2012 Au Bon Climat/K&L Wine Merchants "Bien Nacido Vineyard" Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir

Great vintage... classic Central Coast, single (GREAT) vineyard fruit source, and a wonderful Pinot. Incredible balance, lush perfumed aromas of strawberries and rose petals, with wet river stone mineral tones. Excellent complexity, deeply flavored, integrated and focused, and a long, warm finish. This Gem is a barrel-selection by our very own Bryan Brick from the Bien Nacido Vineyards at Au Bon Climat and should rival Pinots that are three times the price. Buy it!!! Or else!!! My dog Rusty has demanded that I bring home at least three cases of this great Gem (like we need more wine in the house)... Well, okay.

If any one minor growth achieve an incredible success in this vintage, it is La Tour De By. Medium-deep ruby in color, this wine offers wonderful aromas of cassis, currents, and vanilla. In the mouth, you are treated to an amazingly complex wine with wonderful structure and depth of flavor, excellent complexity, and a finish that refuses to give up. Rusty has informed me that this Gem will be one of our house red for the next 3 to 6 years. 13.5% ABV

Lush and delicious, with a bright and dry presentation, this highly aromatic, wonderful offering is clean and crisp in the mouth, and offers a nice everyday drinking sparkler at a “cheap” price. This is the first time that Greg St.Clair has had this exceptional sparkler imported to us from Blason. Eby has informed me that this Gem will be one of our house sparkling wines for the month. Enjoy! 12.0% ABV

I get a kick out of how most of my colleagues and many wine writers talk about how extreme (cold to hot to very hot) the “historic” weather conditions during the summer of 2003 were in Bordeaux (and Europe). Look at where many of the alcohol levels of the wines of 2009 are, particularly the Right Bank (14.5% to 15+% ABV), and we need to ask ourselves, “What are they talking about?” This 2003 Gem is sitting at 13% ABV and provides lush, viscous, complex, silky fruit on the palate, lovely aromatics of currants and cassis, with an almost earthy undertone, an excellent core of well-integrated fruit, and a finish that is long, warm and satisfying. Rusty has informed me that this Gem will be one of our house reds for the month.

2005 Miguel Merino Reserva Rioja

What an amazingly wonderful wine that is a cross between old school Rioja and new worldish richness. Medium deep ruby in color (it’s still has that youthful appearance), the rich, lush bouquet offers tons of fruit with a vibrant anise to blackberry fruit tinge and a Burgundian game-like background note. Broad, viscous, silky, deeply flavored, and complex in the mouth, this Gem offers immediate drinkability, yet incredible structure and depth to allow it to be cellared another five to ten years. Rusty has informed me that this Gem will be one of our house reds for the next five to then years. 14.0% ABV

2010 Qupé "Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard - K&L Selection" Edna Valley Syrah

This lovely Gem was a special bottling produced for us by owner/winemaker Robert Lindquist at Qupé from a vineyard that he planted in 2005. Medium-deep ruby in color, the incredibly opulent bouquet of spicy white pepper to dried red rose petals fruit is supported by a lush, almost creamy back note presentation. My immediate impression in the mouth is that this truly wonderful wine is perfectly balanced, integrated and broad, with a substantial, flashy, complex varietal fruit offering, subtle notes of vanillan oak, integrated silky tannins, viscous mouthfeel, layers of flavor, excellent depth and structure, and a finish that is warm, bright, and long. Rusty has informed that this superb Gem will be one of our house reds for however long it is around. What’s our retail price on this puppy…. No, no, no, that can’t be correct, but it is! Think Crozes-Hermitage when you try this Gem. 13.5% ABV

2012 Kalinda Rheingau Riesling Qba

Lush aromas of jasmine to white peach underscored by a wet river stone to slate-like minerality define the very serious bouquet of this lovely wine that was created by our German Wine Buyer, Eric Story [his third such creation in three years}, and is not quite a Tröcken nor a Halb-Tröcken, but somewhere in between those styles. Incredible structure and depth of character on the palate, this Gem is off-dry, yet refreshing and bright due to its excellent acid levels and presentation of superb Riesling fruit. According to Rusty, this very serious Gem is one of the best buys in the store and he has informed me that we need at least several cases of this wonderful wine. 11.5% ABV

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%) and Cabernet Franc (10%), this nicely aged, matured Cru Bourgeois Bordaeaux came directly to us from the library cellar of the chateau. In its opulent, distinctive bouquet, you will be treated to blackberry, mocha, cedary to antiqueish components, which carry over well into its complex, lush, silky mouthfeel. Sophisticated, elegant and well-integrated, this Gem finishes with a long, warm, and intricate finish. Rusty has informed me that this Gem will definitely be one of our house reds for the month. 13.0% ABV

Medium-deep ruby in color, the bouquet offers up tons of black cherry to currants-like fruit notes with mocha to roasted coffee bean undertones, and a hint of slate-like minerality. All of this carries over nicely to a complex, broad, viscous wine in the mouth. Rusty has informed me that this will be one of our every day house wine in five to ten years For those of you who are hung up on points from the wine gods, The Wine Spectator gave this 89 points, Parker gave it 90 points, and Suckling gave it 92 points. 14.0% ABV

Medium deep ruby in color, the nose shows lush plumy to blueberry notes with just a hint of wet stone minerality. With its soft, round, integrated entry, this Gem, which is mostly Merlot, offers up immediate drinkability and completeness, with a long, warm finish. Produced from Chardonnay [obviously, since it is “Blanc de Blancs”], this amazing Gem throws tons of yeasty, nutty, creamy fruit at you both in the nose and on the palate, with brilliant complexity, and a lush, broad, and rich finish. The Bean has ordered me to bring at least one case of this home for our consumption in the next one to three-plus years. I will probably bring home more than that. 12.0% ABV

In a so-so vintage, Lanessan has created a wonderfully balanced wine that is soft and round in the mouth with blackberry to currant-like fruit, with portabella and earthy notes, and a clean, warm finish. This Gem will be one of our house reds for the month, according to Rusty. 13.0%

2003 Lanessan, Haut-Médoc
Review Date: 2-21-2013

The 2003 vintage was an incredibly warm vintage that resulted in certain grapes becoming a bit too ripe and, as a result, producing rather fat style wines. This Lanessan is not that, and if one discription has to be used, it is power. Deeply colored, this Gem shows a ripe, rich, focused cassis to current fruit note with mocha undertones on the nose, that leads to a broad, viscous, complex, almost creamy mouthfeel. It is long and luscious, and will be our house red, according to Rusty for the next three to six years. 13.0% ABV

Between this vintage and the 1997, I can’t make up my mind as to which one I absolutely like the best. The problem, here, is that I love this Bordeaux vintage. It is a classic great vintage to me. But the 1997 is so superb to drink now, it is hard for me to decide. Read my description of the 1997 and apply it to this Gem. Rusty has indicated that this production will be one of our house reds for however long it is around. 13.0% ABV
