2008 Aveleda Alvarinho Vinho Verde
(out of stock)
Review Date: 7-11-2010
I'm a fan of vinho verde, but this one tasted a bit watery and flat to me. There is grapefruit and a pleasant note of grassiness, but I didn't get the stern minerality. It did come to life with some time in the glass, so this wine seems to improve with air.
Price: $9.99
2007 The Black Chook "VMR" Viognier-Marsanne-Rousanne South Australia
(out of stock)
Review Date: 7-6-2010
A bit astringent, with notes of turpentine. It's not a terrible wine; it's just not enjoyable.
Price: $8.99
2008 Redtree Pinot Noir
(out of stock)
Review Date: 6-27-2010
A California pinot for $6.99 is a little like a dog walking on its hind legs. It's enough that he can do it at all, and one shouldn't expect him to be good at it. The 2008 Redtree Pinot Noir is drinkable, but that's all I can say in its favor.
Price: $6.99
2007 Claiborne & Churchill Edna Valley Pinot Noir
(out of stock)
Review Date: 6-2-2010
A full, fruity California Pinot with loads of black cherry and some spice. Not much complexity, but very tasty and one of the better values in this price range.

2007 Red Car "Boxcar" Sonoma Coast Syrah
(out of stock)
Review Date: 5-27-2010
I don't quite know what to expect from California syrahs -- some are peppery, some are tart, and some even taste like bacon or beef fat. The Red Car Boxcar 2007 Sonoma Syrah instead bursts forth with loads of blackcurrant and blackberry. At the same time the finish has a bit of earth that reminds me of a really nice Bordeaux. I don't think it needs to breathe at all; it was delicious from the first sip.

2007 Copain "Tous Ensemble" Anderson Valley Pinot Noir
(out of stock)
Review Date: 5-24-2010
This is a real disappointment for a 2007 Pinot from California -- more like a $12-15 pinot than a $25 one. I bought several bottles, and I have to practically force myself to drink them. It does have plenty of lemony acidity and some tannin, but not much fruit, body, or complexity. Copain is famous for their single vineyard wines, but they seem to be counting on that reputation with this blend, which is average at best.
Price: $24.99
2008 Bodegas Atamisque Catalpa Pinot Noir Single Vineyard Mendoza
(out of stock)
Review Date: 4-20-2010
A very nice wine for the money -- lots of cherry, intense garnet color, and some weight that reminds me a bit of Cabernet. It's a better value than any California or Oregon-grown Pinot I've tasted in this price range.

2008 Gemtree "Tadpole" Shiraz McLaren Vale South Australia
(out of stock)
Review Date: 4-5-2010
Australian shiraz can be very good, but most of it is disappointing. I was hoping the 2008 Gemtree Tadpole McLaren Vale shiraz would prove to be the happy exception, but it has powerful notes of vanilla and not much else. If I wanted wine that tastes like vanilla cola, I would have bought Yellow Tail and saved some money.

2008 Cep (Peay Vineyards) Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
(out of stock)
Review Date: 4-5-2010
The 2008 Cep is a classic north coast pinot noir with loads of bing cherry and tea leaves on the lingering finish. It's very nice now and has enough complexity that it could get better with some age. A good value for the price.

2008 Erath Oregon Pinot Noir
(out of stock)
Review Date: 4-3-2010
The 2008 Erath Pinot is thin and tart without much fruit.
Price: $17.99
2008 Steele Shooting Star "Blue Franc" Washington Blaufrankisch
(out of stock)
Review Date: 4-2-2010
Drinkable but not enjoyable. It's easy to see why no one else is growing this grape -- this was one of those bottles that was a chore to finish. There are so many better values in red wine from California, Oregon, and Washington.
Price: $13.99
2007 Cave de Saumur Selection Rouge
(out of stock)
Review Date: 1-27-2010
Metallic and mildly unpleasant. Drinkable, but barely. There are much better values in the Cotes du Rhone aisle.
Price: $7.99
2008 Cielo Pinot Noir
(out of stock)
Review Date: 1-10-2010
A truly unpleasant wine, barely fit for cooking. Give this one a miss.
