Lehmann "Jamesse Prestige" Grand Champagne mouth blown wine glass
Review Date: 5-20-2014
Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image Reviewer image
When our Champagne gurus Gary and Scott came back from Champagne this year raving about the glassware designed by Philippe Jamesse, I certainly took notice. These Champagne glasses are a bit more open and less flute like than standard flutes, and highlight the complexity of Champagne beautifully. Among the best Champagne glasses we've ever used, they are also an incredible value for both the mouth blown and machine made versions. If you love Champagne you owe it to yourself to try this glass.

2012 Grey's Peak (Greystone) Pinot Noir Waipara

This was my favorite (and not the most expensive) Pinot Noir from our recent New Zealand staff tasting. Delightfully rich and complex with a very enticing mineral quality from limestone. It has a fine red fruit richness enveloping a solid structure while maintaining a perfect varietal correctness. It offers up lovely spicy and earthy notes deftly layered to present its characteristics both on the nose and palate over time. It's not always easy to be rich AND complex in New World Pinot Noir, and rarely at this price. It's a super big deal wine in New Zealand, (known as Greystone there, but Grey's Peak here due to copyrights) and it's just a matter of time before more wine drinkers catch on here.

2012 Penfolds "Bin 128" Shiraz Coonawarra South Australia

The Bin 128 is a serious and solid Syrah despite its fairly reasonable place in the Penfolds price lineup. The French oak is deftly layered into wonderfully solid warm Syrah fruit tinged with black spices and touches of leather and mild tobacco leaf. Bright red fruit highlights show themselves nicely at the long lingering finish. Bravo!

2012 Penfolds "Bin 8" Cabernet Sauvignon-Shiraz South Australia
Review Date: 4-8-2014

I love the addition of Syrah to Cabernet, and Penfolds is certainly one of the masters of the blend. Rich dense black fruits but not at all overblown, and oak that is present but very nicely integrated. It's smooth and rich with a nice long finish. With all the high priced Penfolds offerings lately, here's a fantastic offering showing their style at a price we can afford.

2011 La Massa "La Massa" Toscana
Review Date: 10-23-2013

Wow! What a deal in a rich modern Super Tuscan. This is a super unctuous, wonderfully deep fruited Sangiovese based beauty with a lovely modern character. It's the Caymus Special Select of Tuscan Sangiovese blends! Nicely layered and smooth on the palate with blackberry, blueberry and black plum fruits with a little touch of smoke and savory to tell you its origin. It drinks too well right now to convince anyone to save much, but will be fine with a few years too. Big points, little price, delicious wine - you can't go wrong.

2005 Launois "Spécial Club" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne (ships as 1.5L)

The Launois 'Special Club' has regularly been a giant hit with our staff and customers alike and the 2005 is right in line. A bit richer than the 2004, it's really showing its old vine source (50+ year old vines)Fantastic creamy richness even right from the start and a long vanilla and nut cream component on the palate. Lots of brioche and a wonderful expression of its 100% Mesnil Chard. You can't go wrong with this one!

2002 Thienot "La Vigne aux Gamins" Blanc de Blancs Brut Champagne
Review Date: 8-13-2013

Stunning perfection. The 2002 La Vigne Aux Gamins elegance and purity rise this Champagne to a level rarely seen. Without the need for blousy opulence or extensive lees character, the Champagne sings. It's a counter tenor compared to the more commonly seen baritone version of great Champagnes. No offence to the rich and toasty champagnes out there, I love those sometimes, but this is cerebral and special, a bright and vivid expression of Champagne, showing extremely refined minerality, delicate white florals and wonderfully focused fruit that is both delicate and profound at the same time. Don't miss this one!

Launois "Quartz" Blanc de Blancs Brut Champagne

This lower pressure Champagne, coming from the single vineyard Chetillons is another astounding deal from Launois. The soft creamy feel of the mousse and the long lingering palate feel showing sweetcake and creamy apple richness mid-palate flows to a long lingering finish (another Grand Cru at this price!) ..... what's not to like?

I couldn't go home without a bottle after tasting this spectacular Champagne. Opulent but with spectacular verve, fine focus and a rich creamy middle, Ripe pears, delicate spices and orange blossoms linger on the nose and through the palate. All the characteristics of Mesnil from amazingly old vines and half the price of the most famous Mesnil Champagnes - and a very strong competitor to them.

Light and crisp on the nose and moving on to an absolutely wonderful zesty palate of citrusy/tangerine like fruit - it has a wonderful mousse and a great finish. Drink like a movie star! This was the Champagne for the 2013 Oscars.

1995 Charles Heidsieck "Blanc des Millénaires" Brut Champagne

Exactly what I want in special occasion Champagne - rich hazelnut cream, spicy baked apple, notes of honey and a wonderfully toasty overlay, yet it has great acidity and is still fresh - a wonderful balancing act. Perfect bubbles and silky palate texture, this is perfection in a bottle. Heidsieck has spent a huge amount of effort on quality across the range of their Champagnes, and this is absolutely spectacular!
