-2-2014

Another standout wine from Wiston Estate. This magnificent rose is all about purity and elegance. A fresh nose of rose petals and spice with hints of Strawberry carries through on to the wonderfully soft, fine textured palate with Alpine Strawberries and fresh cream on brioche. A perfect expression of Rose for me. Lovely focus and precision with a softness and elegance that is very hard to achieve. Top notch stuff. 8g/l dosage. If it matters to you, (and sometimes with “Champagne” it does) these guys also got the packaging right, a very stylish and eye catching bottle, enough to land them on the Forbes' list for coolest wine labels of 2013!

2010 Wiston Estate "South Downs Cuvée Brut" West Sussex, England

A standout in English Sparkling. These guys are very serious about making world-class sparkling wines. An incredible wine with powerful, chalky minerality and very focused, linear intensity. A low 4g/l dosage and high acidity means this is more in the Extra Brut camp for those that like very crisp dry Champagnes. The wine has rich flavor concentration that zips across the palate. I think this is quite reminiscent of Krug with its barrel-fermented qualities showing through adding another layer of textural quality and toasty flavors. A unique expression of English sparkling from perhaps the most focused producer that we came across. If it matters to you, (and sometimes with “Champagne” it does) these guys also got the packaging right, a very stylish and eye catching bottle, enough to land them on the Forbes list for coolest wine labels of 2013!
