2012 Banshee Sonoma County Pinot Noir
Review Date: 12-1-2013

Another really solid effort from Banshee. A juicy, richer style of Pinot Noir that still has good lift and balance. Dark cherry, vanilla, clove and baking spice. Soft and supple with good mid-palate weight and texture. Seriously crowd friendly Pinot for holiday parties etc. Very good value for Pinot of this quality in the $20ish price point. Easy to drink, easy to love!

2010 d'Arenberg "High Trellis" Cabernet Sauvignon McLaren Vale South Australia

Seriously good Cab for a tiny price! From very old vines in McLaren Vale, this wine has great power and concentration with lush dark fruits, blackcurrant, cassis, crushed mint, sweet tobacco and new leather. Med-full bodied with a nice grip to the tannin supporting the dense fruit. As with all of Chester's wines it has a lovely earthy component and vibrant acidity that sets it apart from pretty much all other challengers in this price point by adding an additional layer of complexity and intrigue. A stunning hearty red as we head into the depths of winter. A very crowd pleasing style of Cabernet at a pocket book pleasing price!

2012 Kloof Street (Mullineux Family Wines) Red Rhône Blend Swartland South Africa

A stunningly perfumed, elegant Rhone blend. Lots of crushed bramble fruits, Raspberry coulis and loganberry balanced with more savory toasted spice and gravelly minerality. This wine is made from fruit hand-picked form old, dry farmed, bush vines in Swartland on South Africa's west coast. Very minimal intervention winemaking from Chris and Andrea Mullineux skilfully preserved this wines natural vibrancy and sense of place.

2008 Rippon Riesling Lake Wanaka Central Otago New Zealand (Biodynamic)

Killer Riesling!! All the intense stony minerality and drive that you would expect from it's German counter parts but a purity to the fruit and texture that is unique to Rippon. These are 30+ year old vines planted on their roots in deep schist soils. A very special site and a wine maker that is obsessive about quality and balance. I have had this wine all the way back to 1991 and they hold up extremely well. This wine is just fractionally off dry and just starting to show some lovely bottle development.

1973 Berberana Reserva Rioja( top shoulder fill)
Review Date: 11-19-2013
When Joe opened these wines for us I was simply amazed at the life left in them. There is still vibrancy here, dusty red fruits with spice and soft wood tones. The palate is still long and intriguing with no sense of decay. Perfectly mature Rioja, and an exceptional buy for a wine of such grace and complexity.

2011 Domaine Champy Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "En Caradeux" Blanc

A much richer proposition than last year. Fleshier, toastier and more forward. Caramel Apple and pie crust. This would be a great crossover wine for more modern Chardonnay drinkers seeking a white Burgundy to sink their teeth in to. Still has good drive but much more "showy" than last years mineral driven and somewhat introverted En Caradeux.

The touch of sulfur this wine showed on arrival is now completely resolved. It has settled in to be quite an exceptional wine. The wine shows crushed pears and baked Apple Pie with lots of hard ground spices, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. The wine has fleshed out in texture also and has a nice approachable softness to it. Good acid structure means I'm sure this one will age, but it may just be too good now to wait any longer!

Wow! This is ton of wine for a very modest price. Highly aromatic with rose petal, lavender, and freshly crushed forest fruits. The texture of the wine on the palate is quite remarkable. So silky and elegant with super fine slippery tannin from the heavy clay soils in this vineyard. Exceptional poise and an almost ethereal quality on the finish. Excellent.

Nice purity, soft Raspberry fruit, sandalwood and spice. A mid-weight wine with plenty of flesh but also bright acidity. Well constructed and a great value under $20!

2007 Michel Arnould Vintage "Carte d'Or" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 10-15-2013

Seriously complex Champagne. Made up from parcels of Mesnil Chard and old vine Verzenay Pinot Noir. The wine has a lovely fragrant nose of Jasmine and Sweet-pea with warm bread aromas. On the palate I find a dramatically fine complex texture and breadth, richness without excessive weight. Flavors of crunchy pear and quince are balanced with softer riper yellow stone fruit and subtle shaved ginger. Immaculate balance and ethereal persistence.

Laurent-Perrier "Cuvée Rosé " Brut Rosé Champagne
Review Date: 10-15-2013
Bright, rich, ripe Rose Champagne with lovely fruit and excellent purity. It shows some subtle notes of crushed mint and strawberry coulis. The quality of the all Grand Cru Pinot Noir fruit sources really show through on this wine. The elegant pure red fruit flavors are balanced by a nice tart cranberry acidity on the finish.

A very rich Champagne with ripe golden orchard fruit on the nose with toasty brioche notes. The wine shows toasted barley and Graham Cracker with a creamy texture and supple round mouth feel. A powerful crowd pleasing Champagne to enjoy this holiday season.

2012 A.A. Badenhorst "Secateurs" Chenin Blanc Swartland

Lovely pure, balanced and immensely drinkable Chenin Blanc. This wine is such great value. It is entirely hand picked from 50+ year old bush vines in Swartland on South Africa's west coast. The fruit is gently pressed and fermented in a combination of tank and neutral french oak. The wine is driven by soft stone fruit flavors of ripe peach and yellow plum. Minerality coming from the deeply rooted old vines in decomposed granite soils adds another layer of intrigue. This wine is so supple and expressive, just a joy to drink.

Fantastic rich, nutty chard with excellent persistence on the pallet. Sourced from Meursault (Domonique Lafon) and very well crafted. This wine shows the richness and ripe fruit character of the tremendous 2009 vintage but retains plenty of acidity and structure. Drinks well above it's very modest price point. Great transition wine for people seeking to get into white Burgundy.
