2010 Seghesio Barolo
Review Date: 7-8-2014
Wow what a great intro to Barolo at a steal of a price! Fresh accessible bramble fruits, spice, supple leather and fine tannins. Very much a mid-weight wine, pretty, floral and elegant but with plenty enough structure and grip to go with rich foods. This wine shows the brightness and quality of the 2010 Barolo vintage without breaking the bank or requiring you to wait half a lifetime to drink it!

2012 Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc "Oncle Vincent"
Review Date: 6-20-2014
Thanks to Burgundy buyer Keith for getting hold of some of this rare bottling. A rich and toasty wine with nice oak integration and ample weight on the palate. There is enough elegance and detail to pin this wine to its Puligny origins, however it has been "amped up" a touch to appeal to a broader range of Chardonnay drinkers. I think there is a lot to like in this wine and it offers plenty of layers for its very modest price point.

2010 Henry's Drive "Pillar Box Reserve" Cabernet Sauvignon Padthaway

Really exceptional Cabernet at this price. Lashings of dark blue and black fruits, a lovely cedar spice and a touch of pipe tobacco. The ripe tannins are fine and silky giving good texture whilst remaining supple and juicy on the palate. This is a great wine for grilled meats but equally drinkable when you just want a big glass of full-bodied Cab. Drink up!

2011 Domaine Delarche Pernand Vergelesses Rouge

A bargain in Burgundy! Pure, focused, expressive and eminently drinkable. Red fruited with quite crunchy acidity. The fine, silky textured tannin adds a nice softness to balance the notable acidity. All the edges are polished nicely by some time in French oak. A very complete wine for a seriously competitive price.

2012 Domaine Paul Pernot Puligny-Montrachet

Another great bottle from Pernot. A really fragrant wine with lots of orchard blossom and baked Pears. Quite focused and linear on the palate but without being to strict or abrasively acidic. Full of those distinctive Puligny soil tones and more delicate than its Chassagne sibling. Excellent persistence on the palate.

2012 Domaine Thomas Morey Saint Aubin

A lovely bottle of wine showing that quality that this underrated village can offer. The wine is almost ethereal on the palate. So supple and elegant, showing ripe orchard fruit bordering on fleshy stone fruits. There is a gently savory lees element and suggestion of mineral. Sure the wine has lovely flavor concentration but for me it is the silky texture on the palate that sets this wine apart from many of its competitors in this price point.

2011 Domaine Delarche Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "Les Vergelesses" Rouge

A fantastic bottle of wine from this young winemaker. I have loved these Delarche wines for the last few years and this is no exception. Highly perfumed nose of dark rose petals, Raspberry liqueur and exotic Asian spice. On the palate is has more density / flesh and a darker edge to the fruit than the (also quite delicious)village bottling. It has fine silky tannin and ample acidity to aid structure. Expressive now but also sure to give lots of enjoyment over the next 6-10 years.

2012 Oldenburg Vineyards Chardonnay Stellenbosch
Review Date: 6-2-2014
A powerful, rich, full bodied Chardonnay from Oldenburg, an exciting new producer that we have just started working with direct. I love that this wine has the creamy texture and plenty toasty oak that people love in some of California's greatest Chardonnays. However it also has lovely acidity, purity and drive on the palate that balances all the up-front richness. This wine will make a lot of people happy and the price is an absolute steal thanks to our direct import.

2012 Alfaro "A" Estate Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
Review Date: 5-29-2014
I have long been a fan of Alfaro since living in Santa Cruz for my first few years in CA. They have a great vineyard in the Corralitos Hills, an area that produces very distinctive, elegant Pinot Noirs. There is often a softness and plush texture to the wines of this region even when they are not big or over-ripe. It is the combination of both restraint and softness that I love about this wine. It is elegant and yet the fruit is not crunchy or lean. It has a remarkable concentration and richness but remains almost ethereal on the palate. Superb Pinot that is true to its origin and delivers a huge amount of pleasure for a very modest price.

2010 Proprietŗ Sperino "Uvaggio" Costa della Sesia

Just an enchanting wine. Fresh, bright floral aromatics with plenty of crushed dark fruits, ground spice and Agar wood. The wine has power, tension, focus and poise. There is a wonderful interplay of dark and light; deep rich fruit and earth contrasted by floral aspects and high toned perfume. There is plenty of structure here but the tannins are fine and not austere in anyway. This can be enjoyed now with some decanting or put away for a decade. Really special wine.

2012 Torbreck "Woodcutter's" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia
Review Date: 4-29-2014

Full throttle, rich opulent Shiraz. Brimming with soft, ripe dark fruit, raspberry liqueur, melted chocolate and toasted spice. Full bodied, soft and supple with formidable concentration and density but not overtly sweet. For me this offers a lot of the same characteristics of Torbreck's much more expensive wines at an everyday price.

2012 Back Nine Cellars Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 4-25-2014
Dark fruit, blackcurrant, cassis and touch of mocha and spice with just enough "Rutherford Dust" and grip to keep it from showing overly ripe. There is a freshness to this wine that I like, it has more drive than some Napa Valley floor wines I have encountered. At this price it's a pretty serious value considering its origin and the reputation of the property that produced it. This delivers a lot of authentic Rutherford flavors at a pretty modest price point.

2012 Back Nine Cellars Napa Valley Chardonnay
Review Date: 4-25-2014
Simply put, you could pay a lot more to get a wine of this quality and style! Definitely one for the lovers of bigger, richer more barrel influenced Chardonnay but for what is eschews in subtlety it more than makes up for with lashings of ripe fruit, toasty oak and a round creamy texture. A powerful wine that is certain to keep a lot of people happy without costing a fortune like some of its brand name kin.

2012 Penfolds "Bin 138" Old Vine Grenache-Shiraz-Mataro Barossa Valley
Review Date: 4-21-2014

This wine is just brimming full of briary bramble fruit, exotic spices, some meaty gamey notes and a sweet, supple, juicy element that is hard to capture in words. The wine has a fine balance of purity and density, the extract is perfect giving ample body and richness but never feeling heavy or losing freshness and drive. Bin 138 really shows why this blend has endured across the ages as it pulls elements from each of its individual components. Grenache provides the bright spicy fruit, Shiraz a darker edge, structure and meaty element the Mataro (Mourvedre) adding its unmistakable earthy undertones and savory dimension. A really great wine equally enjoyable for lovers of Aussie GSMs and Châteauneuf-du-Papes alike!

Rich, ripe and juicy. A fleshy, powerful wine with lots of ripe stone fruit and freshly squeezed citrus. The wine also gets some maturation in barrel and has great mid-palate texture and has a faint nutty, toasty persistence on the finish that really adds another level of complexity. Really tasty Savvy at a steal of a price.
