2006 Viņa Falernia Syrah Reserva Elqui Valley
(out of stock)
Review Date: 8-17-2010
An intriguing offering and a good value, but not a wine that one would want to drink every week. This is a brute with intense flavors of tar, leather, and licorice. It made me sit up and take notice, but it's a bit overwhelming.

2007 Excelsior Cabernet Sauvignon Robertson
(out of stock)
Review Date: 8-17-2010
Upon opening the bottle, the dominant flavors were shoe leather and tar, not at all what I expected from a Cabernet. It was difficult to believe that it's just 8% syrah -- I would have guessed 80%. By the next day the unpleasant tarry notes had dissipated and the black currant fruit was dominant. This is a wine that cries out to be decanted or allowed to breathe for several hours.

2006 Clos du Gravillas "Le Rendez-Vous du Soleil" Vin de Pays Cotes de Brian
(out of stock)

And now for something completely different: this carignan blend shows sweet fruit but also the characteristic notes of caraway seed/celery seed that I find off-putting.

2009 Domaine Dupeuble Beaujolais
(out of stock)
Review Date: 8-11-2010
The 2009 Domaine Dupeublen is an average Beaujolais: fruity, thin and tart, like biting into a crisp Macintosh apple. This is a wine for when you just want to wash down your food. It seems the 2009 vintage is nothing to get excited about as far as Beaujolais is concerned.

2007 Anaba Sonoma Pinot Noir
(out of stock)
Review Date: 8-9-2010
It's bizarre to read such three different reviews of the same wine. Of the three, the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine hit the nail on the head: "Clean, well-defined, cherry-like fruit is the singular message of this modestly filled, medium-full-bodied wine." As for Wine Spectator, I don't know what they were smoking, as I don't detect herb, olive, or cranberry.
This is a tasty, well-balanced pinot with nice cherry fruit and none of the unpleasant off-notes that are found in most California pinots under $15. For a California pinot, it shows admirable restraint. At the clearance price of $9.99 it was an absolute steal. If K&L gets this back in stock, I will buy several bottles.

2007 Ferreira "Preston Estate " Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

A pleasant pinot with black cherries and baking spice. Not much complexity, but at $17 it's a reasonable value for a Russian River pinot.

2004 Fromm "La Strada" Reserve Syrah Marlborough New Zealand
(out of stock)
Review Date: 8-4-2010
A soft, well-balanced and easy-to-drink syrah, with black fruit, a touch of pepper, and a note of licorice that seemed more noticeable the second day. It's a pleasant wine and a reasonable value, but maybe a bit too soft and gentle. This is a wine to drink now.

2009 Montebuena Rioja

A very average Rioja -- pleasant enough for an every day wine, but not a 90 point wine by any stretch.

2008 Purisima Canyon Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
(out of stock)
Review Date: 8-2-2010
A simple wine with some sweetness, stewed fruit, and cinnamon. Not a lot of balance or complexity. it's inoffensive but not really a bargain at $14.

2008 Sean Minor "Four Bears" Carneros Pinot Noir
(out of stock)
Review Date: 8-1-2010
Not bad, not great. About what I would expect from a California pinot noir in this price range. There's not that much in the way of cherries or plums, and less bacon or spices. A couple steps up from Redtree, but not an outstanding value compared to what one can find from Argentina, Chile, or New Zealand in this price range.

2007 Henry's Drive Pillar Box Shiraz-Cabernet-Merlot Padthaway South Australia

2001 Fromm "La Strada" Pinot Noir Marlborough New Zealand
(out of stock)
Review Date: 7-30-2010
I'll remember this wine as one that got away. I didn't know what to expect from a 9-year-old pinot from New Zealand, so I bought just one bottle to try out. Big surprise -- it was elegant, well-balanced, and full-bodied, not tired at all, and a terrific value at the price. I immediately went to back to the website for more, but it was gone. I stocked up instead on the 2003 vintage of the same wine, but that one is not holding up as well as the 2001 did. From now on I'll keep an eye out for Fromm.

2007 Praxis Monterey County Pinot Noir
(out of stock)
Review Date: 7-22-2010
An average pinot for this price range: not a particularly bad wine, but certainly not a good one. There's a bit of cherry but also that unpleasant taste of overripe strawberry that is characteristic of low end California pinot.

2007 Boarding Pass (R Wines) Shiraz South Australia
(out of stock)
Review Date: 7-16-2010
Much better than any other Australian shiraz in this price range. A fruity, intense, chewy wine that rounds out nicely after a few hours of air. Would probably benefit from decanting.

2007 Laboure Roi Bourgogne Blanc "Maximum"
(out of stock)
Review Date: 7-16-2010
Pronounced notes of paint thinner and cork. This is a wine that makes one ask, "What did we do to France to deserve this?" Because the 2007 Laboure Roi Bourgogne Blanc is a hostile wine.
