Got kicked out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2005 for amassing too many credits. Nowadays, I study red wine without running the risk of taking too many courses

The aromas are quite secondary, with a precise, distinctive nose of leather and pencil lead. An earthy mushroom sauce can bring out elegant front palate fruits, say black currant typical of Saint Julien. A bit more concentrated than, but lacks some of the finish present in the 1994.

Tasted twice, at Pichon Baron and locally within the last six weeks, with the bottle in Bordeaux slightly fresher. Both bottles were topped off in 2006. Lovely balance between floral apricot nose and the bitter almond and caramel that dominates the palate. Still fine and well integrated. It will remain in this delicate balance for at least another five years.

Note to editor (and please remove this before posting): Both bottles were a hue darker than the picture shown here. For instance, http://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?pid=33593628&id=703386&ref=fbx_album

The nose reveals a clean bouquet of mushrooms, herbs and forest floor. The earthy palate is well balanced by a focused black currant note. There is enough structure left to last several more years, though the wine is drinking beautifully right now.

2006 Rust en Vrede Estate Red Blend Stellenbosch (out of stock)

2006 produced extremely ripe wines from South Africa, and this is no exception. Currently, the wine approaches the front palate with a spice, raspberry and dried fruit flavour. The wine will likely age gracefully for ten years, but the winemaker Coenie Snyman mentioned that he appreciates the fruit now.

Had this wine twice, at a bridge party and at the Spectator grand tour. At the bridge party, the meaty nose and supple palette complimented the pizza with salami, prosciutto, etc. Also, the complex fruit (blueberry, blackberry, black cherry) and lingering finish made it a pleasant sipping wine for the evening. A direct comparison with the Torbreck Shiraz Barossa Valley 2006, where the yields were reduced to 30 hectolitres per hectare, revealed structure and concentration that lends itself to bottle aging. The winemaker suggests looking forward to the 2007 for those who enjoy powerful shiraz from a drought year.
