2009 Marguet Père et Fils "Amboniacus" Brut Rosé Champagne
Review Date: 2-11-2015
Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image
I think Benoit Marguet's Champagnes are some of the most fascinating and complex wines we sell. There is just something about them that has limitless energy and drive. From the vintage wines, to NV, to Rose...they all have a theme of both richness and tension. Lovely toasty lees components but all have a very taught structure and firm acid line. I can't quite put my finger on what it is that makes these wines so special...perhaps that is part of the intrigue...if you're a Champagne enthusiast, do not miss this producer.

2013 Petit Clos (Henri Bourgeois) Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough

Fantastic Savvy! Grown on a close-planted, organically farmed estate in Marlborough's Southern Valley sub-region. Clos Henri is a project owned by master vigneron family Domaine Henri Bourgeois from Sancerre. The wine is a lovely combination of New Zealand's typically overt, bright fruit and Sancerre's more classic, restrained personality, with focus and minerality. We really liked this wine and took a serious position on it to bring you the best pricing around. This is a real bargain for lovers of dry, crisp, refreshing whites.

1990 Glenfarclas 24 Year Old K&L Exclusive Single Malt Whisky 750ml
Review Date: 12-17-2014
Stunning. Has some similarities to the "Faultline Casks" bottling but with more refined flavors and more developed, savory rancio characters. The texture is supple and elegant. Whilst this doesn't seem to have the chewy texture and raw "youthful" exuberance of the 9-10 year old bottling, it oozes subtle flavor intensity, focus, and purity. The sherry quality shows a little drier and more nutty rather than sweet and fruity. A beautiful bottle and crazy good for the age / money in today's climate!

Glenfarclas "The Faultline Casks" K&L Exclusive First Fill Oloroso Sherry Casks Single Malt Whisky 750ml
Review Date: 12-11-2014
This should come with some kind of warning..."Dangerously drinkable"..."Caution: contents will disappear quicker than intended"..."Drinking this bottle will impair your ability to judge other releases fairly". It's seriously that good. Rich, soft, full of flavor and texturally enticing and just an out-and-out "crowd pleaser." You can search high and low and you won't find a better holiday gift than this bottle. It has brand recognition, it's limited edition, it's cask strength(ish) at 57% alc...and it tastes great!

2010 Langmeil "Blacksmith" Cabernet Sauvignon Barossa Valley
Review Date: 12-2-2014
Great deal in Cabernet. Rich black fruit, touches of cedar, tobacco, dark earth and graphite. Med-full bodied with nice acidity to balance the dark fruit. This will keep a lot of people happy. This is not a simple fruit-driven wine by any means--there are some good tobacco notes and herbal edge complexity here. Great pricing on this bottle from a top-quality vintage.

2013 Savage "White" Western Cape

Very skillfully crafted wine. Containing elements of both subtle minerality and textural power / intensity. As good as this is now, I suspect it will age like great white Bordeaux. Very serious wine of depth and intensity.

2010 Ostler "Caroline's" Pinot Noir Waitaki Valley North Otago
Review Date: 11-14-2014

This is a highly fragrant wine. Purple flowers, a touch of lavender and anise on the nose. The palate is fresh and vibrant with lifted tones of fresh forest fruits, ground clove, star anise and some juicy raspberry as the mid-palate fleshes out with air. The wine is incredibly exotic and yet very focused and quite structured at the same time. It possesses a bright acidity and the unmistakable vibrancy that comes from deep limestone-rich soils. I can't wait to see how this wine ages; something tells me that it has a decade-plus ahead of it, and yet it is so expressive right now. This type of wine experience illustrates why people persist trying to make wine in very challenging places like the Waitaki Valley...because when things come together, vines on the edge of their existence produce the most exquisite and remarkable wines...just like this one!

This wine possesses a really good combination of generosity, richness and power combined with structure, acidity and potential longevity. Where so many have failed (in my opinion) to "amp up" Bordeaux styles, losing elegance and balance, this wine has beautifully achieved a synthesis of power and poise. The wine is just about accessible now (with very hearty food a good spell in a decanter) but I think will be a great prospect for another 10+ years in the cellar.

2012 Greywacke Pinot Noir Marlborough
Review Date: 10-23-2014

Rich and decadent wine for a pretty cool and challenging vintage. Strict low yields and careful viticulture of this single vineyard Pinot have ensured great quality and power. Dusty forest fruits, dark cherry, hard ground spices, lovely weight and density to the fruit but with elegance and purity. Some exotic French oak barrel notes and toast showing on the back end which is long and full of spice and earth. Kevin's long winemaking pedigree shows here with the new Greywacke project, allowing him to branch out into these smaller single vineyard projects.

2012 Elderton "Estate" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia
Review Date: 10-23-2014
Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image
Amazing precision and poise for such a powerful and concentrated wine. Over the years Barossa wines have suffered much criticism for becoming too big, too extracted, over-ripe and over oaked...none of this is true about this fine effort from Elderton. Despite its immense concentration and depth from 100+ year-old Shiraz vines, the limestone soils, deft use of strictly 600L puncheon barrels and restraint on ripeness levels and extraction means that this wine remains beautifully balanced and proportionate. Hallmark Barossa black fruit, scorched earth, leather and meaty nuances, lovely mid-palate acidity and fine delineated tannin on the long finish. A superb effort from a great South Australian vintage. A serious value at our special price for K&L customers.

Bright, juicy, soft, pure fruit. Amazing quality of fruit and balance for this price. Fleshy dark fruit, exotic spices, a touch of crushed mint and cassis from the dash of Cabernet in the blend. You won't believe how good this wine is for the money...don't just take my word for it...try a bottle...the wine speaks for itself!

Off the charts good for the money...I seriously think this is one of the best value Chards I have come across in my decade in the wine business. Lovely combination of rich orchard fruits, savory lees, flint, stony mineral tones and beautiful persistence and texture on the palate. Lovely ripeness but fresh acidity, bright drive and linear intensity. This is hard to beat even at $20.

Germain-Robin Small Blend No 3 Brandy 750ml
Review Date: 10-22-2014

Amazing. I don't feel particularly qualified to review this masterpiece of distillation and blending...but I will try. Just a phenomenal combination of aromatics, flavor, texture and perfectly weighted proof. I swear that if you think long and hard, you can pick out varietal characteristics of all the separate distillates that make up this work of art. Even the dramatically floral and intricate nose of the aromatic varietals that only make up tiny percentages of the final blend. A very complex Brandy, Germain Robin is the pinnacle of "craft" distillation in the U.S. for me.
